<The next day, two were mysteriously off by one page>

Maybe a post before the marker post being deleted and stuffing up the url reply count.

Oct-20-07  zanshin: I dunno <t>, I just had to change <benjinathan>'s page from 5 to 4. I wonder if someone's changing them just to mess with me.
Oct-20-07  twinlark: <zanshin>

I think it's a good idea linking the markers. If you're worried about it, we can both check the links regularly and correct them as we need to. Even so, we can't go wrong with them linking to the front page of the forum, which is what we've been doing until now anyway.

<kutztown46> I left a message for <RV> on his forum that may interest you.

Oct-20-07  twinlark: <kutztown46>

A suggestion if I may: leave the last four ply of the previous forums instead of three, so that there are two of each for Black and White.

Oct-21-07  twinlark: <kutztown46>

<RV> advises that the top responses by Rybka in the 27 and 28 ply lines for the recapture options are as follows:

<for 13...bxc6, the top responses are 14.c5, 14.Be3, 14.Bd2, and 14.Ng5.

for 13...Bxc6, the top responses are 14.c5, 14.Ng5 and 14.Be3.>

Oct-21-07  sentriclecub: Hi <Kutztown46>

I like how you posted this

<In preparation for the next set of forums and to get myself back into the flow of the game, I ran Fritz 10 to 20-ply after 13...bxc6. Here are the top ten moves:>

The "tracker-directory" will contain this once I setup the data-tree system.

Can I ask for you to volunteer to post this same type of information every move?

Because what I will do is run 19-ply behind every one of those 10 candidate moves and create 10 (but probably closer to 5) candidate moves behind them.

I am going to ask for about 3 volunteers and since you can see its usefulness (as I judge by your post), maybe I could let you help in a way that you already seem to enjoy helping?

I want to roll out the data-tree on Nov 1st (I'm in final-planning stages) and if you can commit to doing "candidate move suggestions" it would be of great value and importance.

Thanks and please consider, you don't have to answer right away.

I do this sort of thing every move as part of my forum preparations anyway. I usually do not post it but it would not be a problem to do so.

As we get deeper into the middle game, I will reduce the number as there will be fewer than ten plausible moves, and Fritz will go deeper in a given amount opf time if I cut down on the number of moves listed.

Oct-22-07  Artar1: <kutztown46: I am running Fritz 10 now and it is definitely faster than Fritz 9. Just now, I am looking at the position after 14. c5 (top three lines) and it reached 20-ply in less than 1-1/2 hours.>

Excellent! I'm glad you are enjoying it! Are you running Deep Fritz 10 or the standard edition? The Deep Fritz version runs 50% faster on a multi-processor machine over the standard edition.

Oct-23-07  twinlark: <kutztown46>

A thought about previous moves. Once they're archived in your bio, it may be worthwhile changing the link to the marker post or first post of the analysis to make it easier for future access, as the analysis will become buried as time passes.

Is it possible to edit a post once it is made, or must it be deleted and reposted?

Also, I'm not sure than anyone will actually be interested at say, move 25 to go back and look at the forums at move 15. Well, maybe to say "I told you so"!

Oct-23-07  zanshin: <kutztown46: <twinlark> Is it possible to edit a post once it is made, or must it be deleted and reposted?>

<kutz> It must be deleted and reposted. I asked CG for an edit capability but they said too many edits would mess up the sequence of posts and would make conversations more difficult to follow.

Btw, any thoughts on the request to remove outdated links from the sticky? Of course anyone can do so, but I'm wary of making such a move unilaterally.

Oct-23-07  twinlark: <kutztown>

What <zanshin> said about edits and reposts.

By going back, I'm only referring to the previous four ply/moves that you're keeping, not every forum we've ever had...For example current analysis extends back a few moves and if someone recalls some early analysis on the lead up to <12...a5>, they can go to you bio and click on <Deep Breath> s forum. If it's linked to a marker, it may save someone a few minutes scrolling back through all the subsequent analysis.

So in short, I'm only talking about linking to the forums that are already in your bio, not to previous forums.

It's not something I see as critical, just a fine tuning process that a few people may find useful.

The only link I would remove from the sticky now is the <KID and Leningrad Dutch Openings> entry. <cornflake> has closed his forum down. <Themofro> has not been heard from in a while, but let's not give up yet on the variations index.

One thing we do need to stop is the use of the sticky for advocating or summarizing moves. <MAJ> did so today. Can you delete it and remind the team to refrain from that practice? We should keep the sticky as clean as possible - links, not commentary.

