Behold the fiery disk of Ra!

Started with tournaments right after the first Fischer-Spassky set-to, but have long since given up active play in favour of poker.

In my chess playing days, one of the most memorable moments was playing fourth board on the team that won the National High School championship at Cleveland, 1977. Another which stands out was having the pleasure of playing a series of rapid games with Mikhail Tal on his first visit to the USA in 1988. Even after facing a number of titled players, including Teimour Radjabov when he first became a GM (he still gave me a beating), these are things which I'll not forget.

Fischer at his zenith was the greatest of all champions for me, but has never been one of my favourite players. In that number may be included Emanuel Lasker, Bronstein, Korchnoi, Larsen, Speelman, Romanishin, Nakamura and Carlsen, all of whom have displayed outstanding fighting qualities.

Besides sitting across the board from Tal, I have a Lasker number of three and twos for world champions from Capablanca through Carlsen.

  perfidious: <Fusilli: Too much poker?>

These days, not enough--have not played at all since the onset of the pandemic. Tough to keep the dough rolling in when on the sidelines, but them's the breaks.

<theagenbiteofinwit: You strictly a tournament player?>

Actually, no; I do not play tourneys other than during my annual visit to the WSOP. I stick to cash.

<perfidious> regarding your post here: St. Louis Rapid & Blitz (2020) (kibitz #89)

The link you provide does not go directly to the post you refer to eh? That post is one page after where your link goes: Biographer Bistro

Here are the links that go directly to the posts/conversation in question, unless I'm mistaken:

Tell that to the many who spend the last days of their lives lonely and isolated after contracting this horror.

Good grief, is there no end to infamy?

  perfidious: <"This is a flu. This is like a flu." "It's a little like the regular flu that we have flu shots for. And we'll essentially have a flu shot for this in a fairly quick manner.">

<"We're going very substantially down, not up, when you have 15 people and the 15 within a couple days is going to be down to close to zero, that's a pretty good job we've done.">

<"One day -- it’s like a miracle -- it will disappear. And from our shores, we -- you know, it could get worse before it gets better. It could maybe go away. We’ll see what happens. Nobody really knows.">

  perfidious: <.... "The police are under siege because of things -- they can do 10,000 great acts, which is what they do, and one bad apple, or a choker -- you know a choker, they choke -- shooting the guy in the back many times. Couldn't you have done something different? Couldn't you have wrestled him? In the meantime, he might've been going for a weapon. And there's a whole big thing there. But they choke. Just like in a golf tournament, they miss a three-foot...

"People choke. And people are bad people. You have both. You have some bad people, and they choke.">

Rather a bizarre analogy; the death of a man in police custody is thus equated to a game of golf.
