Behold the fiery disk of Ra!

Started with tournaments right after the first Fischer-Spassky set-to, but have long since given up active play in favour of poker.

In my chess playing days, one of the most memorable moments was playing fourth board on the team that won the National High School championship at Cleveland, 1977. Another which stands out was having the pleasure of playing a series of rapid games with Mikhail Tal on his first visit to the USA in 1988. Even after facing a number of titled players, including Teimour Radjabov when he first became a GM (he still gave me a beating), these are things which I'll not forget.

Fischer at his zenith was the greatest of all champions for me, but has never been one of my favourite players. In that number may be included Emanuel Lasker, Bronstein, Korchnoi, Larsen, Speelman, Romanishin, Nakamura and Carlsen, all of whom have displayed outstanding fighting qualities.

perfidious: Loser Lake hard at it again:

<Arizona Senate hopeful Kari Lake said that no one is safe from the "tyrannical" government while discussing cases involving herself and other Republican figures.

Lake, a 2020 election denier who falsely claimed her 2022 gubernatorial loss to Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs was due to voting irregularities, made the claim on social media while sharing a post from Blaze reporter Steve Baker, who announced he is due to be charged by the Department of Justice over his reporting on the January 6 attack, without specifying further.

Newsweek has contacted the Department of Justice for comment via their website.

In rhetoric similar to that of former President Donald Trump, a Lake supporter who frequently claims the criminal investigations into him are politically motivated "witch hunts", the Arizona Republican suggested that the federal government and other agencies are purposely targeting GOP figures. Lake also made reference to how her lawyers who worked on her baseless election fraud lawsuits, which were frequently dismissed by the courts due to lack of evidence, may be disciplined over the "frivolous" legal arguments.

"They are coming after my attorneys for having the courage to represent We the People in election challenges. The politicized Bar Association is trying to take away their law licenses," Lake posted on X, formerly Twitter.

"They are suing me for having the courage to speak out about election fraud and maladministration. They are indicting and persecuting President Trump. They are imprisoning journalists.

"You are next. No one is safe with this tyrannical government," she added.

Lake has been contacted for further comment via email.

The Attorney Discipline Probable Cause Committee recently gave the green light for the State Bar of Arizona to move forward with their disciplinary action against Andrew Parker, Bryan Blehm, and Kurt Olsen, who represented Lake in her lawsuits trying to throw out the 2022 gubernatorial election results.

Olsen and Blehm have already been sanctioned by the Arizona Supreme Court for making "false claims" that 35,000 ballots were illegally inserted into batches of legal ballots in Maricopa County just as the votes in the November 2022 election were due to be counted. Blehm faces an additional complaint over a post he made on X in August claiming the Central Intelligence Agency and Department of Justice forced the Arizona Supreme Court to "create misinformation boards" in the run up to the 2020 election to prevent lawsuits challenging the results correctly saying Trump lost to Joe Biden.

The Attorney Discipline Probable Cause Committee has now ruled there is probable cause to take formal action against Blehm and Olsen over their false claims. Parker also faces repercussions after he represented former secretary of state candidate Mark Finchem in a 2022 lawsuit which challenged the use of electronic machines counting ballots used in both last year's midterm races in Arizona, which was also thrown out.

Blehm and Parker face a reprimand, suspension for up to five years or disbarment, reported the Arizona Mirror, with Olsen's maximum punishment being a reprimand.

Newsweek contacted Blehm, Olsen and Parker for comment on the case on Wednesday but received no reply.

Lake's remarks were in response to Baker, a reporter for conservative news site The Blaze, saying he will be charged for his coverage of the Capitol riot.

"My attorney has just been notified by @FBI that I am going to be charged by @TheJusticeDept for my journalistic efforts on #Jan6," Baker posted. "I have to self-surrender on Tuesday. Charges are yet unknown."

Blaze Media's editor in chief, Matthew Peterson, hit out at the apparent charges as an "outrageous retaliation" on the part of the federal government against a journalist.

"[Baker] was an independent journalist on J6; he's now investigating the events of that day for The Blaze," Peterson posted. "We must all rally and end this totalitarian madness.">

perfidious: Stefanik the Shrew going after another judge:

<Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., filed a complaint Friday alleging judicial misconduct by a federal judge who has overseen various Jan. 6-related cases.

