kutztown46: <Tabanus>: Thanks, it needed to be done. It took an extra hour to get the alignment right. I did not want to double space because the list was so long. But it is very tricky with this text editor in use to compose a single spaced list of anything without getting the annoying text wrapping effect. Now, because of all the extra underscore characters, when I try to copy the entire list and post it somewhere, it is too large and must be split! So I will not be posting the entire list very often.

Sometime next week I'll post a message on the main page informing them of my updated forum.

Tabanus: <kutz> I have updated the sticky. As usual, I could not resist doing it my way but it's not very far from your list now. I moved the "Dutch Defence Library" to 3rd place and hope that people will contribute with useful internet links.

<I will not be posting the entire list very often.> The temporary forums (+ maybe a few others) should do in most cases. Have you noticed that the main page is wider than the forum page but narrower than the forum header? This will have an effect.

And back to where it was. I'm not sure where to place this and the last move link.

kutztown46: <Tabanus: Have you noticed that the main page is wider than the forum page but narrower than the forum header?>

Oh, yes, indeed. After I did all that work to properly align my single spaced list without wrapping, I tried to copy it to a message in my forum for a test. That's when I discovered a) it would not fit, and b) the alignment was all screwed up for the reason you mentioned. That is why I won't try to copy the whole thing to the main page like I did in the last game.

Aug-27-07  Mac3: Hi kutztown46,

I have put together an opening list based on The Complete Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings, Dutch Defense, A86, A87 - Olomouc 1997; using a word document to set out the numerous variations.

Is there someone I can email this to to be posted to on the net and linked to this game?

Please advise, Thanks

kutztown46: <Mac3>: Thanks for your willingness to help the team.

My first suggestion would be to copy the Word document and try to paste it into the bio section of your profile page. Apparently, even non-premium members can have a bio, although I don't know if you are allowed as much space as premium members are. If this works, once you are satisfied with the formatting, just make a post on the main page informing the team of the info you have posted in your bio section. Team members can click on your name to view the info.

If this does not work for some reason, I suggest you leave a message at <Open Defence>'s forum and work it out with her. Perhaps your Word document can be broken into sections and posted there, or possibly some other way could be worked out.

Aug-27-07  Themofro: Hey Kutztown, hows it going man?

<Mac3> has contacted me about his compilation of theory on the Dutch Defense and we are going to store it in my forum header and email the word doc to those to those wishing to recieve it. Just letting you know this so that you can move my forum into the active thread (YES!!!!!!!!). We're still hammering out the details but once we get it in there we'll post about it in the main forum so people know about it. Maybe if when you post the current forums lists like you do next time if you could just make an aside about it or whatever. Cheers!

Aug-28-07  Arkanin: Hi, Kutztown, I'm sorry I didn't respond to your comment <RE: someone else would like to volunteer to be chief summarizer>. I just hadn't noticed it for some reason -- I've otherwise been quiet but active, just waiting for us to have a somewhat disputed move to start work on a summary.

Regarding your question. I think best would be to get this person on as a partner, as we could then help each other out and correct each other's mistakes. :> This wouldn't be too hard to coordinate as we could split candidate moves.

Either way, I think now would be a good time for me to go ahead and work up a summary. It seems it would be best to talk about candidate moves 6.Nf3 and 6.Nh3 (the moves that are just hopeless minorities don't seem really practical to cover.. but perhaps I could quote <Spock>'s refutations?). So I'll get to work on 6.) over the next couple days.

Aug-28-07  Themofro: <Kutztown> Well I just finished editing and posting all of the index of the Dutch Defense that Mac3 and I have been working on. This is to let you know so that you can maybe make a mention of it next time you post the forum situation and so you can possibly move my forum into the active category. Cheers!
Aug-30-07  Artar1: <kutztown46:>

<I have been disappointed in the performance of Fritz 9 on my new computer.>

By going with Deep Fritz 10, you can expect a 50% increase in speed over Fritz 9.

On my box using the current position, I can reach 20-ply in about an hour or less.

For databases, I use

<Chessbase Opening Encyclopedia 2007>

http://www.wholesalechess.com/store...

<CHESSBASE 9 STARTER PACKAGE FOR PC>

http://www.wholesalechess.com/chess...

This package has a wonderful interface for the Big Database that comes with it (3.5 million games), and it interfaces well with the super-large Chessbase opening book (mentioned above) and with Deep Fritz 10, all at the same time.

<Chessbase Corr Database 2006>

http://www.wholesalechess.com/chess...

<Correspondence Database from Chess Mail>

http://www.chessmail.com/index.html
http://www.chessmail.com/shopcart/c...

(Order this one right away before the offer expires.)

For even greater speed, you will need to swap out your processor and go with Intel's top-of-line Quad Core. Make sure your motherboard will accept the faster CPU.

I hope this helps.

