Sep-03-07 | | Artar1: <kutztown46: Two more questions if I may:> I'm sorry that I didn't get back to you sooner. I have been preoccupied with road bikes. I am thinking about buying one and riding it for leisure. I like to stay active; working out in the gym is fine, but I am looking for something else in addition that is perhaps a little less strenuous but at the same time enjoyable. <1) By getting the starter package, I would receive the <Big> database rather than the <Mega> database. It looks like the only difference is the annotations. Am I right?> Yes, you are correct. I don't know how important the annotations are to you; they're not that important to me. I like to do my own annotations. I hope I don't sound too arrogant by saying that many of the annotations I have seen are not comprehensive enough or deep enough for use in correspondence chess. It takes a long time to analyze a game completely, and some games seem to defy analysis! At any rate, I think I have become a better chess player by doing my own work rather than passively accepting what others have done. On the other hand, having to do a lot of analysis can become tedious. <2) Does the Big database include CC games and if so, can you tell which games are CC? In other words, can you filter on just CC games?> I usually check the game notes to see how the game was played. Generally, I don't use blitz or rapid games because they contain too many mistakes, especially in the endgame, and therefore give spurious results. I also like to use games played by those with ratings of 2500 and above. If I have time I will look at games by lower rated players. You would be better off buying <Tim Harding's Chess Mail CC database>. It has over 800,000 CC games, and it costs only $30. This is the database that <Thorsson> uses. To stay up to date, I am thinking of getting a subscription to ChessBase Magazine on CD and downloading CC games off of the Internet. I hope this helps.
On another topic, I am analyzing 8.b4 to see if it has any merit should Black play a line other than 8...e5. So far I see little advantage for White. I will report in a day or two. |

 | | kutztown46: <zanshin: Email would make it easier for both you and <Tabanus> to keep track of the forum hosts.> Perhaps. I'll keep that in mind. I think we'll be OK as the game progresses and everyone gets into a routine. Part of the problem now is that we established the temporary forums with not much notice after saying that we would start them at move 10. |

 | | kutztown46: <benjinathan: <K> I am struggling to make my forum relevant at this point. Most of the main page is about finding a TN. Not sure what to do.
Your ideas are good, but I wonder if they will work considering the main page discussion.> I think right now everyone is preoccupied with move 8. Once that argument is settled, there's a better chance that your forum can have more relevance. I don't think people are talking about TNs per se, but rather advocating certain 8th moves and exploring lines arising from their chosen moves. Many of these lines include a downstream TN, but the TN itself is not the focus of discussion yet. I will remind the team about your forum but probably not until after our 8th move. |
Sep-03-07 | | benjinathan: <k> that makes sense to me. I will settle down now. |
Sep-12-07 | | Themofro: Hey Kutztown, how's it going?
As for my variation index, I'll probably start either now or within the next few moves or so, depending on how much is posted in the forums. Anyways, I'm going to post on the main forum that people please state whether they are reposting analysis from the main forum, as the way I collect the data is go through the side-forums and then add all the data posted exclusively in the main forum. Last game some were very good with this others weren't, anyways I don't think it will be a big problem, just thought I'd let you know, and maybe if they seem to be having trouble with it just wondering if you'd be willing to make a post or two as well on the subject. Thanks and cheeers! |

 | | Tabanus: <kutz> I have edited the English in the answer in my forum. Not easy for me this :) I just don't like *chief* summarizers. |
Sep-13-07 | | Themofro: <Kutztown> I've just finished checking the side forums and there's been a decent amount of analysis done, enough to probably make a small index of variations. I'll probably have it done by tonight. Also, I was wondering in the future if I should update the index during his move or our move, I'm not sure that it makes much of a difference but what do you think? |
Sep-13-07 | | twinlark: <kutztown46>, <Tabanus> Can I put in my $0.02 worth? There is a fair amount of skill involved in summarising a ream of analysis, and one person would be very hard pushed to do the lot. Have you considered having someone from every forum summing up their line - that by itself is a significant amount of work. Just a thought.
Sep-13-07 | | Themofro: <Kutztown> Just finished posting first index of variations in my forum. It's mostly taken from sideforums and might be missing some from the main forum, but it's still a 4 page word document, so we're starting to really churn out the analysis! |
Sep-13-07
 | | kutztown46: <twinlark>: I'm not sure if you saw my post on the main page before you made your post on my forum. In my wildest dreams, perhaps we could have two people assigned per forum - the host and the summarizer. That would be wonderful, but I don't think there are enough people willing to do it, and as you said, there is a lot of skill involved. |
Sep-13-07
 | | kutztown46: <Themofro>: It might be easiest to update the index AFTER we make our move, because you would not have to include the lines for the moves that were not chosen. Then, depending on how much analysis is posted during his move and how much time you have, you could update again right after he moves. |
Sep-13-07 | | twinlark: Yeah...that was the problem we encountered in the GMAN game, and no doubt one that repeated itself in the second one as well. More people are willing to step forward and host forums, but I know how evanescent this notional support can be on occasion, and just how complex it can get organising forums when people are away or inactive. Finding a group of summarisers is a lot harder than finding someone whose willing to lend their forum. Anyway, if I firm up on a variation in 5 days that no-one else wants to summarise, I may be able to help, but with only one variation - I'll let you know beforehand. BTW - good job you're doing. It's nice to see that the system we started up in the GMAN game is alive and healthy. It can be a bloody lot of work, though, hey? |

