Feb-22-08  arifattar: <kutztown46> Would you like me to use my humble Ruffian for some analysis? It is not in the same league as the Rybkas and Fritzes, but at higher plys it is quite reliable. Have used it before for the Team Black in the famous St. George's game.

Mar-10-08  sentriclecub: Hi kutz, I am coming to you first to see if its a good idea.

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Openin...

I am a volunteer wikipedian and help the sites out. Openings are my favorite part of the game, and from about move 3 to move 10, is where theory is engaged and novelties emerge.

For our next game, I would like permission to have this link in the sticky? The team creates a tremendous amount of learning each time we do a world game (especially the opening) and I hope to store some of that knowledge for the benefit of humanity.

I'd like to host a forum dedicated to "discussion of this opening" and I'd explain on the forum header that whatever people write in my forum, I'll organize it and categorize it onto wikibooks.org and have a fun learning environment.

It will ideally be in use from about the 4th move to the 10th move. Also, it will help the next generation of chess enthusiasts because great content will be free for anyone who searches google and is directed to philanthropic learning websites, like wikipedia.

Knowledge is empowerment, and volunteers like everyday people--you and me and ZeroOne-- have made wikipedia on par with Britannica.

With your approval, I'm sure the ball will roll much easier.

Lastly a puzzle

If a knight is on a 16 square chess board (squares A1 through D4) starting on the square A4, what is the maximum number of squares it can touch upon finally settling on square D4.

Condition: it can't leave the board, it can't touch any square more than once, A4 is touched as soon as the game begins, D4 is touched at the end.

How many out of 16?

I wondered what happened to you. I looked at your wiki page and it looks like the beginnings of a comprehensive openings encyclopedia. It should be very interesting when more fully developed, but it will probably take you a lifetime to do!

I presume you wish to use the team's analysis in future games to augment the encyclopedia and your forum would be a place where team members can contribute more specifically to that effort. I don't see anything wrong with that.

As for where the link should be, perhaps the best place would be from the "library" forum (or from your forum), rather than the sticky. I think we need special dispensation to link to outside web sites from the sticky, but it's no problem to do it from a forum.

As for your puzzle, I enjoy puzzles but I'm so busy I usually don't have much time for them. I did mess around with it for about 15 minutes on my lunch hour and the best I could do was 12 squares out of 16. My guess is that there is a way to get all 16, but I'm not going to spend any more time on it. So what is the answer?

Mar-10-08  sentriclecub: I had to tear myself away from CG until I lost interest in the position.

1. Nb2
2. Nd1 and I think 14 is the most.

I'm 24/7 study-holic, and instead of 30-minute chess breaks every couple hours, I now do stretches and calesthinics. I now only go on my computer after all my work is done for the day. It's a tough sacrifice, because these world-games let a slow chess learner (like myself) hear the rationale of chosing moves while playing a blitz chessgame but in ultra-slow motion.

I've now gotten addicted to a new form of internet chess activity here...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fDV... He is slightly better than me, which makes it just more relevant. Its the video-diary of a guy who went from a noob, to a intermediate in just 8 months.

I like also browsing the opening repertoires of the young GM's, and now enough time has elapsed for me to come back to CG. I actually owe it to that narrow vote a few moves back between f3 and f4, I told myself that if f3 won the vote, that I should use it as an arbitrary incentive to quit for awhile. I was extremeley passive in the yury game, (kept up with the game, always voted, never spoke) so this one is really my first GM game, and I fell in love with it after our Qb3 move. I wanted to fall in love with a novelty in my least favorite opening (1.d4)

Anyways, I'm back, but for my own good, I'm low key, probably won't post on the main page, will cruise and hang out in the forums.

Mar-12-08  zanshin: <kutz> I saw your note to <RV> asking for analysis ont he position after the expected 36.g4. Fwiw, here are results of my runs:
