<Tough Love>
When news of Jim Bowie's demise at the Alamo reached his Mother she said "They didn't find any wounds in his back, I'll wager." |

| Dec-26-13 | | technical draw: <<offramp> Season's greetings to you sir.
I will mail you a burrito if you tell me who the "secret admirer" is. Is it <technical draw>?> Wrong. I'm not a secret admirer I'm an open admirer. "Say it loud I admire jessicafischerqueen and I'm proud." Uh, if <offramp> doesn't want the burrito can I have it? |

Usted puede tener los burritos. Nos vemos detrĂ¡s del armadillo en Tijuana cuando el reloj marque la medianoche y podemos hacer el trato. |

Heh... I really doubt Mrs. Bowie ever said that.
On more accurate news, I'm downloading Dick Feyman's comedy routine on the Manhattan Project. Looks promising, thanks! |

| Dec-26-13 | | achieve: Hola Jess - want to wish you a merry christmas evening and all the best for the New Year! My feeling is we need it, and good to see <Bill> landing here again, one of the tight knit core group, like deffi, who will just like Bill keep showing up at the most inopportune - oops - times.... Also greaT to see her back in touch... Warming to see and best wishes to your loved ones as well. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Merry Christmas <Niels>! I didn't know you spoke Spanish. Thanks to the handy GARBLE TRANSLATOR I now speak Spanish too. My own English translation of what I wrote to <TD> is "Burrito tango. I will exchange the armadillo at midnight behind the water pipes in the Finland Station loo." Yes it's wonderful to see <Deffi> and <Bill>, but sad to see them go at the same time. I still think often of <Woody Wood Pusher> who was one of my favorite folks all time. Happy Holidays to you and to your fine new roommate as well! Arriba! |

| Dec-26-13 | | TheFocus: I suddenly have a strong craving for armadillo burritos. Man, I hate getting the munchies! |
|
| Dec-26-13 | | achieve: Well, their comments often come from the heart which is what matters most to me.... Hola / Olaho Ahola and variants I encountered watching a very fine movie called The Descendants, which is a must see, esp with X-mas. Try and DL it - it's with George Clooney, superb cast, super pacing, some very moving scenes. |
|
| Dec-26-13 | | achieve: <Jess> on <WWP> I share your sentiment - I once unloaded a whole bunch of garbage on him at a VERY INOPPORTUNE moment and the memory still sticks and it hurts to this day in fact... But I know he knows. He decided to move on and I think he is a better man for it.... It's not mine to judge, and he can always drop back in, which is something one must consider with care, so I very much understand and respect him, in every conceivable way. |

| Dec-26-13 | | WBP: <Niels> <Jess> Thank you for your kind words. <Niels>I vaguely recall the incident you describe. I sure hope that nothing I said then was construed as critical, unfriendly, or otherwise non-supportive. You've always struck me as a most kind-hearted and clear-sighted soul! I have not really "left" CG, as I told <Jess>. I still look in all the time, try to follow major matches and tournys, love looking at the daily puzzle and so on. And I do dearly miss the jolly wit and antics and mayhem of, as you put it so wonderfully, "the tight knit core group"! Unfortunately, my work and other things have sapped the time I might have otherwise to chat with you all. I have even thought of inviting my old friends <See See> and <Blako> back, to see what they'd make of the old stomping grounds! Best (from this side of the pond),
Bill |

<Jess Say No: I really doubt Mrs. Bowie ever said that.> Oh, ye of little faith.
From Wikipoopia:
<When Bowie's mother was informed of his death, she calmly stated, "I'll wager no wounds were found in his back."> Hopewell (1994), p. 125. |
|
Dec-27-13
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Tim> Not good enough. We know Mrs. Bowie didn't say anything in 1994.
Without a chance to examine <Hopewell's> source, the statement remains dubious. If <Hopewell> lists his sources, that's a good sign. If he doesn't, then whatever he wrote can be considered entertainment only- not history. What you really want here is a contemporaneous source. That's not proof either, but it's a lot better than a Wiki reference to a 1994 book. Urban Legends are ironic and humorous- which is not to say there aren't any ironic or humorous true quotations. Far from it. But the "case of Mrs. Bowie" remains unproven on these pages. So far. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Tim>
Actually, given the "red flags all over the place" phrasing of the quote, the quote itself demands not only a contemporary source but an actual eye witness. Red flags: Passive tense avoids having to identify who, exactly, informed Mrs. Bowie of her son's death. Missing (from the quote, at any rate) is the exact date, location, and circumstances of the breaking of the news to her. The use of the word "calmly," if it's not just a throwaway embellishment, demands that the source was there in order to observe her emotional state. To let a quotation like that pass for history, you need to know who observed her and who heard her say that. That means one of the parties who broke the news to her. |