Stefanik, a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump and member of House GOP leadership, formally requested an ethics investigation into U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell over what the New York Republican called a “highly inappropriate political speech” by the judge in November.

The complaint, submitted to D.C. Court of Appeals Chief Judge Sri Srinivasan and first shared with NBC News, pertains to Howell's remarks on Nov. 27 when she accepted an award at a Women’s White Collar Defense Association gala. Stefanik argues that Howell's remarks were "hardly apolitical" and that the judge's remarks were "plainly inappropriate, consisting of partisan statements, election interference, and improper extrajudicial statements while criminal cases are pending."

A spokesperson for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia did not immediately return NBC News' request for comment.

Howell’s acceptance speech focused on the cruciality of facts and cited the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

“My D.C. judicial colleagues and I regularly see the impact of big lies at the sentencing of hundreds, hundreds of individuals who have been convicted for offense conduct on January 6, 2021, when they disrupted the certification of the 2020 presidential election at the U.S. Capitol,” Howell said in her speech. “As district court judges, we are all about the facts.”

More than 1,200 people have been charged in connection with Jan. 6, with 700-plus so far pleading guilty to federal charges, according to the Department of Justice.

Stefanik pointed to Howell's reference to a passage in a book by Heather Cox Richardson, author of "Democracy Awakening," that said the U.S. was "at a crossroads, teetering on the brink of authoritarianism" as evidence that the judge's speech veered into politicization.

She argued that Howell "promoted the Democrat political campaign theme that the re-election of Donald Trump equates to America choosing authoritarianism."

Howell did not mention Trump or Republicans by name but alluded to the former president, including while remarking on the storming of the Capitol on Jan. 6.

In a statement, Stefanik said Howell's speech “insinuated the election of President Trump will lead to fascism in America."

"I filed a judicial misconduct complaint against Judge Howell, because election interference by judges destroys public confidence in the federal judiciary, tears apart the fabric of our Republic, and is illegal. It must end now,” Stefanik said.

Howell, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama, has previously issued decisions against Jan. 6 defendants and rejected arguments made by Trump lawyers. She also supervised the grand jury for the Mueller probe, as well as special counsel Jack Smith’s indictment of Trump.

She served as chief judge for a seven-year term. The position of chief judge is now held by James Boasberg.

Stefanik also pointed to Howell's remarks about Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, another award recipient at last month's event. Monaco oversees all all Jan. 6 cases.

"I’ve been in awe of how you remain a model of calm and grace when carrying enormous responsibility for the safety of so many," Howell said of Monaco in her acceptance speech. "Not just in your current job, but in your prior national security role."

This isn't the first time Stefanik has filed an ethics complaint against a judge who has dealt with cases involving the former president. In November, she filed a judicial ethics complaint against Judge Arthur Engoron, who is presiding over the $250 million civil fraud case against Trump, arguing he had engaged in "clear judicial bias" against the former president and that he should recuse himself from the case.>

perfidious: Are things in Comer's house not quite on the up and up, all while going after the 'Biden crime family'?

<James Comer has been panned over reports the Republican owns a shell company.

Comer is the chair of the House Oversights Committee and has been leading an informal impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden over allegations the president intervened and benefited from his son Hunter Biden's business dealings with China and Ukraine while the elder Biden was vice president under Barack Obama, including accusations of taking bribes. The allegations have been denied by the White House and Hunter Biden's lawyers, with Democrats criticizing the GOP's impeachment inquiries for failing to find any meaningful evidence against the president.

This week, the House voted to formalize the inquiry, which has also centered on the alleged use of shell companies, companies that normally only exist on paper and are formed to hold assets. Last month, the House Oversight Committee said it had obtained financial records showing Biden family members allegedly set up more than 20 shell companies during Biden's vice presidency in order to hide payments received from overseas.

However according to multiple reports, in 2017 Comer, a multimillionaire farmer, transferred his ownership of 6 acres of land in Kentucky, which he bought in 2015 and co-owns with a campaign donor, to a shell company called Farm Team Properties he co-owns with his wife. Comer has denied wrongdoing in establishing a shell company.

