| Apr-27-11 | | Boomie: Boomie: <jessicafischerqueen: <Tim> is Christine Young Neil Young's daughter?>
Turns out there is a Christine Young masquarading as a travelling minstrel waif. Naturally the real McCoy from Montreal is a far more sordid affair. Something to do with naughty bits, which is funnier than any sort of musical shenanigans. Except for Professor Peter Schickele, of course, who unearthed the rightly forgotten music of the justly unknown P. D. Q. Bach. I got Neils to spray his screen when I introduced this lunatic to him. Here's a modest example of his work:

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <fab4> yes good to hear- and might I add a comment on that topic- When one gets a FEN in the face and is asked "what's the best continuation" you already know there is one- in this case a closed position and the only possible breakthrough, the "one two" punch with discovered check, is not hard to spot. But look at the Puzzle Solver comments on this- those guys go at it every day and they marvelled at the depth of the idea. My real point: it's not hard to spot the breakthrough- however, it's not easy to win the continuation against your chess engine. I spent three hours doing just that against my "Shredder Mark III Classic" set on 12 ply and "move when it feels like" setting. Three hours because of the necessity for a few "take backs" on my part. Not an easy position to convert, not by any stretch of the imagination. In fact I'd go further- I don't think one could say that the finish here is "a matter of technique." It's a matter of a long struggle, at least for the club level player. |
|
| Apr-27-11 | | fab4: TBH I just looked at the position and Rd5 was really begging to be played. How long do you think Tal would have pondered Rd5 ?! lol... I accept your point completely though.. The breakthu.. yes........ but the rest? Over the board? ... |
|
| Apr-27-11 | | fab4: I would just add, before I depart, that the things you do for this site, and your work elsewhere, leave a wonderful and extraordinary impression. Those videos. Jeez... I'm so impressed. And I know this is an 'open' forum.. whatever ! |
|
| Apr-28-11 | | Boomie: <jessicafischerqueen: Man that was truly horrifying...> Well, at least we can say she will remain forever Young. I blame Montreal. They don't speak American there. Did you enjoy the play by play music clip? They had me at "And their off!" You can't miss with Schickele. He's a laff riot. The 42nd annual Marmot Run Through the Fetters is this weekend. Wish you were here to see this spectacle. |

| Apr-28-11 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Jess I think you're on to something with the notion there's something eery with all those old commercials. That Tareyton Cigarrettes ad looks like a bad episode of a Twilight Zone episode, and the Hamms Beer commercial with the sky blue waters looks like a scene from Carnival of Souls LOL!! ; P http://youtu.be/o83xxWCel8g |

| Apr-28-11 | | Travis Bickle: Jess here's a clip from The Beatles Anthology Project. Way back in the early days Paul Macca's school pal George Harrison got accepted into the band by John Lennon because he knew all the chords to this song called 'Raunchy'. It's a fact! ; P http://youtu.be/vbqSRbEmp_k
P.S. They still sound cool together & have that magic, can you imagine if John Lennon had been there to plug in the amps! |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Travis> it's true, there's something really surreal about those old commercials to the modern viewer. I wonder why someone doesn't start using that form again, to capture the nostalgia market? Aren't people from the 60s still alive?
I think they have a lot of money too.
Speaking of nostalgia thanks for the latest <Beatles> history clip- it's really too bad how <Paul> eventually got on <George's> nerves so badly. I think part of the reason <George> felt so resentful was because they had been school mates. There was a similar "extra feeling of betrayal" for Tony Banks as well, because he had been best friends with Peter Gabriel since Middle School. I bet <Paul> feels older and wiser these days, particularly since only he and <Ringo> are left now. |

| Apr-28-11 | | Travis Bickle: Jess here's another short clip of the 3 remaining Beatles, (around 1995), talking about the old days recording. http://youtu.be/pCAEQcCauq4 |

| Apr-29-11 | | Boomie: The old TV commercials may have been a bit creepy. Well, they made us want to duck and cover. But at least they didn't allow doctors and lawyers on the air in those days. Imagine a boob tube free of miracle cures for bladder issues. Besides there was a ditzy almost fatalist humor in 60s TV. We were all going to fry in the hard rain anyway so why get serious about Maypo or Hertz (run OJ). Stan Freberg was especially adept at producing some hilarious ads. Here are some modest examples. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PauD...

| Apr-29-11 | | Travis Bickle: Jess that's from The Beatles Anthology 6 VHS tapes or dvd's Project they did back in the 90's. Beatle people complained there wasn't enough Fab 3's together during that project, but for some reason they were filmed mostly separate. Which was kind of a bummer, but still a great documentary! |

| Apr-29-11 | | LIFE Master AJ: <<And I get stuck with "ground round".>> Lately, I would be happy with any meat in my diet. (Mostly chesse and peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches.) Afraid I am not much on cooking.
Course - I know that you were joking ... most of my previous bosses were ... well, I better not put it into print, I would violate all the rules for kibitzing on this server! |
