Thanks for your continued, and valuable feedback for our Chess History Video project. As a lifelong teacher, I'm guessing you understand how crucial that is to the student. And yes of course we want updates in my forum, especially since you are currently taking a lot of time and effort to reorganize your many webpages for us. The <angelfire> pages are blocked in Korea, but not for me- I just used my trusty <US Proxy> program. |

Your analysis of <Schlecter-Marshall> Cambridge Springs 1904 is up to your usual standard- which is to say absolutely top rate. Your thoroughness always makes me think you have the interests of the reader first and foremost in your mind. You always make sure we know where analysis comes from- you list links to other games, you attribute prior analysis, you mention when a computer is being used, and you include fascinating historical details about the game from reliable sources- such as Schlecter himself from the Tournament Book. Fascinating. I'm just using my board and your analysis here- you give <6.c3> a <?!> which is helpful- it made me stop to take a good look at it. I guess the <?> part is that White should probably recover his material here with <6.Nxd4>, but White deserves the <!> also for sharpness- quick development of the Queen Knight. <6.c3?!>:
click for larger view<21.Bxf2+!> Yes! This is the most exciting move in the game in my view. Marshall gives back material to blunt White's assault, as you point out- click for larger viewYou do an excellent job of explaining how a very sharp try by <Schlecter> was blunted and then parried by <Marshall> who was at the height of his game at this time. I also like (as usual!) how you link so many other sources for further explanation and background. Finally, including the ideas of some of your students is grand- nobody else ever does that. This is a unique style of annotation, and I could tell in one second that you did this and no one else. Excellent work and much appreciated <AJ>! |

| Aug-08-10 | | twinlark: Hey Jess
Just thought I'd drop in and let you know how much I enjoyed the Menchik video. I was actually going to suggest a series on the women's world championship, but then thought to check your account and found the video. It was wonderful, and as usual the easy flow of the video belies the hard work that went into the research. I was impressed that Alekhine stood up for her. Incidentally, her peak rating was calculated by someone or other at 2390, which to me sounds ludicrous for a person that could beat Euwe and Sultan Khan (speaking of whom...) Comment: I notice that all the chess positions expressed are final positions against some famous players, but there are no examples of her combinations or how she won her games, as you have with other players. |

 | | Annie K.: <Larks> Jess didn't know how to incorporate dynamic replays in her movies yet, back then. :) May be worth re-doing sometime...?
<Sultan Khan (speaking of whom...)> Indeed! <Jess> - I was going to recommend him too. |

| Aug-08-10 | | twinlark: <Annie> - Ah.
<Jess>, <Annie>, <Tim> I had to watch the Charousek series a second time. You guys have done a beautiful job, it makes you weep. Of all the players in history, Charousek is the one that evokes <if only, if only...> One technical aspect that I really like is that the dynamic replays are always from the side of the board played by the person being studied. The White at bottom default can get awfully tedious, so well done. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Doggimus> thanks mate I'm glad you found the series "wicked." <Sultan Khan> is a great idea and there are tons of photos of him on the internets too. First however there's Pill and then Ruby Slippers and then the Loch Nezhmetdinov Monster. |

Thanks so much for the note.
Maybe I could do an analysis of a Pillsbury game, and you could link to it? (In your video.) - aj |

I saw one of your other fans posted something about Sultan Khan. I was also fascinated by the story of this player. I told many people that one day I was going to write a book on Khan. Years ago - I met an Indian fellow. (At a World Open, late 1980's or early 1990's.) He told me that he was a relative of Khan's. He sent me a whole trunk full of stuff, most of it, I never even had a chance to go through. There were pictures, some of them so old that they falling apart. Lots of other stuff too. A friend of mine - who owned some "mini-warehouses" - out on Pensacola Beach, offered to store that trunk for me. (He said that I moved around too much and that he had better store it for safe-keeping.) In 2004, Hurricane Ivan washed it out into the Gulf of Mexico. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <AJ> That's horrifying- losing the irreplaceable chess treasure pales in comparison to what happened to others. <say a prayer for the families still without homes> Your web page is horrifying, but has great dignity- a must read. I didn't "know" any of this-

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <AJ>- linking one of your Pillsbury analyses, or a new one, to the documentary is a great idea. Although the documentary doesn't exist yet.
I will email you a list of the games we are currently putting in for sure- actually if you notice that we are missing any "must have brilliant Pillsbury games" please let me know. I'll email you later today.
But yes great idea let's do it. |