Newsweek has contacted representatives for Comer by email to comment on this story.

Speaking on Fox News yesterday, Comer said Farm Team Properties "has five different assets and lots of revenue."

But writing on X, formerly Twitter, commentators criticized the Republican, with one calling him "a hypocrite."

California Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell said Comer had "shady finances."

Mary Trump, Donald Trump's estranged niece and critic, said the reports were "unbelievable" and called Comer "a hypocrite."

She added: "James Comer, who is pushing the sham Biden impeachment, allegedly made the same kind of business deal he's accusing Hunter Biden of having made."

Alexander Vindman, the former U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and whistleblower whose testimony led to Trump's first impeachment, said Comer had "set a precedent for his wife to be investigated for these allegation."

"Any future key leader's family will be fair-game for politically motivated investigations as a result of Comer's witch-hunt," he added.

Democrat supporter Jack Hopkins wrote: "James Comer is a bigger crook than we thought."

Meanwhile, responding to his impeachment inquiry, Biden called Republican impeachment plans "baseless."

In a statement from the White House, he said: "Instead of doing their job on the urgent work that needs to be done, they are choosing to waste time on this baseless political stunt that even Republicans in Congress admit is not supported by facts."

"There is a lot of work to be done," he added. "But after wasting weeks trying to find a new Speaker of the House and having to expel their own members, Republicans in Congress are leaving for a month without doing anything to address these pressing challenges.">

perfidious: Meadows and other henchmen in Fulton County employ standard defence manoeuvre:

<The county judge overseeing former President Trump’s RICO case in Georgia has granted motions beneficial to several defendants, including Mark Meadows, allowing them to delay pretrial motions from Jan. 8 to Feb. 5.

Meadows is appealing to transfer his case to federal court, aiming for a more favorable jury pool and to prevent live-streaming of proceedings.

Georgia Republicans are seeking to discipline or remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis for prosecuting Trump and others, with the state Supreme Court declining to approve rules for a new commission to discipline and remove state prosecutors.

According to the Washington Examiner, “Meadows is seeking to overturn a September ruling by U.S. District Judge Steve Jones that found the former chief of staff exceeded his role by working directly with Trump’s campaign over the former president’s bid to undo his loss to President Joe Biden in the Peach State.” This has sparked discussions about bypassing the court’s approval to allow the commission to begin operations.

Georgia’s state Supreme Court justices wrote in an unsigned letter, “If district attorneys exercise judicial power, our regulation of the exercise of that power may well be within our inherent power as the head of the Judicial Branch.”

Adding, “But if district attorneys exercise only executive power, our regulation of the exercise of that power would likely be beyond the scope of our judicial power.”

Houston Gaines, a Republican state representative contended, “This commission has been years in the making, and now it has its appointees, rules, and regulations ready to go.”

“As soon as the legislature can address this final issue with the court, rogue prosecutors will be held accountable,” promised the lawmaker.>

perfidious: Red Chinese subverting USA yet again:

<Reports from the Washington Post and Fox News have revealed a year-long large-scale infiltration of American infrastructure and critical services by Chinese hackers.

The attack, known as “Volt Typhoon,” is part of a broader effort to sow panic and chaos in the event of a U.S.-China conflict in the Pacific.

Targets included a water utility in Hawaii, a West Coast port, oil and natural gas pipelines, and the independent power grid of Texas.

Brandon Wales, executive director of the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said, “It is very clear that Chinese attempts to compromise critical infrastructure are in part to pre-position themselves to be able to disrupt or destroy that critical infrastructure in the event of a conflict, to either prevent the United States from being able to project power into Asia or to cause societal chaos inside the United States — to affect our decision-making around a crisis.” “That is a significant change from Chinese cyber activity from seven to 10 years ago that was focused primarily on political and economic espionage,” he continued.

The attacks were aimed at disrupting logistics and stymieing U.S. mobilization capabilities, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.

Morgan Adamski, director of the National Security Agency’s Cybersecurity Collaboration Center, was able to admit the attack “appears to be focused on targets within the Indo-Pacific region, to include Hawaii.”

