Feb-02-11  TheFocus: I picked up <Endgame> last night, but have only read about 60 pages so far and skimmed the rest. It doesn't look like a hatchet job.

I will give a review after the weekend, but so far, it is a good read. Found a half dozen mistakes, but nothing major yet.

I am surprised that Brady repeats the old "only played one game in 1969" thing, when that has been disproved. That game was played in December 1968 as proven in <Chess Life> and the New York Times.

<jess> There is a photo of Carmine Nigro in the book and a picture of one-year-old Bobby.

My full review will take a few days to do.

Feb-02-11  TheFocus: <jess> You had a picture recently of Bobby in a leather visor and wanted to know where it came from.

It is from an 2 page article called <The Sweet Rose of Success>. An accompanying photo has Bobby laying down smelling a rose. The magazine is possibly from Iceland. The year is 1972. Bobby is in a hotel in Reykjavic re-playing a game against Spassky.

jessicafischerqueen: <TheFocus> Thanks for the provenance of that Fischer photograph- and your preliminary notes on <Brady's> new work.

I'm a little surprised that he would get some facts wrong that, like you say, are well known these days. Also, I noticed that he did in fact get youtube to strike down his lecture series on Bobby.

I certainly don't blame him for that, however, chess history is tough enough without getting paid eh?

I hope your new book on <Bobby> goes to number one on NY Times best seller list.

I hope you make a million dollars. I'll be buying several copies myself and mailing them to friends.

I'll also be buying <Brady's> new book.

Why not email him and tell him about the errata?

That's the test eh? If a historian has mistakes pointed out- do they make an effort to address the problem?

Or do they start shrieking like a wounded badger and publicly accuse <Edward Winter> of being an Anti-Semite?

Needless to say, only one of those responses is of any value to the chess fan who actually cares about what really happened- and only that.

Feb-02-11  notyetagm: F Caruana vs Ivanchuk, 2011

28 ♘g3-f1?

click for larger view

Here Caruana (White) has played a very subtle error that Ivanchuk (Black) pounces on immediately.

As GM Maurice Ashley would say, what is the <DRAWBACK> of playing 28 ♘g3-f1? ?

28 ... ♘e6-d4!

click for larger view

The <DRAWBACK> of 28 ♘g3-f1? is that it <LEFT BEHIND> the e2-square.

With 28 ... ♘e6-d4! the Black d4-knight now <FORKS A FORKING SQUARE>. That is, the Black d4-knight is attacking both the <UNDEFENDED> White c2-queen *and* the e2-checking/forking square, which White has just reduced his control over with the very hard to see blunder 28 ♘g3-f1?.

The point is that a move like 29 ♕c2-b2, trying to protect both the White c3-pawn and the e2-tactical base simply drops the c3-pawn with 29 ... ♕c5xc3! because the White b2-queen is then <OVERLOADED>.

(VARIATION)
29 ♕c2-b2 ♕c5xc3! <overloaded: c3,e2>

click for larger view

A *tremendous* example of Ivanchuk's <TACTICAL ALERTNESS> and of what GM Ashley calls <DRAWBACK CHESS>, looking for the weakness (weakening the e2-square) in your opponent's last move (28 ♘g3-f1?). Caruana is a strong 2700-rated GM and he completely overlooked this possibility.

Feb-02-11  TheFocus: <jess> I am planning a review, hopefully done next week. I will point out the mistakes that I find.

So far, I highly recommend buying this book. It is not a hatchet job. I like what he has to say about Bobby's childhood.

One problem I saw. Not ENOUGH early pictures. There is one of Fischer studying chess in the bathtub, but I had already seen those in DeLucia's book.

I am sending a copy to Bill Nigro to see if he has any disagreement with what Brady says about Carmine Nigro.

<I'm a little surprised that he would get some facts wrong that, like you say, are well known these days. Also, I noticed that he did in fact get youtube to strike down his lecture series on Bobby.>

Actually, Pete Tamburro offered me the transcript of that series for my book. I ought to ask him why it was taken down.

Feb-03-11  MostlyAverageJoe: Hi, sorry for the late reply to MostlyAverageJoe chessforum -- I've been away.

I was considering recording & sending you an mp3, but Google translator is surprisingly good in this respect. I had to misspell Najdorf's first name to get it right, but I can vouch for the result -- it could pass for native PL speaker without any problems.

  jessicafischerqueen: New youtube chess playlist

<Topalov by Kingscrusher>

FIDE Candidate Master Tryfon Gavriel annotates games by Veselin Topalov, one of the most feared players in chess history. Included are all 12 of his World Championship games against Viswanathan Anand.

Feb-03-11  achieve: Great job on the playlists! Really. Very useful.

Something alltogether different - I "bumped" into these clips of Kevin Smith (director of eg the film 'Dogma') delivering a monologue on a meeting with Prince, The Artist, who wanted Kevin to do a documentary for him... Long story short, <Kevin Smith> is one talented storyteller, and had me smiling and laughing all through, this is standup level I think... And of course he makes fun of Prince, one of my musical idols, but still, this cracks me up. Very smooth talker, Kevin.

Anyways if you have the time perhaps you'd like to watch a bit of it. My link is to part 1 of 4, and watching the whole thing might be boring. Just wanted to share it, as I am at this moment into part 3, and it's some hilarious stuff, nothing fancy, "just storytelling" - which is what attracted me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gy_c...

Feb-03-11  achieve: Ah, it was part of a Q&A K Smith did on a "college tour", and a DVD even came from it, 'An Eveneng With Kevin Smith'

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0346952/

OK - enough praise, he's obviously a talented guy.

Feb-03-11  TheFocus: Well, I read most of <Endgame> by Frank Brady and I must say that Brady did an incredible job. There were a few mistakes, chronologically, historically and factual, but overall the book should be on the bookshelf of every Fischer fan or lover of chess.

This is better than <Profile of A Prodigy>. This is an instant classic.

Go out and buy this book. Buy two - one for yourself, the other for a friend or your local library.

Here's a very, very interesting interview with Chuky, translated by our one and only <Polarmis>; what a stellar effort he puts in, also with the live translations of GM Shipov's comments.

I'll be looking at his games for sure, and feel free to drop by with a few positions if you've already looked at the games.

wwall: <TheFocus> Any way to list even the minor mistakes in Endgame? Edward Winter said he (we) sent several pages to Brady, but they were not included in the final copy. I have found a few minor errors, usually about a chess tournament, what place Fischer ended up, and perhaps some chronological errors.
