kutztown46: <YR> I was on the winning team twice and there were prizes. Unfortunately, they were worthless trinkets! The prizes and a dollar might buy you a cup of coffee at some places.

kutztown46: Merry Christmas, everyone. I have been involved on the fringes during this game. While I have voted nearly every move and have read most of the posts, my analysis has consisted only of a few dozen overnight or multi-day Stockfish analyses posted only at the AT. However, last ...

kutztown46: <AK> Doing this type of work is not that time consuming. I set up the position and let it run on the spare computer while I do other things. Then I save the analysis, make the next move, and repeat the process. About 2 minutes suffices per move. The time consuming part was ...

AylerKupp: <kutztown46> I just noticed that Stockfish 2.3 is available. I don't know what difference there is between this version and 2.2.2 but you might want to check it out.

AylerKupp: <kutztown46> It seems that recently one of us is usually following the other in posting analyses in the various forums. Have you tried Stockfish 2.3 yet? I haven't. According to this post by Marco Costalba, Stockfish 2.3 is primarily a bug fix with very minor ELO improvement:

"ELO increase is very limited, it is mainly a minor release to flush the accumulated work. From the user point of view the biggest thing is that SF should not crash anymore even with many threads because a nasty SMP bug causing a rare but repetitive crash has been fixed.

Marco."

But you probably shouldn't bother. Apparently 2.3 fixed some bugs but introduced others. So there is already a Stockfish 2.3.1 available for download. I downloaded it and installed it, but haven't tried it yet.

Nov-22-12  chesstoplay: Happy Thanksgiving to you and your wife!!
Nov-27-12  chesstoplay: Hi < J > ,

You and Stockfish are doing a great job helping the World Team!

I hope you can keep it up until there are no surprises left.

I called GMVA for his birthday as he and my Mom share the same Bday -- her 80th!

I might have a letter printed in an upcoming issue of Chess Life. I'll let you know if and when I see it.

Have you had a chance to look at the copies of Chess Life I gave you this summer?

Also, how is Bridge going for you?

I could not commit as many evenings to it as you do.

I did take a 10 week Police Academy course through our town. It took up to 4 hours every Wednesday night per class. So maybe in the future, I'll try a beginners Bridge site and get destroyed for a while until I start to get it.

Please send me an e-mail with your home address so < J > and I can send you and < D > a Christmas card.

Take care,

Peter

Jan-07-13  chesstoplay: Hi < J > ,

Finally learned the most basic basics of playing Bridge.

I've been playing on Pogo against robots to get a sense of things.

TY for the guidance to get me started!

AylerKupp: Haven't "heard" from you since Feb-16 but I came across this column and I thought that you would find it interesting: http://www.chess.com/article/view/c...

It analyzes a Rybka vs. Nakamura game that is reasonably well known (I was familiar with it, as well as a similar game with knights) but GM Gserper's explanation of Rybka's play (and Nakamura's insight into Rybka's play) I found fascinating; I couldn't have said it better myself. :-) Of course, the only person who really knows whether Nakamura's strategy was accidental or deliberate is Nakamura, and he isn't talking (to my knowledge).

But maybe Stockfish (or the Stockfish developers) took lessons from Nakamura! Or, to put it another way, this may be an intrinsic and faulty behavior on Rybka's part going back to at least 2008 so perhaps I should have followed my first instinct and not accepted your offered draw.

Jun-22-13  chesstoplay: Hi < J > ,

The Kutztown Folk Festival is coming up June 29 - July 7.

However, sadly, we won't be coming to Lancaster this year.

Our youngest took a different teaching job for the summer.

Hope all is well with you and your wife!