Sounds good, I'll do it that way in the future. Cheers! |

 | | kutztown46: <It can be a bloody lot of work, though, hey?> You got that right, <twinlark>. Now it's off to bed. |

Sep-13-07
 | | chancho: <kutztown46:> I'll give the game index a go if you wish, but as far as a large database, sorry I don't have one. Can you give me some suggestions as to how I should arrange the games in my forum header? Thanks. |
Sep-17-07
 | | Tabanus: <kutz> I have added <chancho> to the sticky. But perhaps it is too early yet? He is marked as inactive in your forum header. |
Sep-17-07
 | | kutztown46: <Tabanus>, he confirmed that he will do it but has not done it yet. See posts in his forum (and mine). |
Sep-17-07
 | | Tabanus: <kutz> Ok I chopped him off again. When ready I intend to put him in Arkanin's location if there is no summary. |
Sep-17-07 | | whiteshark: <kutztown46>
Q: Why should <nyap>
host 9.Rd1 Qc7, when he was hosting 8...Qb6, which most of the time transposes ?<Capafan> is, of course, a very fine adress for analysing 9...Qb6 .... |
Sep-17-07
 | | kutztown46: <whiteshark>: Thank you for your comment. I've been paying more attention to making sure the same forum host does not always get the "most likely" move. I have not been considering transpositional possibilities. You make a good point. I'll try to keep that in mind. |
Sep-17-07 | | whiteshark: Thanks <kutztown46>!, I think the 9... Qb6 forum is in bests hands with <Capafan> |
Sep-18-07 | | sentriclecub: Hi, there is that guy who records/publishes the votes of the prominent leaders of our team. It serves a good purpose--to let the voters get a glance of what the general concensus is. I think it would be useful for members of our team to announce what move they believe is strongest for black. Let people "vote" for black's best move, that way it will generate analysis and the team can analyze white's weaknesses from a speculative point of view. I believe that there is already plenty of analysis for black's candidate moves, but would it be useful to let our teammembers post what they believe is black's strongest move? This will give bored members something to do while we're waiting for black-to-move during the 3 day lulls. I have noticed forum activity spikes for 3 days, then wanes for 3 days, etc... I find myself only interested during the 3 days leading to white's move. I have browsed the main page, and there is discourse already of "what black will likely play". Its already here, there is a demand for it--can we officially publish a forum that has the votes of our leaders saying which move they think black will play? Of course, the links to the temporary forums of each black move, would be under the vote-totals, giving people a page to "see who thinks move Qe8 is a good move" and from the same page, they look and then click the link to its respective analysis, and come back to the page, and provide feedback and thoughts. THere are already lots of posts on the main page, but its not centralized, and you have to read all the pages, to sort through it. Let's centralize it, and I'd volunteer if everyone thinks that its a good idea. |
Sep-18-07 | | zanshin: <sentriclecub: Hi, there is that guy who records/publishes the votes of the prominent leaders of our team.> That's kind of what <karpova> does. She publishes the votes of all who have announced them but does not specifically choose 'prominent' leaders. This sidesteps having to designate the leaders are as well as requiring them to announce every vote. Members can decide which voters (if any) they will allow to influence their vote. |
Sep-18-07
 | | kutztown46: <zanshin>: I think you misunderstood <sentriclecub>'s idea. I think the idea is 1) when BLACK is to move, team members can "vote" on what they think is black's best move (or the move the team member most fears), and 2) create a forum to keep track of who "votes" for which black move - and <sentriclecub> is willing to do it. I think it is a very interesting idea. I will make a post on the main page. |
Sep-18-07 | | zanshin: <kutz> Yes, you're right. I misread <sentriclecub>'s suggestion ... probably spent too long playing on Team Black that I forgot we were white here. So I agree, it's an interesting suggestion. |
