That quote is probably deeply offensive to anyone who has ever had to rely on their knowledge of Bushcraft to save their life for real, especially since I made it up waiting for my microwave chips to ping.

I'm glad you liked it tho <Jess> :-)

Don't underestimate <Ray Mears>-

After accidentally locking himself in his own bathroom, he once survived for six days on nothing but <tile grouting>.

Here is a picture of some grouting, in case any of you ever have to face this harrowing experience:

http://www.howtotileashowerandbathr...

Heh- "Bush" craft-

Another OUTRAGEOUS post breaking multiple posting guidelines <Deffi>- I should think <Ray> would be proud of you.

Sep-13-09  WBP: <A Karpov Fan> (Sorry this is late getting back to you)--Terrific idea, to post Kasparov's annotations. I am really getting onto this--the '60s were a kind of Golden Age of Chess for me (emphasis on the "for me" part). Back then, the Sunday puzzles consisted of Fool's Mate and stuff like that, and a victory in your local club championship could get you into the Interzonals.

Ah yes, the good old days!

<Jess> Regarding your very interesting observation regarding Sunday puzzle solvers--<If one "solves" a chess puzzle by moving pieces around on a board- that is a useful thing to do, don't get me wrong- but it has little or no power to increase your actual OTB rating. And the vast majority of our puzzle solvers, redoubtable crew that they are, use a board and pieces to "solve" the puzzles.

That's because in an OTB game you can't mess around with the pieces> I'm sure you're aware that Spassky was once playing in a Candidates Match--can't remember his opponent--and at one point, instead of studying the actual pieces on the gameboard when it was his move, he began to study the huge display board showing the position for the audience. And if memory serves me correctly, at that point, he actually began to win the match. (There are no doubt more reliable memories frequenting these parts who can set the record straight on this one.)

yikes those grubs are big, I love the way he just eats it raw. Chewy on the outside with a soft center -lol-

The <liquid honey ants> are bizarre tho, straight out of an Aliens movie or what? And he bites off their fat abdomen! Poor little fellas.

I know some people live that way, and nature is as tough as it is beautiful, but how would we react if a load of giants came over and picked up all the fat people by their heads and chewed off their bellies?

would be quite funny to watch tho

Instead of digging down deep into a nest, they would just have to pry open the roof of the nearest McDonald's -lol-

Question-

Ok here you have just played

30.Bf4

click for larger view

Were you already planning the <e5> push at this point? Did you see that it might be a problem for him to defend against a Pawn <e4-e5> push in terms of his whole position collapsing on the Queenside?

Because look here a few moves later-

33.e5!

click for larger view

and now

33...Bxe5?

click for larger view

This is far from obvious to me, but after you snap off his Bishop with your Knight here, your Knight is actually immune- because to recapture leads to the collapse of Black's position- so he has to give up material instead-

34.Nxe5!

click for larger view

Now, if

34...dxe5,

White would have

35.Bxe5!

click for larger view

And look how fast Black collapses on the Queenside- his c-pawn is going to fall, there's a truly VICIOUS pin on his knight-

If he tries to unpin his knight by moving the rook off the <b8-h2> diagonal and guarding his Knightwithout then after <Rxc5> the Knight must move but there's no square for it except the <e1> square, and Black is suddenly passive and trussed like a turkey while your <a-pawn> runs for a touchdown.

So Question Two:

Do you think that Black only saw the danger of recapturing your Knight here AFTER you played <34.Nxe5!>? Because he apparently *did* realize this after your 34th move, since he gave up a whole piece rather than face the variation I just showed above there-

So OK back to the actual moves played-

Here again is the position after you played

33.e5!

click for larger view

Maybe he was afraid he would lose his <DSB> on the <b2> square there- and so felt he had no choice but to recpature

33...Bxe5?

Because he can save his DSB, and not lose a piece like he did in the game, by the admittedly hard to spot

33...Bd4!

My Shredder just showed me that resource. But just show me the player who wouldn't almost automatically play the text move of

33...Bxe5?

Which pretty much loses on the spot.

Did you see all of this happening ahead of time? If so, how far ahead?

Nice one, by the way....

heh

He can hold his position with the counter intuitive
