Nov-10-09  TheFocus: I would appreciate any information about the following book. Does anyone know of this book, and was it translated into English?

The following is from an interview with Efim Geller in the bulletins from the Fischer - Spassky 19992 match, as recorded in No Regrets by Yasser Seirawan - "I am writing a book which will include a selection of annotated games to honor Fischer’s 50th birthday. I have already signed a contract with a Russian publisher, but the number will be limited – only 2000. A lot of copies are meant as gifts. I will pay special attention to the games I played against Bobby. Fischer was young when we played and every game was a pleasure."

25 ... ♖c6-c8

But if the Black f8-rook must <PROTECT> at all cost the f7-mating square from the White d6-knight, is it really <PROTECTING> the Black c8-rook from the White d8-queen?

26 ♕d8x♖c8! 1-0

Hell no!

All of these tactical problems came about because 23 ... ♘e7-g8 <STALEMATED> the Black h8-king, meaning that the move ♘d6-f7 is not just <CHECK> but <MATE>.

Two tremendous tactical blows by Anand, 25 ♕d4-h8! and 26 ♕d8x♖c8!, all based on the simple tactical point that the Black f8-rook must <PROTECT> the f7-mating square at *all* costs.

Nov-17-09  slomarko: <jessicafischerqueen: I'm not certain, but I believe <kamikaze attack> is a girl? Plus me and <Open Defence> and <Annie K>. Also, if I'm not mistaken, <kamikaze attack> coined the term "fanboy".>

Hi JFQ, just wanted to say I think it was me who first started to use the term fanboy for the gentlemen on the Carlsen page.

Nov-18-09  Plato: <slomarko: Hi JFQ, just wanted to say I think it was me who first started to use the term fanboy for the gentlemen on the Carlsen page.>

You must be very proud, <slomarko>. Thanks to that term, we now realize that it is far more mature to insult and degrade Carlsen than to acknowledge his great results, and far more appropriate to ridicule him than to root for him. The same goes for Kramnik, Leko, Svidler, Gelfand et al., but not (of course) for the Immortal Morozevich or the Almighty Kasparov (who sadly sold his soul when he offered to teach that overrated mediocre Norwegian chump).

All objective fans, like us, are born knowing these rules. We are the voices of reason. We know that guys like Morozevich are far more talented than Carlsen could ever dream to be.

Come on, fanboys, pay attention!

<jfq> hello.

  jessicafischerqueen: <slomarko> and <Plato>

Hello boys, long time no see!

I hope you are both well. Things are pretty much the same here except they've put a new motorway through.

Now, you'll have to use the new A-45 motorway and make the switch at Paddington Crossing to the M-55 if you want to get to Bolton.

Apart from that- two points

<Point one>:

Actually I was teasing <kamikaze attack>- and I see he reacted in a very clever and magnanimous fashion.

You see, earlier he had asked who had invented the term "fanboy" so I said it was him, and I called him a girl because a long time ago he said to me

"Shut up- I don't have time to read posts by girls who type 'LOL'- I'm a busy man."

So instead of yelling at me this time, he merely typed "lol" in the thread on the TALIBAN MEMORIAL page.

I guess he remembered his initial attack on me.

<Point Two>

Along them lines, there'll be NO FURTHER ARGUMENT about <magnus> or anything else in my house. You guys can have at 'er over at the <Magnus Argument> page.

Unless <SugarDom> decides to blow the whistle on you.

Anyways nice to see you both.

Nov-18-09  Red October: so the fanboys are coming out of the closet ? :)

jessicafischerqueen: <Deffi> yes they are and also it seems someone has put "happy pills" in the TALIBAN PAGE drinking water because not only was <kamikaze attack> not ATTACKING ME as usual, also <Tony the Tiger Palmer> made a couple of extremely funny posts as well.

Who knew?

Well I suppose you did as usual.

It's so much better when everyone plays nice in the sandbox.

ILIKESEAWEED

Nov-18-09  Eyal: <fanboys> While we're on the subject of the term's history:

Earliest recorded use in the OED goes back to 1919 (in the form "fan boys"), but the one-word form and its systematic use as a "concept" seem to start from the late 1980s-early 90s.

Earliest recorded use on CG: <Oct-22-04 Nezhmetdinov: Acirce is in some ways the presiding genius of this insubstantial place - his Kramnik fanboy attitude (I KNOW your posts always attempt at balance but then there is that photo you use...) is just another thing to be interested in on this superb site which I must must pay for, sorry I haven't yet ;-(> (Vladimir Kramnik)

Earliest series of uses referring consistently to the fans of a certain player - Topalov, during Corus 2006:

<Jan-25-06 Suddenly we have about ten million Topalov fanboys blitzing the site (Corus Wijk aan Zee (2006)) [...] Jan-27-06 I wouldn't be surprised at all if Chucky won and I'm hoping he's looking to show Topalov what's what and crush the hopes of all the Topalov <fanboys> in this site (Ivanchuk vs Topalov, 2006) [...] Jan-28-06 Do you mean all hell will break loose tomorro(w) when the Topalov fanboys throw a hissy fit after their hero gets spanked? (Anand vs Lautier, 1997) [...] Jan-29-06 Some of this Topalov fanboys are getting on my nerves. (Anand vs Gelfand, 2006)>

Earliest recorded use on the Carlsen page: <Dec-12-07 Icyclemort: As much as i am a fan of Carlsen, Kjetil Lie really sounds like a cheap public relations guy. Either that, or he really is more of a fawning fanboy than most around here. And its not the first time, the blog of his! Even Henrik Carlsen is a far more objective critic of his sons performances. Honestly.> (Magnus Carlsen)
