"Play the board AND the man ! ".
But mostly the board.
Was born in Elsinore,Denmark,1953.And I am still proud of it.As I hope everyone is proud of hers/his startingpoint.

In many aspects life and chess do mirror each other IM experience. As science and belief goes hand in hand.So many "rules of thumbs" and many "exceptions" from the rule. I do agree with Bent Larsen who once said that someone who cannot contain a paradoxe is not using the full capacity of his brain.Actually I am convinced that there are no parodoxes, but perspectives which are more bright or flexible than others...

Though some obviously are borned under more easygoing circumstances than others,I will second our esteemed fellowkibitzer <zarg> who underlines that "luck" is also somehing that we create ourselves. Ourselves, but also together IM experience.
I try to live my life as if Jesus or Buddha knocked on the door , I would wellcome them as friends . And if they didn´t show up, it would be fine anyway.

Jun-16-12  Memethecat: <Hi´<Memethecat> Nice to see you stopping by and joining the clubs of "the perhaps grown ups" ;)Hope I didn´t sound too patronising> Hi <moro> (did you know 'moro' is used by the Spanish for the Moors or Moroccans?) I didn't feel patronized, so all is good there, but if I knew you were 'grown ups' I would never have come, however you said 'perhaps grown ups' that's much better, hah.

Once an adult losses the ability to be childlike the game is over, especially men, who are in some ways boys their whole life, this is a good thing I believe & a part of ourselves that should be embraced, not ashamed of.

I think you have a philosopher & a poet inside you (it must be very cramped) & I have been enjoying the posts between you, achieve & branko.

Thanks for welcoming me to your forum.

  moronovich: Hi´<Memethecat> !

I know about somtehing called approximately "maur a la playa" meaning something is rotten(not in the state of DK ;)something is wrong, originated from the ancient times when the spanish were under attack from the maurs(dont know the exact spelling, but I suppose you know). My handle is a tribute to my son who
made it up.He got a braindamage almost 6 years ago and Moro was our favouriteplayer. We both liked Spain very much and he even lived there for a couple of years. And he would definately approve the thing about keeping in touch with the inner boy.Perhaps the only true maturity sign IMO.

I see you study chess !?
And by coincidence ? I looked at "Test
Your Chess I.Q." by Larry Evans (Cardozo Publishing) and thought of you yesterday.Do you know it ? It is very good and easy to approach. Not to light and no to heavy. 100 diagrams/positions from practical
play. Each diagram is given 3 possible solutions. And there we go !

I am glad you like the forum and now you have given your big share too. Enjoy the weekend, the Tal Memorial included, not to forget the EM in football :)

I'm very sorry to hear about Your son. I had wondered about the origin of Your "user-name", and now it indeed appears to be a fitting tribute to Your son.

I whole-heartedly agree!

  moronovich: Thanks <brankat> !

And I suspect these gamblingenergies to be part of feeling like a young kid again..!?

The key for today at pick-3 must be a Carlsenwin and then the rest is up to imagination and other thing as well..
Right now the odds are very high if we
go White, Ca/Kr doesn´t draw, anything in the Grischuk game Could be the best by in town--right now.But the odds may change which often is the hardest part IMO.

So good luck dear cat.

while we are wating for D-day.

Djermans,Danes,Dutchs.10 hours from now :)

moronovich: Hi again <brankat> Mys son is no worse than he is funtcioning OK/well according to circumstances.E.g. We meet every wednesday and play chess for 3-4 hours. He has gone from 2000 to 1600.So I have to slow down which I usually does.
Jun-17-12  brankat: <moro> Then it is good, all good. I was afraid it was worse...much worse.
Jun-17-12  brankat: Carlsen will certainly try to win. But it seems to be harder and harder at this level. He is some 100 points higher rated than the opponent. But then again, Tomashevsky is currently at 2738. He did beat Morozevich, Kramnik was not supposed to lose to McShane. The truth is, I think, that any of these players can beat any other one on a given day.

