I'm sorry to say I can't help you with any accurate information about FICS ratings and sign ins and such.

I've had similar problems- it drives me crazy and I have no idea what I'm doing.

I have my Baba Chess client set to sign me in automatically to FICS, and apart from that I no nothing. I don't even know how to speak on the main board.

As for ratings, I also have no idea how they work.

<switching owls for thugs> is an expert on all matters FICS and he could likely answer your questions, if he's in the mood. He gave me an extraordinary amount of patient help about FICS when I first set up my account.

Best luck on that- FICS is great when you're actually playing a game, I find.

jessicafischerqueen: <Hugin> nice to see you! Long time no talk. Yes I do in fact have that fine documentary. The only reason I haven't uploaded it to my documentary youtube account is that it's already on youtube.

I suppose I could add it anyways. Maybe I will.

  jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Bill>!

You mean this channel right?

I'm glad you enjoyed these rare live action clips of historical masters.

I'm always hunting for more too.

jessicafischerqueen: <Thanh Phan> Thanks for all that music- I've harvested all of it and very eclectic and wonderful.

Thanks also for those <Nezh> links- I had in fact seen those, but I encourage you to post anything you want because you never know if I haven't seen it or not.

Aug-28-11  twinlark: <Jess> Thanks for the suggestion. I think the obit was from the New York Times. The link here: http://www.gap-system.org/~history/... has a pic of the obit via a link at the bottom of the article, and simply refers to it as an Obituary from "The Times", which I assume has to be the New York Times. Do you think this is a fair assumption?
Aug-28-11  Travis Bickle: Jess I lost a game of chess a chimpanzee would have won. It's on the kibitzer page. I'm going to shut down my forum and quit chess. Bye, Travis
Aug-29-11  fab4: <Travis Bickle: Jess I lost a game of chess a chimpanzee would have won. It's on the kibitzer page. I'm going to shut down my forum and quit chess. Bye, Travis>

lol .. well my first thoughts are absolute sympathy for Jess here ! Where am I gonna dump all the music I listen to and love now lol !?

My second thought was.. don't go dissing Chimpanzee's regarding chess.. Back off man !

Oh and er.. my third thought was.. I don't know what I'd do without your forum on this site Mr Bickle !

Aug-29-11  fab4: Jess.

Just had a peek at Trav's forum and I thought he was joking but the doors are closed. Is he joking ?! ..

This is silly !.. I can play chess.. I'm not bad at it too. if he wants to discuss his games or play, he only has to put it up in his forum and I will input ect... Have a word .. as they say lol..

I would love to help.

Hey.. 'Love will tear us apart' .. I can have that in my head for a day and can't shake it off..Not that I really want to..Subterranean lovesick blues..

Aug-29-11  Thanh Phan: <Travis Bickle: ...> No give up please!

I even win some times ~ See there are hope!

Maybe my walking into Sisters Ruy Lopez traps time and again lowers my win/lose rate. lol

I try to keep notes and load the games into a computer and learn from the games, try see where I walked into a wall

Then a new game starts and I get excited and forget to look both ways before crossing the Rooks path...

Aug-29-11  crawfb5: <twinlark> No, the Lasker obit wasn't from the NY Times.

1. I searched the NY Times archives and their article was very different.

2. The article reads more like "British English" than "American English." I only saw one spelling variant, with <vigour> used in the last sentence instead of <vigor>.

3. The web page is hosted at a Scottish university.

While I can't verify it absolutely, I'm fairly sure it's from The Times of London, not the NY Times.

Aug-29-11  twinlark: Thanks <crawfb5>.
Aug-29-11  WBP: <Jess> No, actually I meant the Aljechin clip you have right at the top of your bio. But the one you posted above of Rubinstein is very interesting as well. Rubinstein and his opponent appear to be playing a match set up at a bus stop (note the two guys on the right, reading their newspapers and utterly indifferent to the game). All of it great stuff!!! Thanks!

The link I posted is the link to the <youtube channel> itself.

If you go here to the channel:
http://www.youtube.com/user/alecksa...

look to the right- all of those videos are rare chess clips I found and uploaded, including <Aljechin>.

The "channel" is similar to a chessgames "forum."

You can also scroll down a bit, leave me a comment in public in the "comments" box, or send me a private message via the "message" box under my Alexander Koblentz avatar there.

You could also "blow the whistle" if the avatar does not conform to community guidelines.

Luckily, youtube doesn't actually enforce guidelines of any kind at all unless they are copyright violation, most of which they detect by hidden "markers" in MP3 music files.

Please don't sue me.

Aug-30-11  WBP: <Jess> DOH! I shall check it out! But still, many thanks for what you've already posted here! Can't tell you how much I've enjoyed the many clips!
Aug-30-11  playground player: <Jess> Just before my power conked out, I watched your Rossolimo documentary. Spectacular!

Not only did I enjoy it as a work of art and history: it also introduced me to the Rossolimo attack, just what I need against the Sicilian.

Normally I hate to play against the Sicilian, because I find the games repetitive and dull. That's one of the reasons I play 1.b4. I used to play a lot of Wing Gambit against the Sicilian, but I've gotten rusty with the Wing Gambit, so...

In an online tournament I was confronted with the Sicilian, and, unwilling to play the Wing Gambit, I tried a Smith-Morra--and got crushed! I'm not used to getting crushed, and it really cheesed me off.

Somebody recommended something called "the Spiderman attack"--2.Bb5--but after I studied it for a little, it seemed to me to be based mostly on wishful thinking. So I have set myself the task of learning the Rossolimo, so that I don't feel like I have to play 1.b4 every time I'm White.

Aug-30-11  WBP: <Jess> The Life and Times of Mikhail Tal is just gorgeous! Very moving, too. I enjoyed the music very much--think it complemented the montage really well. Great work!

Ok, here's your little endgame "finger exercise" of the day from a game I just finished. I've just played 30...Kf6 to reach the diagram. White then played 31. a4. What should he have played instead and why? What's wrong with 31. a4? How does Black exploit it?

Aug-31-11  hms123: <crawfb5> Nice position. I won't spoil it, but it has a very nice theme in it.

jessicafischerqueen: <Big> it's all about the opposition- White should play <Be4> here, because then Black has no good move.

If black then proceeds to take pxp+ OR BxB, in either order, the White King ends on the 4th rank and Black has no good move, certainly can't make progress, because the White King has the opposition.

In fact if both those exchanges occurred after <Be4>, the Black King would have to move backwards because every possible pawn move would be losing.

<a4?> is no good because then Black can do the pxp+ followed by BxB exchanges and then the White King ends up on the third rank, with Black to move.

Black can then march his King up to PENETRATE whilst enjoying the opposition.

Black should win after

<a4? gxf4+
Kxf4 Bxf3
Kxf3 King PENETRATION>

It's not a "little" exercise nor is it "cute."

Protip:
"Little" and "cute" are not appropriate adjectives for anything to do with chess.

"Agonizing" and "excruciating" are, however, appropriate.

Thanks <Big> I really enjoyed that, took me 45 minutes of staring to figure it out.

It would be humorous, of course, if I've actually got it wrong.

Aug-31-11  hms123: <jess> Excellent analysis. It is good to see you in mid-season form.

Work is a bother.
