chancho: Speaking of good stuff, we are supposed to get hit in 2036 by Asteroid Apophis:

(actually, the trajectory has been recalculated)

jessicafischerqueen: <AJ> it's auspicious to dream of going into space, ad astra and all that.

Plus I dream in color, never black and white. Possibly because a color TV raised me.

<Canyonero> seriously if one of those bodies really was going to hit earth, do you think they would try to shoot it apart with a Nuclear missile?

And if so, who would "they" be?

Canada would like to help, but I think we're going to see a move with Belgium in 2036.

Otherwise sure.

jessicafischerqueen: <AJ> speaking of pleasant parts of the Internet, isn't it great to just chat with pals here in almost real time?

That's what I don't like about chess.com.

Takes up to 8 months for somebody to reply to your post.

  LIFE Master AJ: <chancho> http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/200...

Big surprise, I thought I was the only one spending hours (and hours) reading science and stuff.

<jess> I do like the chats with friends, although <lennonfan> needs to find a new hobby.

I have a 2300+ rating (at one-minute/bullet) chess, its either chess.com or chesscube ... I have stopped going to either site ... nothing really bad has happened, just lost interest with the servers.

Like to play chess, although I am addicted to bullet. Not going to renew my membership to ICC (www.chessclub.com) as I feel there are way too many cheaters there. (I lost a game of 3-minute ... a few weeks back ... to a 1200, all of his moves match the book and R3 <Rybka3> perfectly.)

chancho: <Jess> If there's ever an inevitable collision, they'll have to try something.

The question is: will it work?

They are working on the problem, I imagine.

  jessicafischerqueen: <AJ> I recommend FICS.

I've never had a bad experience with a game there. Except for a guy who kept cursing at me in Spanish. <Technical Draw> denies it was him. It better not have been you <chancho>!

Heh well I beat him anyway so she who laff laff laff laff as they say.

<TD> mounted the ingenious defence that if I won the game, it couldn't have been him.

<AJ> also, on FICS you're sure to get a game at longer controls if you like.

I usually set my table for one hour each or 90 minutes each.

I've never failed to get a game.

Plus FICS has a "ding" so you know when someone has sat at your table.

So you can do errands or even work while you are waiting.

<Chauco> yes like trying to hit a whizzing tennis ball by throwing a pebble at it.

At any rate thanks for the warning! I've only got 25 years to get my affairs in order now.

Well it's nice to have a timetable. On the other hand, it's a nice evening here. I think I'll party!

LIFE Master AJ: Can you help me?

Steinitz vs Paulsen, 1870

Tell you a TRUE story that happened OVER 40+ years ago. (I am currently 53.)

I used to have a nice chess set, NOT a staunton one, though. (The pieces all looked like soldiers, the Knight was actually a Knight on a full horse, the Rook looked like an Elephant.)

Originally, I studied on a checkerboard, red and black. However, I took this to chess club and real chess players told me something like: "Oh no! That will never do." Another player showed me a nice board ... green and buff.

I took my checkerboard and painted it with a flat-white (mixed with some gray, some dark green and a little ochre) exterior enamel paint ... it took several layers to cover up the red and black. Now I had an all-buff colored board. I had alread masked off the dark squares. I now cut around the masking and removed the tape. Then I covered the black squares with a very pleasant "valley-green" color mixed with a healthy dab of yellow, some white and some light gray. (This made it close match to the standard colors.)

BTW, a club member was so impressed with my painting job, he A.) Gave me a nice plastic set; and B.) commissioned me to piant several more checkerboards.

I clearly remember studying the above game in a very old chess book, it had the ancient style diagrams ... ... with the above-mentioned chess set ... but I was unable to find it.

Think any of your fans can help out?

jessicafischerqueen: Yes you have to download an interface.

They recommend <babaschess> which is actually associated with the site. When I open my babaschess interface it automatically signs me in to FICS, I don't have to log in manually.

It's a quick, clean download and I really like it.

jessicafischerqueen: <AJ> the best way to get help on something like that is to post it in the <Chess Book Forum> and on <Kibbutzer Kafe>, or in <Paris Attack's> forum or <Wordphumph> forum.

That's where the real chess book fiends hang out.

I only have new books myself.

Go here: http://ficsgames.com/

In the box that says <Player> type your handle, then press the button that says <history>.

All your games will appear on the FICS database...

Aug-14-11  Patriot: Hi <jessicafischerqueen>. It's nice I'm not the only one that feels that way about "co". He comments and no one ever says anything. I don't know if they are trying to be courteous, they don't want to get involved, or they are just ignoring him. Either way, he can be happy wasting his own time posting it and I'll be happy to ignore it...LOL. Thanks for the comments and support.

jessicafischerqueen: <Patriot> well sure, I don't know why you'd feel shy about using the ignore feature for any reason.

This is a message board, kind of like a gigantic chess newspaper.

If you're reading a real newspaper, do you feel guilty about ignoring a few of the articles?
