The passion for playing chess is one of the most unaccountable in the world. It slaps the theory of natural selection in the face. It is the most absorbing of occupations. The least satisfying of desires. A nameless excrescence upon life. It annihilates a man. You have, let us say, a promising politician, a rising artist that you wish to destroy. Dagger or bomb are archaic and unreliable - but teach him, inoculate him with chess.

-- H.G. Wells

Chess-play is a good and witty exercise of the mind for some kind of men, and fit for such melancholy, Rhasis holds, as are idle, and have extravagant impertinent thoughts, or troubled with cares, nothing better to distract their mind, and alter their meditations; invented (some say) by the general of an army in famine, to keep soldiers from mutiny: but if it proceed from overmuch study, in such case it may do more harm than good; it is a game too troublesome for some men's brains, too full of anxiety, all out as bad as study; besides it is a testy choleric game, and very offensive to him that loseth the mate. William the Conquerer, in his younger years, playing at chess with the Prince of France (Dauphine was not annexed to that crown in those days) losing a mate, knocked the chess-board about his pate, which was a cause afterwards of much enmity between them.

--Burton, The Anatomy of Melancholy

Just because many great chess players were obnoxious jerks, doesn't mean that if you're an obnoxious jerk you're a great chess player.

--AgentRgent

You are also a machine, as are Anand, Carlsen, Kasparov, and Fischer. You and the others are just inferior machines. Your idea of beautiful chess is simply faulty chess that is not caught in its faults.

--vsaluki

Alas, before the post mortem the gods have placed the game.

--Phony Benoni

A chess engine is a great antidote to human optimism.

Jul-24-11  Shams: <2011.05.23> 32.Qd3! finished him nicely.

When to play a2-a4-- in anticipation of ...b7-b5 or in response-- I've not yet learned against the Kan.

Jul-25-11
Premium Chessgames Member
keypusher: <Shams> Unfortunately, 32.Qd3 was an error! The computer reports that the crusher was 32.Nf5 gxf5 33.exf5 leaving the knight hanging and the rook nowhere to hide on the third rank. Play continues 33...Rxf6 34.Bxf6 Nxf6 35.Rdxd6 followed by Rxf6 and White is a rook up. There were a number of mistakes by both sides towards the end. Even 36.Nd8 was wrong -- 36.Qxd6! Rxd6 37.Rxd6 would have been a much better finish.

Also, my maneuvering earlier wasn't so good. I got a sizeable advantage after 18.f5? e5?, but we both missed 18....c4 19.Bxc4 Rxd2. Chess is hard, as Barbie would say.

And I am the last guy to tell you how to play against the Sicilian. My heart sinks when I see it. But I'd rather face the Kan than the Najdorf.

Jul-26-11  noendgame: Thanks for coming to my defense re Lamont on the Fischer page. I thought he might be able to take a little ribbing but I was wrong. If you go back many pages I was a supporter of his wild posts. But he is just a bully.

<OCF> Agree, obviously...

Jul-28-11  technical draw: Yikes! Those are my (losing) games that <Shams> and <keypusher> are analyzing. If I had known the games were going to be reproduced all over the world I would have played better. I guess there's a reason for that 300+ rating advantage.

I don't agree with what you said about yourself there.

If anyone is familiar with your overall posting record, and posting style, and if this "anyone" has a sense of humor, and if this "anyone" possesses even a vestige of self-awareness and some humility, I wouldn't say you *deserve* anything "unpleasant" from anyone.

On the contrary, I think you *deserve* two awards for the sum total of all your posts at CG:

1. An "Accurate Chess History" award.

2. A "Dressing Someone Down in the Bluntest, and often Humorousest, Fashion" award.

keypusher: <chancho> <JFQ> <wannabe> Thanks for dropping by! I was on vacation, and I would like to restrict myself to posting only when I have something to say -- which would mean a lot fewer posts than I have put up in the past. We'll see if I can make that stick.
Sep-19-11  Shams: Just got the Soltis book <Why Lasker Matters> and started to work through it, then found your collection, which is a big help. So, thanks.

And, also, you should post more; waiting until one has something to say is sooooo 19th century.

perfidious: <keypusher> In the late 1990s, I played the Black side of the Kan a little, but 5....Bc5 was under a bit of a cloud then, and 6....Be7 looks odd to me-when the line was played at all, it was always with 6....Ba7.

<noendgame> The irony re <lamont> is that I came under attack when I agreed with him on a point.

As noted, a bully and a blowhard.

Sep-21-11  Calli: <KP> I am not sure that Grace Alekhine's being Jewish was in OMGP, but it is recent "information" that seems to have spread throughout the internet. Your original question remains valid. I have never seen any documentation of this factoid.

  chancho: From OMGP page 451:

<In the spring of 1941 the Germans allowed Alekhine to go to Lisbon, but at two high a price: without his wife and in exchange for a scandalous series of anti-semitic articles <<<Jewish and Aryan Chess,>>> published in France, Holland, and Germany.

To save the life and freedom of Grace, who, according to Alekhine's Swiss son, was an American Jewess, the Champion accepted the conditions of the Nazis: He returned to Prague and began playing in competitions of "The Chess Union of Greater Germany.>