Oct-24-07  zanshin: <kutz> and <twinlark> It seems that, as feared, we've ruffled <MAJ>'s feathers slightly by deleting his commentary ... I don't think it's a big deal. But just so you both know, I've offered him the role of Sticky Maintenance Engineer if he wants it. I need to make it clear though that this is not some sort of hissy fit. Rather it's in the spirit of cooperation and to show that it's not a control issue. From my past interactions with him, I know the sticky will be in good hands because <MAJ> knows his URLs. I will be happy to act as his backup if he accepts, so we'll see what happens.
Oct-24-07  MostlyAverageJoe: < zanshin: <kutz> and <twinlark> It seems that, as feared, we've ruffled <MAJ>'s feathers slightly by deleting his commentary>

Infinitesimally slightly, no harm done.

<But just so you both know, I've offered him the role of Sticky Maintenance Engineer if he wants it.>

I am honored with the offer to maintain the sticky, but my main CG time is in the evenings, so it does not coincide very well with the desirable time to update the sticky near 12PM EST (which for me is 9AM, usually a time for some meeting at work).

I wouldn't be reliable enough, and thus find myself forced to decline...

Oct-25-07  Artar1: <imag>, <kwgurge>, <ajile>, <whatthefat>,<kutztown46>, and <twinlark>

Greetings,

I have a request to make of you all if it’s agreeable.

Because of my current workload (Yes, I do have a job, and yes rumors of my homelessness have been greatly exaggerated!) and my wish to help my daughter with her college work (Yes, I would like her to leave home one day; the thought of her still living in her room past 30 is unthinkable!), I will have limited time for the remainder of this game.

But if you have a line you would like me to look at and provide objective data (Well, nearly objective; would you believe highly biased and opinionated?), I would be happy to do so. Just leave a message in my forum, and I will get right on it. If I don’t hear from you, that means you got GMT beat so I can completely relax, right?

So let me know what you think. Besides, we do have a decent position, but there is still a lot of chess to be played.

Nov-01-07  sentriclecub: Hey kutztown, from the main forum.

<Judah: Seems like <sentricle>'s data tree would be useful in this situation.>

Maybe you could assign forum's in a data-tree format for this coming move, since it is very important.

The example is section V through VII on my forum.

A forum host should at least have "sections" for a descendant move and a FEN-diagram for visuality.

Only by going deeper than GMT can we expect to find a gem amongst all these seeming draws.

The way your above post is, it leads itself readily to a data-tree format. Waiataka's, deep-breath's, and daibertz's forums all branch from 19b'th move, so why not merge them into a single forum, and reserve the "freed up resources" to host later variations that descend from 19b.

In other words, use the forums for "vertical moves" instead of "horizontal moves". Let each forum be at a different depth, than all the forums at approximately the same depth (which has been more precedant in the past for example).

Nov-01-07  sentriclecub: Also, listing the forums would be best stated as "this person's forum branches from waitaka's forum--see waitaka's forum for specifics"

This will consolidate and make people navigate down the whole path, so to speak.

I have 4 1.8Ghz idle computers that are loaded with Rybka 2.3, that I don't use because I don't think the forum system is organized well enough to have my contributions worth any value to the team. (my 4 slow comps are great for analyzing 1x4x4 slidings of positions near the end of a variation where depth need not be 24 or higher).

Nov-01-07  sentriclecub: Also note how I <highlight> alternate depths on my example data-tree-demo.

This helps for clearity, and people can navigate between up to 10-15 Sections and <subsections> as long as its clear and not hard on the eyes. I have taken a course in graphic design for my degree, and have always been assigned the role of "eye quality manager" and could contribute here too, for making "forum eye-quality standards".

I'd even volunteer to "code" everyone's forums for them, and send it to them.

Having only 1 position FEN diagram per forum is being wasteful of our limited resources.

Nov-01-07  krpvksprv: <sentriclecub> I like your idea but I hope it is easy to implement and does not add more burden amongst the forum organizers. However, I see the value of your suggestion.
Nov-01-07  sentriclecub: krpvksprv<I'd even volunteer to "encode" everyone's forums for them and send it to them>
Nov-01-07  twinlark: <sentriclecub>

Could you explain a bit more what you mean by "strength 1" etc and "weakness 1"?

BTW, there are a couple of typos in the notation, eg: dxc6 instead of cxd6, the last few FENs don't correlate with the notation. I know it's a demo, but it's a bit confusing all the same.
