| Dec-15-09 | | Boomie: <visayanbraindoctor: Unfortunately while there are a lot of outgoing connections from the limbic system to the cerebral cortex - that is from the emotional part of the brain to the rationale part - there are few connections from the cortex to the limbic system. This means that it is far easier for emotions to influence rationality; passion more often than not dictates to reason.> Thanks for the brain anatomy lesson.
I'm not sure I agree with your conclusion though:
<This means that it is far easier for emotions to influence rationality; passion more often than not dictates to reason.> Do we really know the effects of these neurons firing? Perhaps the limbic input has nothing to do with influence. Or maybe the responses from the rational mind stokes the limbic system. To keep these loops alive requires a degree of obsessive thought. This triggers the emotional response desired. I would guess that most emotional responses are caused by obsessive thoughts rather than any "natural" cause. The emotion appears to be the problem but the real culprit is pulling the strings. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Tim> by "emotional responses" you mean extreme emotional responses that are destructive to self and others, correct? Because the vast majority of "emotional responses" to various stimuli are not only "normal," they are a lot of fun as well. I was thinking that your observation is particularly relevant to the genesis of racism- Almost all theories of how an individual becomes racist center on the subject learning this response from other people, usually in the childhood environment. In this case, the cortex- area of learning- would be in a sense 'perverting' the limbic system by engendering feelings of hatred towards the group(s) you were taught to hate. The flip side, happily, seems to be that people can be taught to reject their racist learning and understand its fundamental irrationality. In this case, the limbic response of hatred/revulsion towards the other group would be tempered, or eliminated, by information originating in the cortex. The "obsessive thought" you refer to would presumably be a way of thinking that was learned in one's environment. Any other origin of "obsessive thought" is regarded to be symptomatic of mental illness, which is almost always thought to include an important genetic basis, or biological predisposition towards a mental/emotional disorder. These groups should be discussed separately, in the sense that there is no evidence that people suffering from the "obsessive thoughts" characterized by a variety of mental disorders are any more likely to be racist than anyone else. Once racism is instilled strongly enough in a subject (a child, of course), this can lead to obsessional preoccupation with the targeted out group. And this would not just be on an individual basis, but also systemic- The National Front, for example, centers obsessively on one issue- barring non-caucasian immigration to Britain. Anyways, good post. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: And just for the record, in case anyone's wondering how this thread got started- <Jane Eyre> (the cg.com member, not the fictional character) posted his delightful opinions on the <London Classic page> that he does not enjoy having Indians, Asians, or Black folk for neighbors. Therefore- ipso fatso, if he is not actually a member of the National Front, he agrees with their political platform- which only has the one point, as I've already said. No darkies are welcome.
Charming, just charming. |

| Dec-15-09 | | Boomie: <Dr. Jessie>
Yes. The use of the word "obsessive" implies illness. I meant thoughts that are designed to elicit an emotional response. One can become addicted to an emotion. The mind creates scenarios that provoke this desired response. Thinking can be a great mischief maker. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Tim: Forensic Psychiatrist> I have to agree, doctor. As a fan of Police Dramas and Horror Films, the mechanism you describe is often portrayed. In fact, it's being portrayed right now in the episode of <Law and Order- Criminal Intent> that I'm watching. The acting student is training to play a serial killer. A method actor, he thinks that he will not be able to portray the role properly unless he feels the 'real emotion' of a serial killer. He does this by training his mind to elicit these emotions- one method he used was to plaster his wall with photos of pretty women and dead animals and then stare at it for hours. I haven't got to the end of the episode yet, but I'm betting he will not turn out to be the real killer because on this show the "guest star" is always the killer, and he's not the guest star. Bloody guest stars take all the fun out of us viewers solving the mystery. |

I made sure to put in tons of <hot chicks with no clothes on> to get the number of male viewers up. | | jessicafischerqueen: <boz> thanks for the suggestion! While I, like you, also find ritual suicide to be humorous, it's not quite as edgy as making the ironic link between our US Champion, a Japanese-American, and the week his country dropped two big ones on his country.
I really wish you'd open a forum <Boz> |

| Dec-16-09 | | Boomie: <Jessie Coppola: Producer, Director, Writer, Third Lamia from the Left> So...there are these snaky, blood thirsty, mermaids with wet T-Shirts who are going to choke on my blood after various amorous overtures? I love it! Good old Bollywood story. Boy meets Lamia. Boy gives blood. Lamia dies. Just like the final act of Hamlet only this time with snakes. A closer analysis taking into accout your extensive work with the Bee Girls is forthcoming. Getting done by alien girls will be the death of me. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Tim> did you really watch the video? Thank you! Your thematic summary seems dead on to me.
Check out the poem <Thor> wrote at the top of his Profile- when I read it this morning, it reminded me of "The Lamia" and I thought I'd make a video about it to serve as a kind of "bookend" to the poem. Also, trust Peter Gabriel to write a song about the Lamia where he refuses to just flat out demonize female sexuality. What a mensch. I spent from 10:00 AM to 2:30 AM straight- without moving or eating- building the video and then trying to publish it somewheres. I haven't had time to look at your IMPORTANT SECRET futurist document yet even. I have to go to work in a few hours.
It's a good thing that I have now mastered the ancient Korean technique of teaching, upright with my eyes open, while remaining fast asleep. |
