Tabanus: <jess> Game Collection: IBM Amsterdam 1973 is an updated version. The hard part (at least for me) remains: finding more sources (eventually) and make the write-up. You promised, remember :)

You can clone it at use the presentation style you want. That is, if you have the time, after the Petrov work. If not, let me know and I may finish it in a distant future!

<Tab> I remember- I doubt I have the sources at hand to give that justice, but I will help you at some point- I have to keep up with <Petrovs> work first though.

Tabanus: <jess> If you read the Bistro, no intro at all may be acceptable. And perhaps even desirable. In which case you are off the hook, and all you have to do is to delete the text (leave the crosstable perhaps) and push the Nominate button. Not for me, but for CG. Take your time.

  jessicafischerqueen:

<Tab> I read that- I don't fully agree. Soon when regular historians are back in action, it's better to at least try to get an intro written and sourced before promoting, because I estimate the number of editors who go back through the <TI> to find unfinished intros to finish to be zero (0).

Something is better than nothing, but still better to try for something more complete than just a list of games.

Tabanus: <jess> When you have the time, perhaps voice your opinion in the Bistro on the matter. I have a feeling (maybe wrongly so) that they are blaming ME for the lack of contributions. I agree that the bio can be short, but I think there should be <something> at least. I don't know how to cut this Gordian knot.

  jessicafischerqueen:

<Tab> hmm there has been some unfortunate timing here. First thing is <Daniel's> death, which was quickly followed by a vicious flame war that spilled over into every public forum, including the <Bistro>.

Second, the honking fight among you and <Ohio> and <z> about the last promotion.

It's not surprising me that there is a worthy collection sitting there with just three votes. Don't worry too much about what <Annie> said in the <Bistro>. Like <Daniel> was, she is eminently reasonable. I really doubt any of it was directed specifically at you. There's no denying her characterization of what's been going on there, or her points. That said, your responses to her are not mutually exclusive to what she said either.

I'm sure we can get this operation going again, with a little patience, time, and listening to each other instead of yelling at each other.

There are merits to both positions- a quick promotion of a collection with an unfinished intro, or a finished intro that has been vetted in the public forum.

I favor the latter, but if the latter becomes untenable then there's no choice but the former eh?

The recent disruption has been very serious. I know of two extremely valuable editors who have left forever, and these are editors who voted regularly for <TI> submissions. Maybe they will come back, but maybe not.

We need to know there is a given number of reliable editors around at any given time sufficient to vote in a <TI> submission.

So I would counsel patience. Just wait till things cool down more, as I'm sure will happen with <Annie> and <Sargon> making good progress now in rehabilitating the entire website. Remember they have taken on a great responsibility for a lot of things apart from just the <Bistro>.

You see, if we wait a bit and people stop yelling at each other in the Bistro, <Chessical> might even come back eh?

Tabanus: Brilliant piece in the Bistro, thanks :)

Yes, I'll try to cool off. I like to write bios my way, and there'll be a few more to come. I know <Daniel> was happy about my bios, only he wanted them shorter. And he wanted more contributors. Yeah, maybe I should be more of an editor, rather than author.

<Tab> You are far too modest man. <Daniel> may have wanted more contributors, but in order for that to happen he'd have had to pay money for their work.

By definition, in a volunteer system you can only take what others are willing to give you. You and a precious few others have given <Daniel> <cg.com>, and posterity so much. You have given your creative work to this website, out of the sheer joy of researching and composing interactive chess history- little tournament books that people can write comments in, and have the comments seen by others. Little tournament books in which people can play through the games on a chess client, and read still further interactive comments on the individual games pages.

The research and creation is what is most crucial. Editing is also important, but editors require something to edit, which is where you and <Chessical> have really been coming in these last few years.

You and many other editors are also willing to help the creators with research and crucial editing skills. Remember how many hours <Ohio> has spent painstakingly re-arranging the grammar to polish the English style of so many <TI> entries, and he has not been alone. Remember how <Miss Scarlett> found the mistake at the last minute in one of the games in the collection <z> created.

Once the creative work is done, and edited by experts, and the new page enters the <TI>, if others wish to go in later with new fresh information and improvements, all the better. This is another advantage of our system of "living tournament books." We can stay current with new scholarship in "living time."

  Tabanus: Yeeeees ma'am :)

Umm, can't you please be the Bistro boss? PB was happy when I/we let him off the hook, and now I'd be happy. Besides, there are >1000 TI events past 2000 in need of editing. I could start on them, the zero (0) effort that you mentioned. I'd be a hero on the Recent Edits Page. Or not.

  jessicafischerqueen:

<Tab> I have to work on <Petrovs> project until it is finished, but I will certainly be looking in the Bistro and voting on <TI> entries as they come up.

I think you are likely already a hero many times over on the Recent Edits Page.

Tabanus: <jess> Yes of course. Mmm, I really mean it: the worst I can do now at my age is to look in a CG forum just before bedtime, get upset and lose my sleep. I've been long enough in the Bistro and could in fact rather start editing the 1000 post-2000 events. They not only lack an intro but are also full of errors. (I. e., many correction slips ...)

Time for a new deal in the Bistro I think. I do have Tilburg 1985 + Linares 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992 to finish, since I'm at it already. Plus perhaps Amsterdam 1973 :)

Sounds good <Tab>. I am certain that the new management will be very happy with your longstanding, and future work on chess history in general, and the <TI> in particular.

They, and we, are lucky to have you.

<Tab> lol I have three (3) outstanding correction slips, and a few outstanding games submissions too.

Do you think cg.com will ever restart the program, or will the lists just grow longer and longer until the entire website sinks into the ocean under the weight of them?

<Tab> lol these crazy Brits... by extraordinary coincidence, that is exactly how we pronounce "pending" in Canadian as well, though, sadly, there is no such thing as "Canadian."

Thanks for listing that recent admin post- encouraging news, eh? Certainly things are looking much brighter than they were a month ago.

Tabanus: He looked so patently patient, lol

I now wonder if they reacted to my word "mourning". It was a joke, thinking of BPs departure the day before, nothing else. Never mind. Yes why not, it looks brighter.

<Editing Colleagues>

If anyone can see problems with this <TI> up for voting- Game Collection: Linares 1988 - please state your suggested improvements, as <Annie> has done already.

<Annie's> edits are now incorporated into the introduction.

This submission seems stalled at 3 votes, so if there are in fact still any cg.com editors who haven't already left the website, please have a look at the submission.

<Tab> I was just reviewing your extensive list of chess periodical archives on your bio page, but I don't see any from <Russia- Soviet- USSR>?

Are any there and I just can't see them?

My googling "abilities" are abysmal...

Aha there are a few online but I found none so far that have any issues from 1937. I am trying to find information about this event here: Game Collection: Leningrad 1937 International Tournament

Tabanus: <jess> Biographer Bistro (kibitz #18916) is the mourning post. BP = as BP in the sentence <Sandy sure did BP it for everyone at the party after she puked in the punch bowl.>

Russian chess periodicals: They're not in the list because I have no idea. I'll study your links there and add - perhaps! I don't understand a bit of it, and could need some help.

Cooler now, thanks.

<Tab> That is very helpful in fact- More information to put in the intro for sure from that <SIBERIA CHESS> page.

Also I have all of the USA Chess Review issues from 1937 in my chess folder. I will look there for more information.

Thank you!!!
