Show me one Canadian Junior on the rise who didn't get humiliated in the first round. They should have to prove themselves much, much more before being allowed to publicly humilate themselves and their country like this. Contrast this to the US Open- Where, with 10 times the popluation of Canada, there are in fact "juniors on the rise" whose playing strength is sometimes hundreds of points higher than their current USCF rating. Example-- <Robson> and <Hess> two years ago. Canada has no <Robson> or <Hess>. Pumping up the prize pool to line <Irina Krush's> pockets at the expense of some CANADIAN SCHMUCK with NO SHAME is not helping Canadian Chess. Some of these fools aren't even rated as high as I am- Which is ridiculous. Think about that for a second. It's an international laughing stock.
"Play within your means".
And "Organize tournaments within your means".
If you can't raise the prize money to attract an <Adams> or a <Krush> to your tournament, PUBLICLY EMBARRASSING YOUR WHOLE COUNTRY by allowing PUNK ASS PATZERS to pad the prize fund with their IMPERTINENT HUBRIS just makes the WHOLE COUNTRY A LAUGHING STOCK. Again- Canada is not the United States.
Do you see the difference? Your points are wholly valid with respect to a tournament like the <US Open>. But not the <Canadian Open>. It is humiliating- to a Canadian chess player and a Canadian chess fan- pure and simple. CASE CLOSED |

| Jul-17-09 | | hms123: <jess> Fair enough. I always assume that Canada is like the US but with diferent brands of petrol. We have Exxon and I believe that you have the more traditional Esso. I still remember how disappointed I was the first time that I crossed from Detroit to Windsor. I thought Canada was a foreign country. Fooled me. Canada is geographically large so there should be lots of people playing chess--except that that aren't lots of people are there? Therein lies the problem. It would be simple to promote chess in Canada. Just carve out a very large chessboard in the ice. You could use baby seals for pawns and grizzlies etc. for the other pieces. It could work. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Howard> well you're certainly in tune with Canadian culture. They *do* in fact feature "human ice chess" at the popular <Cut Down All the Trees and use them to Beat the Whales to Death With> Winter Carnival. However, it's in the middle of summer.
I can recommend a good time/date/weather site, but it will only tell you about South Korean conditions. Would that be of any help?
It's hotter than a monkey's sweaty bum here at the moment and it's 4 in the freaking morning. Current Humidity is at 200%. |

 | | chancho: Hey, <Jess>. I thought for a while there that I may have said something that offended you... given I asked you a question and you never answered.
But perhaps the stress of your job among other things is the reason.
Anyway, I hope you are ok. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: It's no worries, my dear <Canyonero>. I can't even imagine circumstances under which I would even become "slightly miffed" with you. It's never happened yet- and I don't see how it could happen in the future. I've just been super busy and I have a lot of mail here that's unanswered at the moment. Your pal Jess |

| Jul-19-09 | | sentriclecub: 안녕하세요,
Hi Jess!
I wanted to comment on your BOBBY FISCHER-related <FILMS>: The "Anything to win" documentary is so insightful about his determination. It's my opinion that Bobby Fischer's chess ability stemmed in part from his attitude toward chess, and the super-seriousness of chess to him. I'm actually a fan of his attitude towards the game, especially his heralded quote <Chess is life>. I love watching the documentary because I see in him that he removed fake barriers between himself and his passion. Is this too artsy-fartsy? Or are you also fascinated by his self-directed obsession? I'm so terrible at the game of chess, that I'll never be able to appreciate his chess ability. I am a very hard worker, and I am fascinated by his eccentric attitude and how he quit because that's what he wanted. I love that about him! I too have an on/off obsessive switch that helps me do my best when I give something my 100% effort. :^^ I hope that my reason to like RJF has some merit, since I can't truly appreciate his chess ability. I thought I would drop by and ask the expert. :p |