Yet, the bets still need to be narrowed down somehow, with some sort of a "Key-result" which one decides to depend on.

The problem with keying Magnus is that the odds are usually low, especially if You spread the wagers to cover a few combinations, which I always do.

For today I took a total of 12 combinations, different amounts of c-bucks, all-together for 292 dollars. I do have 4 combos, out of twelve, where Tomashevsky does better than losing. Some of the odds are almost astronomical :-)

Best of luck!

Also, best of luck against the Djermans!

I'm so sorry to hear your son has experienced the problems that he's encountered, and even as a father of three, I can only begin to imagine how you must have felt.

I must also express my admiration at how you deal with the situation, and give your son all the love he needs to make the most of what he has. Someone who is loved has something incredibly important that someone who isn't hasn't, no matter how smart they are - a sense of belonging and being part of something wonderful.

My very best to you and yours.

<twinlark>

Thank you very much for your warmth and comforting words. It really means something to me.And it is allways good that you are around here at CG and let us not underestimate the value of a cyberspacetoast as we now can share !...

And I am glad to hear you are the supposedly proud father of three kids. How old are they,if I may ask !? Comforting and lifeassuring to realize that life goes on..

Well,J and me had 30 wonderful years
were we did more or less all the stuff together that I didn´t have the opportunity with my own father.

See you around and all my best to you
and yours as well.

<How old are they,if I may ask !? Comforting and lifeassuring to realize that life goes on..>

I've three grown up kids, aged between 18 and 29 and thankfully they're all in reasonably good health and have had no serious accidents. May that always remain the case.

All the best to you and your son, and may you enjoy each other's company for many more years.

Jun-18-12  Bureaucrat: <moronovich> I just read your post about your son's problem. I am so sorry to hear that. My condolences to you and your family.

Anyway, thanks for many pleasant chats on the balcony. Having such a nice dad won't cure your son, but it will surely make him feel better :-). Take care, old friend.

Jun-18-12  brankat: Too bad about Denmark losing to Germany. But, it was a good try. If it is any consolation, then the Dutch did considerably worse :-)
Jun-18-12  achieve: Well - if you're out, you're out - but since this is the worst result in about half a century, yes, 0/9 is a rather sad score.

Yesterday vs Portugal, like previous games, the first 20 mins were energetic, and pretty good even, but the lack of cohesion and closer interplay was quite shocking, to tell you the truth. The pure basics, requirements for teamplay and compact movement, weren't met, and this time the price was payed, and deservedly Denmark had a good chance to get to the QF - they played better football then Holland, while their squad contained the - certainly measured by salary - were by far the most "lightweight".

Jun-18-12  achieve: <moronovich> I wanted to add a few words in addition to previously worded warm sentiments and encouragement, but could not find the words without feeling awkward; in other words, I wholeheartedly second the words of Love, support, optimism and closeness, and by sharing it and passing it on it will spread wider and wider; the world needs this counterweight, badly, as too on a small scale we need it, our children, our pets, our elderly...

My dad is in a poor state, in an elderly home, really it seems a humiliating struggle he is going through there, but Saturday I visited him and he could not react anymore to the simplest questions, I was shattered at first, but now realize that I can still hold him, rub his hand, hold it, and at least the warmth he will "feel", and no words need be spoken from now on between us, he is too tired, and doesn't register sentences anymore... But the physical and soul connection is still there, and at age 76 his time to truly rest in peace may arrive now, to me rather sooner than later, but the contrary emotions and reality are quite tough to handle... Thanks for turning out to be a sort of older brother, like Branko, with whom it's possible to share on this level, because in turn we lift each other up, that's the beauty of it all.

That is very good to hear. And may you always stay healthy and I will indeed enjoy the company of my son and wish you could be a fly on the wall when we play a game of chess.Loosing by purpose, sometimes,is a discipline which is not on the map :)

moronovich: <brankat: Too bad about Denmark losing to Germany. But, it was a good try. If it is any consolation, then the Dutch did considerably worse :-)>

I am fine with the danes are out,as we didn´t have close to championpotential anyway..but OTOH made a fine performance compared to our limited resources. And no consolation in the dutch deroute either. But I hope you are on terms with it <achieve> as I will respond later to you.