Aug-31-07  Waitaka: <Kutztown>, can you please explain detailed what work is expected, and when, from the hosts of the temporary forums?

kutztown46: <Waitaka>: From my July 21 "Forum system Explained" post:

<Hosts of temporary forums need to keep their forum updated so team members do not get confused when visiting. Another desirable thing is for temporary forum leaders to copy posts pertaining to their move(s) from the main page to their forum. Participating in the actual analysis is optional as is summarizing.>

So once the temporary forums are assigned, as soon as possible change your forum header so it is clear to visitors of your forum what move(s) your forum is devoted to. After that is done, be alert to posts made on the main page which pertain to your move or variation that were not copied to your forum. If you see something, copy it into your forum. Try to keep extraneous posts in your forum to a minimum so those visiting your forum will see an uninterrupted discussion of your move or variation. If you want to contribute analysis to your own forum or to summarize in your forum header, that is extra and up to you.

Aug-31-07  Waitaka: <kutztown46> Thanks.
Aug-31-07  Deep Breath: User: kutztown46

I can't argue with Artar1's suggestions. Convekta's stuff may be cheaper and more powerful at times, but it's ease of use and software bugs leave it lacking. My CA9.0 has a tough learning curve but is quite powerful.

Another idea:
For a quick speed up, might I suggest Zappa, the free version of Zap Chess.

Download
https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/acozzie2/...-

Believe it or not this free software does multi-threaded chess analysis!

Depending on what chess interface software you use, install the UCI engine, go to the engine options (or personalities) for the Zappa engine and increase the "threads" to as many CPU cores your have (2 in your case).

I have this play Rybka 2.3.2a mp on my quad core and it holds its own rather well using 4 threads. It lacks some of the endgame sophistication of Rybka but still draws more than it loses. (The only engine that I have that can say that.)

Aug-31-07  Deep Breath: BTW, the best speed up estimate comes from Rybka's FAQ for 2.2

Switching from a 32 bit to a 64 bit compile (and a 64 bit version of Windows) +60% speed up.

Adding cores
2 Processors: 1.7 (2 is perfect which does not exist.)

4 Processors: 2.8
8 Processors: 4.4

OK, so using two threads or processes (x1.7), switch to 64 bit (x1.6), do both (1.7 x 1.6 = 2.72 times faster.)

Sep-01-07  benjinathan: I am thinking I should switch my forum to Thorsson's:

6...d6 7.0-0 c6 8.d5 e5 9.dxe6 Bxe6 10.b3 Na6 11.Bb2 Qe7 12.Ng5 Nc5 13.Nxe6 Nxe6 14.Qc2!?

11.b4 has played itself out, although I will keep the posts. What do you think?

kutztown46: <benjinathan:> I think you should cover any and all TN ideas. At any given time, you might be discussing several ideas.

It would also be good if maybe a few times a week, you could post on the main page to remind people about your forum, to list what moves are being discussed, and to prod for new ideas.

Thanks for your work on the TN forum!

Tabanus: <kutztown46> I see you have appointed <Waitaka> for 8.Re1 - did you mean 8.Rb1 by any chance? Both are in OE but only 8.Rb1 is listed by RV.
Sep-01-07
Premium Chessgames Member
kutztown46: <Tabanus>: No, I meant Re1. I tried to consider both the <RV> lines but also the moves shown in OE. Re1 is 4th most popular with 33 games. Rb1 is 6th with 22. If we consider all possible moves that show up in <RV>'s list AND all moves that have at least 10 games in OE, there are twelve of them! The ones without a forum are Rb1, Bg5, a4 and Qa4.

Maybe later I'll post another message explaining that, and pointing out that if there are advocates of a move without a forum, they may gladly start one. I was somewhat rushed last night and I wanted to get the forums listed before you went to bed, so I did not go into great detail.

Tabanus: <kutztown46> It's all OK. Far too many moves here.

I suggested a separate 7...Qe8 forum on the main page but nobody has volunteered yet. I could do it! Just this time...?

Sep-01-07
Premium Chessgames Member
kutztown46: <Tabanus>: If you want to host a 7...Qe8 forum, it's OK with me. I did not include it after reading <imag>'s post emphatically saying that GMT will not play it. I think others have said it too, so I skipped that one so we could have one more 7...c6 forum.

Post on the main page once you are set up and I'll add your forum to <Forum Central>.

Tabanus: <kutz> Great, I'll do it within an hour. I don't know how much I'll be able to contribute myself though. Yes <imag> said that - today <whiteshark> said it may still happen because of that book by Kindermann 2005, and the move is indeed played a lot recently.
Sep-02-07  zanshin: <kutztown46: I'm sure a few of the hosts do not yet realize that they have a forum!>

<kutz> Maybe we need a way for you to get in touch with forum hosts immediately? I believe you still have my email address. You might need those of the others. If you assign (say) three temp forums in the future, it would be a shame if one host was away and neither of you could contact the other. Email would make it easier for both you and <Tabanus> to keep track of the forum hosts.

Sep-02-07  benjinathan: <K> I am struggling to make my forum relevant at this point. Most of the main page is about finding a TN. Not sure what to do.

Your ideas are good, but I wonder if they will work considering the main page discussion.
