Aug-13-11 | | BishopofBlunder: Bruce Lee was not only a great martial artist, but a damn fine actor as well. That really can't be said for most, if not all, of the other stars of "karate/kung fu" movies (I'm looking at you Chuck Norris). In billiards (9-ball) parlance, Bruce Lee could give Chuck Norris the six. Which is about the chess equivalent of rook-odds or better. I tend to like Jackie Chan despite the crappiness of many of his movies. In order to appreciate him more, I would suggest watching some of his early films, made in Hong Kong, before he became an American sensation. The one I recall the most was called something like "The Fearless Hyena". I haven't seen it since an actor was president, so perhaps my quality standards have been adjusted slightly. But I remember it as a fine martial arts film. JMBO (JMBO = Just My Blunderous Opinion) |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <fab> great video- I ripped and filed it. A great WHO song, and you can really here the debt they owe to the Beatles on this track too. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: heh <Ralph Macchio> is so weak, Karate Kid one of the worst films all time. Was that the real Bruce Lee's voice on the commercial <T-Dawg>? |

Aug-13-11 | | twinlark: <did you remember I'm an afficianado of Ozzie Films?> Absolutely. |

Aug-14-11 | | Travis Bickle: <jessicafischerqueen> No Jess Bruce Lee died along time ago in 1973, just when he was becoming a star in Hollywood. ; ( |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: <chancho> How do we know that was really Jacky? (I have the DVD, hard to get a good look at the face.) |

 | | chancho: Hi <AJ>.
Check full cast and crew for the movie at IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070034... it says: <Jackie Chan thug in prison (uncredited)> |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: <chancho> BUT ... how do you know which one ... is there a clip where Jackie Chan says, "I was the one ..." (whatever)??? |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: By the way, my cpies of "Enter The Dragon" get loaned to friends ... I have had many copies of that movie walk away ... I used to have it on VHS, now on DVD. (Just purchased a new copy a few weeks ago.) |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: As you know, I used to be in the USAF. (My wife is interred at Barrancas - so will I ... but hopefully, not anytime soon.) When I was in the military, M.A. training was required for our whole unit. I entered a few Martial Arts tournaments ... I never had much success. Eventually gave up "the way of the fist" for "The way of the 64 squares." (Did a little better there.) |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: http://www.uschess.org/msa/XtblMain... Two of my good friends - now deceased - played in this tournament. [Russ Chambers and O.L. (Levon) Dunagan.] Levon was a bad alchoholic ... many people do not really remember him in a favorable light. EVERYONE has some good in him. When I was a teenager, I could not go to a tournament. (Family problems / money.) I was very, very, very bitter about it, I had studied for months preparing. I told Levon Dunagan I was going to swear off chess if I could not go to this tournament. (In FWB) He drove over, took me, paid my entry fee, and even bought me lunch. Maybe - if not for this one man's kindness - I would have dropped out of chess years ago. So I tend to remember him very fondly. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <AJ> then you are kind of a "reverse Josh Waitzkin." He gave up chess for martial arts.

 | | LIFE Master AJ: BTW, "you-know-who," e-mailed me the other day.
The only comment I have is that:
A.) USCF has not stripped me of my title. In fact, they have not contacted me at all. (Other than to phone me about an order; I purchased a few books and a couple of roll-up boards about two weeks ago.) B.) I got to block another e-mail address ... this makes about 30 for one person, this must be some kind of record! (Most people get the message when I block one e-mail account.) |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <AJ> yes Chessmaster! I'm quite choked the copy I brought with me to Korea four years ago broke. I loved Josh's tutorials and his comforting voice. I would have loved to meet him too. I also loved Larry Christensen's gravelly voice, what a great commentator of his own games. I don't remember the <Khatena> annotation, but I did watch all of Josh's segments more than a few times. My favorite part was how encouraging he was on his tutorials. He'd say "No, that's not quite right" instead of "Nooo haven't you been paying attention!" Hmmm actually I could improve my current teaching style by using him as a role model on that. Did you know Josh also published a book about "theory of learning"? I haven't read that one yet though. It's hard to find Chessmaster 10th edition, which is the one we're talking about. I've looked for it too.
As for internet safety, you already know how I feel about that. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <chaucho> I applaud your vigor on the Jackie Chan scholarship. Seriously, speaking as a person who pretends to be a chess historian, I think getting the facts and sources straight is crucial. Just today I had to spend over three hours redoing an entire recorded segment that was already edited in to the film, because I discovered I got one of the first names wrong on a chessmaster. I was really tempted to just leave it, because he's totally obscure, and I could just post a correction note on the youtube description. But I would have felt cruddy. Also, I was pleased that I actually did find the guy's real first name today, whilst looking for something else. Ok I saw <Tokyo Drift> and I thought it was a good film, that's Jackie Chan right? Good car chases. |

Thanks for that research <caucho> yes it's <Tokyo Drift> and that's a Korean star, not Jackie as you point out. <AJ> if you think you're the world's biggest geek take a good look around this website, starting with my post right here. | | LIFE Master AJ: A preacher I once knew was always ranting about how bad the Internet was/is ... and with this, it is impossible to disagree, there is much bad stuff (porn/violence/hate groups) on the Internet. However, there is also much good stuff on the Internet, as the two above links show ... also MANY nice pictures of space phenomena courtesy of the Hubble Telescope. http://hubblesite.org/gallery/ |
|
Aug-14-11
 | | LIFE Master AJ: I had a dream the other night. It was weird, it ended up with me just floating in space, I think I had (somehow) become part of the Hubble Telescope. Many psychologists argue (strongly) that you do not dream in color, but this dream had the most vivid colors ... it was like they were all 3D images or something. |
