GRRRRRR I acidentally saw the number 1 song getting this photo. Aint life grand?! : ( On the lighter side after I read 99 Beatles songs I probably would have noticed the number 1 song wasn't on the list yet. LOL! P.S. | Sep-24-10 | | Russian Grandmasters: Ha! So which song did they say is the best? I hope it's not too obvious. "Let it Be" and "Yesterday" are great songs but they are also played every day in every country. Those two songs are on every single Korean karaoke tape. Which is as it should be. |

| Sep-24-10 | | Russian Grandmasters: <Symon Winawer> claims he didn't read any chess books. Ever. Was he lying?
YOU BE THE JUDGE.
How would one prove that he did? Possibly a photograph. |

Many a time I've wanted to drop you a message, or a question about chess history, and wished you had a forum. -JFQ |

| Sep-25-10 | | crawfb5: I just stumbled across another <Atlantic City> game. You'll love this -- it was one of Mlotkowski's games in an article written by <Hilbert> posted on a <Polish> site. Fortunately, I was able to decipher the Polish piece abbreviations in the notation (H=Q, W=R, G=B, S=N). At this rate, I may have a complete games collection by 2020 or so... |

| Sep-25-10 | | Mrs. Alekhine: <Big> excellent work! Another rare game to add to your <Stasch>. What method did you use to figure out Polish notations? Can you please post the link to the Polish website with the <Dr. Hibbert> article? <2020> don't give up <Big>- nobody else in the world has collected these games and if you manage even half of them, that's a significant contribution to chess history. Personally I think it would be fine to make a games collection right now, if you knew for sure the missing games are "lost" or were not recorded in the first place. Although one assumes that they were indeed recorded at some point. Did you know that <Seymon Alapin> was notorious for absconding with tournament games scores and then not letting anyone else look at them? Strange but, apparently, true. |
|
| Sep-25-10 | | crawfb5: <Stasch> hahahahaha http://translate.google.com/transla... I would recommend going back to the Polish original if you want to try to play over any games because Google's translator seems to do odd things to these game scores. It's in algebraic notation, so all you really need to do is figure out the piece abbreviations. At one point I not only knew them for German, but I knew the actual names as well. That was years ago, when the wetware still worked. Anyway, if you see an opening that goes 1. e4 e5 2. <X>f3 <X>c6 3. <Y>b5, etc., you know that <X> is Knight and <Y> is Bishop. It's not too difficult to work out with a complete game score and a board in front of you. Or you could consult a lookup table like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebr.... There are two Atlantic City games in CG's database and I have about a dozen and a half more, which is almost a third of the total. I have not finished entering all of the games from <ACB> into my database yet. I'm sure there are more game scores out there. I'm not sure how easy it will be for me to find them. There may be more in the <Eagle> from mid-1921 on, but that's beyond the online archives. Helms might have even published more in the <1922> issue of <ACB>, but that's not available online either. Helms seems like he should be a nexus, as he was the tournament director as well as a columnist and publisher. A couple of Sournin's games were from the <Washington Post> and the Mlotkowski game was originally in the <Philadelphia Inquirer>, but neither of those have the kind of online archive that I find useful. There might be other games in, for instance, one of the Chicago papers. Hilbert's book on Whitaker probably has all of Whitaker's games (I have 3 of his 9 -- he had one unplayed game) and Hilbert has a chapter on Atlantic City in the <Essays on Chess History> book, but I don't have access to either. I don't think there is any rush. I can keep this simmering as a low-level background task while I putter away at other projects. I need to finish St Louis 1904 once the game uploads are processed, and then I'm thinking about Bradley Beach 1929 next (AA's first tournament as WC!) and maybe even Ramsgate 1929. |

| Sep-26-10 | | Mrs. Alekhine: Yes we have lots of time, especially given how few people actually care about this in the first place. But that's kind of an asset in a strange way.
For example, when <chessgames.com> started out, our pioneers such as <Karpova>, <Calli>, <Honza Cervenka>, <keypusher>, and other notables posted a good deal of interesting- and accurate- historical information on the games pages. I have no idea how many people have actually read these posts- but I can tell you that seven years later, I've found them <absolutely indispensible>. I think historians, not just chess historians, have to be in it for the long haul. Man if I were you I would buy those books even if you didn't want them. That sounds strange but if you can afford it, this might be crucial to amassing as many games as you can. I'm not short of money at the moment, so I didn't mind shelling out huge amounts to garner very small bits of information I couldn't find on the internets. Also, <Homer Simpson> aside, a road trip to New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago might be in order. Work, and your wife and dogs, might get in the way, but isn't chess history more important? Yes <Bradley Beach> is a fabled event! That should be fascinating.
Also, thanks for posting those links and for the <TOP SECRET HOT TIPS>. J |

<Also my sincere thanks to <You Called> for commenting on that same post.> Very funny, amusing, I thought... It seems corny, yet I am still giggling at this what Dom calls a brilliant typo (ok - word replacement) from the subconscious. |
