<My Good Anteater> Wow you really know your washing machines.

Not only was it a front loader, it was an old fashioned front loader that hasn't been manufactured for at least 50 years.

There is a double roll at the top of the unit where you feed the clothes in between the two rollers...

Horrifyingly, you do the math...

A bit of advice:

You shouldn't allude to a story about someone getting his weiner caught in a washing machine, and then not give us more details!

You can't just leave us hanging like that...

<Hozza>

Thanks for the Spurs stadium video, but it's a dagger to my heart.

Why?

Because it is not only unfinished, the latest news is that it may not even be finished until NEXT SEASON.

It was supposed to be ready for opening day this year.

Spurs spent 0 <zero> pounds sterling on bringing in new players this year. They will spend all their money trying to finish this twatting stadium instead.

That has never happened before in English footy history.

Even the <St. Swithens School for Young Catholic Girls in Trouble> squad brought in a new player this year. She was a steal for 50 pee, too. She's a stout gal from Lancashire who just happens to be the exact shape of a football goal.

This should dramatically increase the number of clean sheets <St. Swithens> garners this year.

Coupled with the fact that <Spurs> have started the season in 5th gear, and that <Serge Aurier> and <Sissoko> gave the ball away at least 500 times on opening day augurs poorly for the club, to say the least.

I predict an unmitigated disaster for <Spurs> this season. I don't think they will be playing in the OOFA! Champions League this year.

They may not even make the EUROPA "Green Grass" league.

"There's a dark cloud gathering over the unfinished stadium..."

Aug-21-18  thegoodanarchist: Autumn is fast approaching. It's my favorite time of the year.

October is my favorite month. The air is cool and crisp. The sky is intensely blue most days.

Here in the Northeastern part of the US the foliage turns spectacular colors.

Holidays approach. There is posh on the frumkins... All in all, a glorious time.

Aug-21-18  Tiggler: Thanks for the low down on <nijesderam>. Can't think why I bothered to ask, though. Here's an idea: limit everyone to five posts per day, but one post on <Rogoff> counts as five.

<Tiggler> I don't like the idea of post quotas, though I understand where you're coming from.

When I am working on chess history in real time with other members, it has not been uncommon to make hundreds of posts on the same day. I don't think this should be limited or it would take even longer to get anything done- and it takes forever to get anything done accurately in chess history as it is.

I think the Rogoff page should be rehabilitated and there should be a dedicated official "politics" forum.

<Daniel> was always dead set against this idea though.

In my view, the best solution all round is to hire someone to actually monitor the site, as opposed to pretend to monitor the site.

As mentioned somewhere recently, I discovered it only takes around 15 minutes to read every new post at cg.com on a given day.

This is easy to do. It's also easy to moderate according to the 5 stated posting rules.

<Daniel> never had the will to do this, largely because of something beautiful and rare in his soul- his entire being was dedicated to "free speech," and just as dedicated to always giving someone "just one more chance."

If I were ever on the wrong end of a prosecution, I would pray long and hard that <Daniel> would be the sitting judge on the case.

Reading this just now well signals the moment that I knew was coming, and hoped against hope wouldn't arrive.

It is the moment that I had to admit to myself, with certainty, that DF's legacy will not live on.

cg.com will be changed, distorted into something he didn't want.

Aug-22-18  Count Wedgemore: <tga: cg.com will be changed, distorted into something he didn't want.>

That definitely seems to be the case. After Daniel Freeman's untimely demise, I've hardly read a single post focusing on the need to preserve this site according to his beliefs and intentions.

Instead, I see the exact opposite. Both on the membership page and on the DF page, I have read post after post with suggestions for changes to the site, changes in long-established policies that the late, great DF surely would not have appreciated: kibitzing restrictions, banning users, etc. So I share <tga>'s dismay.

Yes not a day goes by when I'm doing something or other here and I absent mindedly think "Oh I'll just ask <Daniel>..." and it comes crashing down that I can never do that again.

Aug-22-18  nok: <I have read post after post with suggestions for changes to the site, changes in long-established policies that the late, great DF surely would not have appreciated>

However great, DF's way is not necessarily THE way. CG's code and style are a ball of inertia from the web's early days. Nothing wrong with wanting to improve it.

Aug-22-18  thegoodanarchist: <nok>

Whose improvements shall we implement?

Aug-22-18  nok: There are many helpful suggestions, here's an example. Kibitzer's Café (kibitz #237119)
Aug-22-18  Boomie: People who design web sites would have a truck load of suggestions for improving CG. The main page is way too crowded with links and stuff that should probably not be there. For example, the search functions should have its own page and not be crammed onto the opening page.

There are many ways to improve CG without needing to address DF's wishes or aesthetics.

Aug-22-18  thegoodanarchist: <nok: There are many helpful suggestions, here's an example. Kibitzer's Café (kibitz #237119)>

You missed my point, maybe.

The point is, what you think of as an improvement might be a downgrade to someone else.

Which is how this conversation started:

< jessicafischerqueen: I think the Rogoff page should be rehabilitated and there should be a dedicated official "politics" forum.

<Daniel> was always dead set against this idea though.>

Daniel didn't want to do anything about Rogoff! He was content to leave it as it is.

And I am glad - I like the way it is.

But < jessicafischerqueen> wants to change it. I know others do - <offramp> and <tabanus> come to mind as two members who have openly stated they don't like Rogoff the way it is now.

Do you see my point now, <nok>?

What you see as "helpful" suggestions might be "horrible ideas that will ruin the website" in the minds of others.

This is why DF's legacy will not live on: So many people with influence over the website think nothing of casually making changes to things that Daniel was <dead set against>. They don't want to go slowly, and carefully, with great reverence and respect for what Daniel built, and with a strong reluctance to make even minor changes.

No, they want to straight away start doing things "their way". The fact that Daniel may have been "dead set against" something seems not to matter in the least to anyone, except me.

At least, I haven't seen anyone speak up as frequently, or as strongly, as I have, for preserving the site the way Daniel wanted it.

Aug-22-18  Boomie: <thegoodanarchist: Whose improvements shall we implement?>

The people doing the work will have to decide. Some suggestions might require too much programming to be worth the effort. All we can do is post suggestions on the CG forum.

Aug-22-18  Boomie: <thegoodanarchist: Daniel didn't want to do anything about Rogoff! He was content to leave it as it is.>

The problem I have with Rogoff is it's an insult to Rogoff. He was a very good player and is an avid chess fan today. To trash his forum this way is a disgrace. All I suggested was to move the off topic comments to a Political/Flame War page. Some of us might want to actually discuss Rogoff's chess on his forum.

No need to speak up; luckily the site isn't actually a democracy. His mother and I want to respect his legacy. Just don't see a need to argue about it. People may post suggestions; that's <their> freedom of speech, innit? And we may reserve the right not to follow them - that's <our> freedom of choice. :)

  Annie K.: However, hi <Jess>. ;)
Aug-22-18  nok: What Boomie said. Ignoring user feedback is in any case a bad idea. Some solutions Daniel didn't have the time or hindsight to evaluate; others may have seemed good in the early 00s with 50 users. But a website must evolve to serve the users.

So Daniel was against an off-topic section? What's the big deal. Many modern forums have one.
