Apr-30-11  Open Defence: also there is an oversimplification that engines are good at tactics and bad at strategy

in some types of positions the engines can exploit a static weakness very well due to their excellent heuristics, they exploit passed pawns, loose pieces etc

in some types of closed positions they find it hard to lock into a sequence due to several alternatives evaluating the same and end up shuffling pieces like rooks and bishops between one square and another

in some types of tactical complications even the very best engines suffer from a really strong horizon effect especially at shorter depths and require several hours of deep analyses often with sliding back and forth to find the right moves

some types of positions are engine busters and engines just lose their way but this is very very rare to get in a game and its usually a composed position (though from some posts at other website forums Fischer's games seem to have a lot of these positions)

so its not just tactics vs strategy and where the human team has to work hard is to ensure there are no loose pieces and no surprise tactical shots overlooked which is quite difficult to do

Laplanders use reindeer mules to round up their herds. They moved to mules when lemmings proved to be a disastrous choice.

This is a clear infringement of copyrights. My people will be contacting your people to work out a settlement.

jessicafischerqueen: <Tim> my lawyer <hms123> will be pleased to hear from you.

He's top rate but will still work for scale.

Nashville is still abuzz over his stunning victory in the notorious "Bass Lake" Class Action suit, in which the denizens won a three million pound's worth of fish food settlement from the local Angler's Association.

jessicafischerqueen: <playground player> I was considering shortening your handle to <pp> as some do, but unfortunately I can't because I hear the sentence "Subject plus dong-sa plus pp" around sixty times a day at work.

That's "Kongish" for the basic grammatical form for the "pp" or "past participle."

So it would be too confusing for me to call you <pp>.

On to less serious matters, thanks for that fascinating information on THE EVILS OF CHESS, I was happy to learn of the possible historical background for that in the Islamic world.

Might I say that you *did* get where you are today by being a Middle East Studies Major?

jessicafischerqueen: I'm extremely jealous. I have to work like a dog for the next three months now in Korea.

I hope they don't eat me!

AHAHAHAHAAH

No letters, please, I am not responsible for 5000 years of Korean culture. Not to mention, there is a Dog Restaurant not ten minutes walk from my house.

jessicafischerqueen: Why journalists who don't know any chess history should NEVER write the obituaries for chessmasters.

<Episode One: Robert McFadden>

http://www.nytimes.com/1992/06/29/u...

New York Times journalist <Robert McFadden's> obituary of Mikhail Tal:

According to McFadden,

<"Mr. Tal... occasionally played tournament or match games at his hospital bed, as he did once in the early 1960's with <<<Bobby Fischer,>>> the American who would later become world champion.">

Absolutely untrue. <Tal> never once "played" any or part of a Match or Tournament game from a hospital bed. I assume McFadden saw a photo of Bobby playing on a pocket set with Tal whilst Tal was in hospital at Curacao 1962.

<"[Tal]... crushed Mr. Botvinnik for the world championship by a score of 12 1/2 to 8 1/2, astounding the chess world. <<<Mr. Botvinnik>>> had held the championship for 12 years in one of the longest reigns in the game's history.">

Totally untrue. That "12 year reign" was interrupted by <Vassily Smyslov>. At the time he lost the Title Match to <Tal> in 1960, <Botvinnik> "had held the championship for 2 years."

He only regained his Title from <Smyslov> in 1958.

Apr-30-11  LIFE Master AJ: I was ... TOTALLY ... blown away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I am so sorry that i missed this earlier.) STUNNED! AWE-STRUCK! MESMERISED! NO WORDS!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmBk...

<<<Just <below the video,> it actualy states:>

<"I made this video for my friend, the <American Chess Master> A.J. Goldsby.">>>

No kidding, girl - I had tears running down my face. The blessing that you have bestowed upon this 53-year-old-man (my two daughters watched it with me) ... I simply do not have the words to (properly) express them.

Thank.you, from the bottom (and top!) of my heart - times one billion! - does not come close ... ... ...

but it will have to do for now.

jessicafischerqueen: <AJ> it's my pleasure- that footage is from one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, "The Gospel According to St. Matthew" by the great Pier Paolo Pasolini.

I suspected you might also enjoy it. I recommend the entire film highly- two and a half hours of power and beauty.

The recording of "Sanctus," written by Gabriel Faure, was arranged and conducted by Philippe Herrewegh, who is best known for his performances and recordings of Bach.

jessicafischerqueen: <FSR> today I emailed you a couple of citations needed for the English language Wikipedia entry on <Mikhail Tal>.

All the documentation for the citations is in the email.

Let me know if the email didn't get through- sometimes on "first run" these emails get shuffled to the "spam box."

Best regards,
JFQ

May-01-11  LIFE Master AJ: Hey baby - just read your emails.

See mine. Can't say it in public ... other than that (maybe) you worry too much.

Take a bubble-bath, light a few scented candles ... and forget about all the silly stuff, OK?

Relax - aj has you covered.

May-01-11  Edwin M: Hey <jess>!

I still meant to thank you for letting me find that wonderfull LIFE mag Fischer shoot. That was quite rare to me. Even rarer photo's can be found in Brady's <Endgame>. But you've probably allready seen them.

jessicafischerqueen: <Edwin M> it's *our* pleasure. It was actually <malthrope> who posted that link for me.

Over half of the links in my Profile were found by fellow members who posted them in my forum.

Please feel free to post any Fischer link you find interesting in my house.

Yes, my copy of <Endgame> came a few weeks ago- my favorite is the photo of Bobby playing chess in the bathtub, with his mother looking in.

May-01-11  fab4: I saw on the net how one bloke stopped a truck carrying 200 dogs destined for the dinner plate in China .. just pullled up his car infront of it...

A stand off..He then used twitter ect.. for reinforcements. Pretty quickly he was not on his own..

They'e using this episode as an example of the power of the net in China.

The dogs I think were bought at the spot. And hopefully now reside in loving homes.. where they belong.

May-01-11  fab4: The journalist stuff re Tal is embarrassing and indeed, surprising.. emanating from such a supposedly august quarter.
