The passion for playing chess is one of the most unaccountable in the world. It slaps the theory of natural selection in the face. It is the most absorbing of occupations. The least satisfying of desires. A nameless excrescence upon life. It annihilates a man. You have, let us say, a promising politician, a rising artist that you wish to destroy. Dagger or bomb are archaic and unreliable - but teach him, inoculate him with chess.

-- H.G. Wells

Chess-play is a good and witty exercise of the mind for some kind of men, and fit for such melancholy, Rhasis holds, as are idle, and have extravagant impertinent thoughts, or troubled with cares, nothing better to distract their mind, and alter their meditations; invented (some say) by the general of an army in famine, to keep soldiers from mutiny: but if it proceed from overmuch study, in such case it may do more harm than good; it is a game too troublesome for some men's brains, too full of anxiety, all out as bad as study; besides it is a testy choleric game, and very offensive to him that loseth the mate. William the Conquerer, in his younger years, playing at chess with the Prince of France (Dauphine was not annexed to that crown in those days) losing a mate, knocked the chess-board about his pate, which was a cause afterwards of much enmity between them.

--Burton, The Anatomy of Melancholy

Just because many great chess players were obnoxious jerks, doesn't mean that if you're an obnoxious jerk you're a great chess player.

--AgentRgent

You are also a machine, as are Anand, Carlsen, Kasparov, and Fischer. You and the others are just inferior machines. Your idea of beautiful chess is simply faulty chess that is not caught in its faults.

--vsaluki

Alas, before the post mortem the gods have placed the game.

--Phony Benoni

A chess engine is a great antidote to human optimism.

Thanks! On coup de etat I was actually quoting someone else -- a native Spanish speaker, I think -- from the gameknot messages page. All other errors were mine. "Is delivered" is correct if slightly musty English -- maybe that's why I chose it. I said "is" instead of "has been" because of "ist." Wrong? "Challenges" for "bietet" is just a blunder, obviously.

Nov-02-10  nescio: <"Is delivered" is correct if slightly musty English>

OK. If I had encountered it in a translation job I would have asked the client to explain if it really meant what I thought it meant. I hope you didn't choose it because you think Tarrasch was a little "musty", because he wasn't and still isn't, I think. His German writings are all crystal clear and witty.

<I said "is" instead of "has been" because of "ist." Wrong?>

In this case, yes. It isn't alwasys easy. In this kind of constructions, in general:

German <ist> = English <has been>

German <sind> = English <have been>

English <is> = German <wird>

English <are> = German <werden>

but there are so many excptions that they don't even prove the rule...

V Malakhov vs I Nepomniachtchi, 2010

It is not so dissimilar to the Rossolimo, but the LSB is exchanged, he keeps his DSB (working to exchange it with its counterpart) and white has nice space.

And why is the voice-over sounded nothing like Bugs Bunny?!

And why is the map of Europe look so funny?!

And why does it say Polish Chess, but I see no one cleaning any pieces?!

Enquiring minds want to know!

That's the only reason I can afford him- he works for scale.

Honza Cervenka: Call for Aneta’s voters! Vote early, vote often!

We are losing the race with a great favourite Alex Loukota. Despite of getting in just two days more votes than in both previous one week long rounds the gap between leader and our girl is widening more and more. They are ahead of us for more than one thousand votes now. Your help is much needed! If you want to support Aneta, just click on http://kladensky.denik.cz/miminka/m..., flag the name <Aneta Èervenková> in the grey box on the right side of the screen and hit the <hlasovat> button below. If you see a notification “Dìkujeme za váš hlas” (Thank you for your vote) after that, then you have voted successfully. And if you see a notification “Došlo k opakovanému hlasování” (Repeated voting has occurred), then you should try to vote a bit later again....:-D

I joined Facebook for the first time last week - really - as a means to download digital pictures for our chess newsletter. I definitely don't plan on being sucked in further.

Nice tux. :-)

Feb-08-11  Jim Bartle: Thanks for the note, Scott, though it really wasn't necessary. I should only say that a few months ago, when I had a lot of doubts about the book and I'd posted a web address for a draft of the book, it gave me confidence when you posted that you liked it.

Well, then, I did a good deed! And remember that my daughter, who cannot be accused of partiality or bias, loves it too.

  jessicafischerqueen: Hello!

Thanks for pointing out those two "Steinitz" hoax games.

It's funny I read your initial post on the admin page- twice- and did not notice you had forgotten the word "on."

Funny eh? My brain was anticipating the meaning of the idiom and just "filled in" the missing "on."

Anyways, hope you are well and having a good year.

Best regards to you <keypusher>, and to your efforts to improve both chess history knowledge and our database.

  kamalakanta: Keypusher,

Thanks for the Lasker Collection!

I am a budding Lasker fan. Just got "Emmanuel Lasker, The Life of a Chess Master" in the mail today. The more I read about him, the more I admire him. I have an intuitive feeling that analyzing his games will help my game greatly.....

With best wishes,

Kamalakanta

If you haven't seen this collection by <keypusher>, it's also worth a long look- Game Collection: St. Petersburg 1895-96

It's particularly interesting for the long introduction giving the historical details of this important tournament- <Lasker> vs. <Steinitz>, <Chigorin>, and <Pillsbury> may the best man win.
