jessicafischerqueen: Ooh ok then I will. Which team do I cheer for?

Is it the final game or the start of the series?

Aren't the Blackhawks under some kind of coach's curse that says they will never win?

My mom told about one team that has a curse on it.

She knows everything about hockey.

I know Philadelphia beat up the Red Army and the Russian coach pulled the team off the ice.

I think that happened before Bobby won the Stanley Cup of chess though.

This will give you an idea who to hate with a vengeance and who to root for. The philedphia flypapers beat The Montreal Canadiens in the last series and stopped you beloved Nationals from advancing to The Stanley Cup Finals to play The Hawks!!!

Flyers -Red Army game you refer to was in 1976. Less than a week a go I showed some youtubes about it to my kids. I remember watching it like it was yesterday.

May-26-10  madlydeeply: it would behoove you to get "All Flyred Up" my dear.
May-26-10  madlydeeply: bobby clarke hero of the "broad street bullies". I guess technically he is a canadian.

May-26-10  hangingenprise: jessica: the flyers are skating for
the cup and the blackhawks are showing up.
May-26-10  crawfb5: I was listening to Shawn Colvin's CD of covers, named appropriately enough, <Cover Girl> at lunch today. She did <If These Walls Could Talk>, which reminded me what a great songwriter Jimmy Webb has been over the years (By the Time I Get to Phoenix/Galveston/Witchita Lineman/MacArthur Park/The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and others). I kept replaying it all the way home.

The only two versions I could find on YouRude were one by Amy Grant (ugh!) and one by Nanci Griffith. Nanci is another of my favorites. Here's her version:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x44b...

One of my favorite songs by Nanci, <Late Night Grande Hotel>:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvNg...

Nanci can be quite the storyteller in her own right. Listen to the difference between her girlish speaking voice and when she really cuts loose in a song. Here's <Love at the Five and Dime> with a longer than usual setup:

May-27-10  madlydeeply: y'know i'm always daydreaming about such a "university". I want to describe political events completely in terms of power without any pie in the sky rhetoric attached. So when Gulf oil busts a union in Nigeria by strafing the demonstration with soldiers riding in gulf helicopters.... describe it in terms of body count, costs, and projected profits. No more bogus "Oh the humanity" rhetoric when decisions are NEVER made with "humans" in mind...the coalescion (is that a word?) of power is always the sole motivation for decisions. So i had an idea of making baseball cards...but for presidents...have a their grinning mug on the front...then the "stats" on the back of the card would be things like....total body count of their wars, major campaign contributers and how they profited from backing the PREZ, the successful executive branch power grabs (like Roosevelt's 1933 Emergency war powers, act...which has never been repealed), their contribution to the whittling away of the bill of rights...etc.

BUT I WAS TOO DAMN LAZY

then i wondered about a website or something that tracks lobbyist contributions to politicians and follow up on senator/congresman/president actions... but that made me realize how COMPLEX our government is! that would be an impossible task that would require all the NSA computers....which means the NSA wouldn't have the resources to track my telephone conversations, emails and online porn consumption. think about it...533 congressmen,.... THOUSANDS of lobbyists...how does one track all this behavior...of throwing money around, making promises, backstabbing...Washington DC must be in a state of CONSTANT UTTER ANARCHY when you think about it. Hmmm i must ask Mr. Thrajin. about this.

late.

oh...did canada do what the usa did in regards to chinese labor? the minute the railroads were built it was suddenly ILLEGAL to be a chinese worker...and there formed a chinese "underground railroad" to sneak all those laborers back to china. Hmmm Vancouver was probably part of this underground railroad just like portland and seattle. I read about this in "China Men" by Maxine Hong Kingston.

Gosh Jess you can take me up to the clouds and the next day bring me right back down into morosity with your "danniken" jabs...

May-27-10  madlydeeply: ms queen....i NEVER said i BELIEVE anything i think its MYTHOLOGY and ENTERTAINING so you need to LIGHTEN UP LADY

Geezus!!

exhausting.

May-27-10  madlydeeply: lessee...also...in the usa, there is a "three strikes" policy...so if a fellah is caught with marijuana three times he becomes a FELON...felons have no rights have to check in with a govt. agent etc. Also illegal aliens do not have the rights "citizens" have so you see there is a constant erosion of civil rights amongst the working class. This has nothing to do with the illuminati.

Ronald Reagan with his "line item veto" idea is an example of the executive branch grabbing power from the legislative branch. Has nothting to do with the KNIGHTS TEMPLAR or even the FREEMASONS.

i dunno you gots some kind of chip on your shoulder. boh.

lessee...first i read conspiracy theory because it blurs with history...and thats entertaining. And exactly what is the line between the two? is that for YOU to decide? By the way, Isaac Newton was looking for the Philosopher's stone...which makes him a COMPLETE TOTAL FOOKIN' IDIOT to you. However his theory of gravity you undoubtedly worship as ushering in a whole era of rational thought. So where is the dividing line? see...mythology drives science which drives mythology (UFO stuff)...so where is the dividing line between fools and geniuses? This if for YOU to decide? HA! You are such a whippersnapper.

How about tesla. do you "believe" in Alternate Current?" wow what a genius. Do you "believe" in "static energy" that exists in all around us that can be harnessed for free? wow what a COMPLETE FOOKIN IDIOT!! hmmm. see? ideas only matter when they are relevant to power structures...otherwise they are "crazy".

if you are going to keep track of these like an "idea watchdog" then you are going to have a whole lot of outbursts in your life.

Funny also,, there is some advice i attribute to Feynman... (paraphrasing) something about inspiration occuring when one is not at work...but doing something completely different than working...like taking a shower, then inspiration can "pop" into one's head. So i take that to mean that the more ideas bumping around one's head, the more chance of inspiration. what's funny is i take Feynam as inspiration to have an open mind and accept ideas no matter how harebrained...and you use Feynman to try to terrorise me into narrowing my mind! HA!

life is funny.

Plus there are a hellalot of blocks in that great pyramid. oop!

I am sorry, I have never seen Tarrasch's obituary of Steinitz. If it was really published (which I rather doubt -- I think Tarrasch may have been gussying up a good story here), it would have been in the Deutsche Schachzeitung in 1897. But I can't find that year of the journal on the web.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Big Crawdaddy>

Thanks for that endgame study!

I managed to solve it even.

1.d5 Kxe4 (or else the d-pawn scores- black knight cannot get back in time)

2.Nf6+ (only move to protect d-pawn- plus the Knight has to get out of the way with tempo)

2...Kf5 (only way to have a chance to catch the passer)

3.Ne4 (protecting the passer and now if the King captures the white horse he can't catch up to the passer

May-29-10  crawfb5: Very good! The study continues:

click for larger view

3...Kxe4 4. d6 Ng3 5. d7 Nf5+ 6. Kh7 1-0 (not 6. Kg6? Ne7+ and then 7...Nc6 nor 6. Kg5? Nd6 and the pawn cannot Queen because of the Nf7+ fork)

jessicafischerqueen: Yes tks mstr I played out the whole thing to checkmate against my SHRUBBER. Very healthy puzzle. Is it a composition? Or is it from a game?

How did the black horse get in that corner?

"A Knight in the corner is like little Jack Horner"

--Philidor

(not the chess master- but rather my friend Ed Philidor down to the mill)

May-29-10  crawfb5: It's a composition. All of them I've been posting lately have been. Even when they look like "normal" endgames, in a good composition, pieces are where they are for specific reasons (many of these are from published sources or competitions).