Right now Tal-Memorial is heading for.....yeah,almost anything could happen.

See you guys around.

Jun-19-12  achieve: Carlsen won it, just a bit of extra gas, and vrrrooom, Caruana and McShane reduced to spectator status.

But really, an unMagnuslike minimalist performance.

<moro> - as I said earlier I am more than fine with the Dutch being out, because I had no emotional stake nor investment in it, hardly, which was a great help really as I have more important stuff to deal with, and to expand on that I really look forward to watching the remaining games play out to interesting QF/SF matchups;

Por - Cze
Ger - Gre
Spain - Eng/Fra
Italy - Eng/Fra

Germany favourite in the top half but Greece has a Big Heart, enormous fighting spirit.

Jun-19-12  Memethecat: Hi <moro>, are you enjoying the summer in Denmark? its been very wet here in the UK, but looks like it could be sunny today, hurrah.

Its my first visit here since my last post, of course its sad to hear of your sons condition, but if he's still playing at 1600 he could certainly give me a good game. Also he is very lucky to have 'you', many father & son relationships are so poor, & it sounds like you spend regular time together.

I've watched many of Larry Evans videos on ICC, the series is called 'storming the barricades' a lot of it is aimed at attacking play. His book sounds like the type I would enjoy, I have a backlog of chess books I want to read & an even bigger backlog of chess books I will never read, I started collecting them last year, & now my friends also buy second hand chess books for me whenever they see them, most recently 'the black knights tango' which is page after page of notation, I cant read this type of manual, but enjoy having them, is this strange?.

I've never heard "maur a la playa" or "moro a la playa", literally its 'moor to the beach', unfortunately it might be derogatory or racist towards Moroccans, such is the history between the two country's. The Moors ruled Spain or 'Al Andalus' as it was known, for about a 1000yrs, after they were usurped in the 15th century the inquisition instilled a deep rooted bigotry for anything non-christian. Even today the country folk in Spain make a big deal about slaughtering a pig every year, some authors have speculated that this is a throwback to a time when they wanted the inquisitors to see, true or false, that they were not Muslims or Jews.

I'm very interested about the history of this part of the world, during the so called 'dark ages' Spain was a place were Jew, Christian & Muslim lived together & exchanged knowledge from all cultures & specifically were many cutting edge ideas from the Muslim world passed into Europe.

Anyway, I'm probably telling you many things you already know, please excuse my ranting.

  moronovich: Good noon <achieve> !

Just comming home to lunch after a short visit to the dentist.Just a minor hole and no root chanal ;)Bus as a true dutch you may have easier acces to the chanals :)(that was a cheapo)...

Sorry to hear about your dads condition. But it may be of great comfort that you are in touch with him.

In a way life is so strange and it certainly works in mysterious ways ,at least on some levels..

I sincerly hope you both will find the most peacefull road and ending.

When my day comes I think I would prefer an exit a la the one Doctor Ziwago had.

It seems fine that you, like me,are not emotionally attached to the nationalist teams performance...

So let us celebrate what is left and not worry to much of what cannot be changed.

One day many times ago in a town in Holland I saw a road sign saying "Unter den Linden.Which to this very day stays within as a beautiful flash of energy :)

Take care old buddie and see you around !

Jun-19-12  achieve: Unter den Linden is German ;)

Think I can safely say that I am no longer burdened by nationalistic sentiments or tribal urges, though 2 years ago with the WCup in south Africa I at some point felt the enormous power the "our team" must win attitude still can exert.

Not this year though, and it saved me a lot of energy, so I'm glad for that. I watched pretty much as an almost neutral observer.

Enjoy your lunch, moronovich, and see you around, and thanks for the kind words, thoughts.
