I couldn't agree more- most students require a mixture of stern challenge and also encouragement and understanding from a teacher. Great coaches are tuned to the exact mixture a given student will best respond to.

However, in a tutorial situation all that's required is that the two personalities match.

That means they have to agree on the goal- If simple enjoyment of chess is the goal you don't need a teacher.

If winning at chess is the goal then a good teacher- a mentor even- is necessary.

Except for Bobby.

Kasparov was mentored by Mikhail Botvinnik. That turned out to be a good match.

I think the Kasparov-Carlsen duo will prove a good match also.

But the great thing about loving chess- for anyone at any level- is the freedom to enjoy whatever you want to about the game.

And there's so much to enjoy besides destroying someone.

I love destroying people personally, and when I lose I want to throw my computer out the window.

But that doesn't stop me from loving the aesthetics of the game, my friends in the game, or the great history of the game.

Mar-28-10  achieve: <At any rate, "great" chess players probably don't remember all the baby steps that us lesser folk are still taking. if they need to explain some relationship between pieces/squares that seems completely obvious to them they would probably become very frustrated and bored.> Excellent analysis and "conclusion". Though of course great players "can" be(come) very good teachers/coaches (Botwinnik, Euwe...). One doesn't exclude the other, either.

I didn't know about Jordan's failure as a coach.

Excellent post, <madly>.

some of my photographs

Mar-28-10  hms123: <deffi> Stunning photos! I hope that one day I will be able to see those sights in person.
Mar-28-10  Open Defence: thanks <hms123> I am uploading more, I would suggest a visit to Rajasthan in the North West, and Kerala in the South West if you do visit India :)
Mar-28-10  hms123: <deffi> I will check back on the photos. Thanks for the advice. My wife's parents travelled through India and southeast Asia many years ago and really enjoyed it.

Our daughter has been to Thailand--I always say that her parents seem to be able to afford things that we can't. You will discover this phenomenon yourself in the not-too-distant future.

Yes those rare Yerbouti artifacts look priceless. My first reaction upon seeing the set was to fire up my Movie Maker and make a slide show with the music of CHAIYA CHAIYA but I don't want any Bollywood copyright lawyers hunting me down.

Fabulous beauty- are those your wedding rings?

SCORE

Mar-28-10  Open Defence: those are cheap earings I bought at a roadside stall for about $2 USD :)

Bollywood is full of copyright violations, just ensure you mention the upload is for fan purposes and how much you like Shah Rukh Khan :)

TheAlchemist: <Jessica> Generally I wouldn't regard Queen as too prog, they have covered a wide range of different styles throughout their career (I've done a brief list already at Travis Bickle chessforum), however some songs definitely would fit in the genre, you should check out The Prophet's Song, March Of The Black Queen, Innuendo and The Millionaire Waltz among others. Their albums Queen II and A Night At The Opera are probably the most progressive on the whole, but again, the songs usually differed a lot, sometimes in quality as well.