Joe McReynolds, a China security studies fellow at the Jamestown Foundation, added, “This is stuff they pretty clearly see as relevant to a Taiwan scenario.”>

perfidious: Junk science, all in the name of destroying competition:

<Earlier this month, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that indoor gas stoves emit harmful pollution and that a ban on selling new ones was, to quote one of the agency's commissioners, "on the table."

Several studies claim that the use of gas can cause respiratory illness. The CPSC is considering restrictions on gas stoves, including possible bans in new residential construction. But attacks on gas stoves are based on questionable science and are largely driven by concerns not related to health.

The CPSC has reportedly been considering actions on gas stoves since October. Richard Trumka Jr., a CPSC commissioner, stated, “This is a hidden hazard. Any option is on the table. Products that can’t be made safe can be banned.” Two recent studies figure prominently in agency concerns. The first, published in January last year by Eric Lebel and others, found that gas stoves and ovens emit hazardous levels of methane and nitrogen dioxide. The second, published in December last year by Talor Gruenwald and others, estimated that 12.7% of childhood asthma cases in the U.S. were due to gas stove use.

Nitrous oxide is produced at combustion temperatures above 2912 F (1,600 C) by breaking down nitrogen molecules in air. Modern stove burner flames reach temperatures above 2912 F (1,600 C), producing this gas. The nitrous oxide then combines with oxygen to form nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant.

But the amount of NO2 generated by stoves is very small — only at parts per billion (ppb) levels.

The Lebel study measured nitrogen dioxide levels of 100 ppb in kitchens, but this was only possible after sealing the room in plastic — an unrealistic, artificial condition. Other studies have found nitrogen dioxide levels as high as 34 ppb after several hours of stove and oven use. But this level is below the 53 ppb limit of the National Ambient Air Quality Standard of the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA states that, for nitrogen dioxide levels below 50 ppb, “No health impacts are expected for air quality in this range.”

Meanwhile, most studies do not find hazardous levels of nitrogen dioxide from stove use.

Nevertheless, the Gruenwald study claims that nitrogen dioxide from gas stoves is linked to asthma in children. It used statistical analysis to find an association between stoves and childhood asthma in the U.S. But the study itself states that it reviewed 27 other studies connected to gas stoves, and none reported “associations between gas stove use and childhood asthma.” In addition, the Centers for Disease Control reports that asthma attacks and asthma hospitalizations for U.S. children have been declining since 2001, while U.S. natural gas consumption rose 38% over the same period.

So, then — could it be that health concerns about gas stoves are really just a scare tactic? A pretext for advancing a political issue that people are less likely to care about?....>

perfidious: Da rest of da story:

<....For more than a decade, environmentalists have promoted “electrification” of homes. Historically, the term “electrification” meant extending the electrical grid to rural areas and homes without electricity. But the renewable energy movement redefined electrification to mean eliminating the use of carbon-based fuels such as natural gas. As they see it, electrification of homes means the replacement of gas stoves, furnaces, water heaters, and even propane grills with electric appliances. They say this is needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and solve the problem of human-caused climate change.

Talor Gruenwald, the lead author of the study on childhood asthma in the U.S., is employed by the Rocky Mountain Institute, which also funded the study. For three decades, the institute has been working on programs to counter global warming. Eric Lebel is a researcher at Stanford University, with articles on methane emissions from oil and gas wells, gas water heaters, and gas stoves. His goal appears to be to counter global warming through the electrification of homes by claiming harmful health effects from gas appliances.

The Netherlands and the United Kingdom now urge their residents to replace gas appliances with electric appliances and heat pumps as part of programs to reach net-zero emissions. These policies were adopted even though 92% of homes in the Netherlands use gas for heating and 78% of homes in the U.K. use gas. The Netherlands aims to disconnect gas lines from eight million homes by 2050.

An electrification battle rages in the U.S. cities in seven states — California, Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington — and these have established bans on gas appliances in new construction. Residents of those states pay significantly more in utility bills with electric appliances. For example, in 2020, the average price of residential natural gas in California was $14.14 per million British Thermal Units. For a new 95-percent-efficiency natural-gas furnace or water heater, this translates to a cost of just under $13 per million BTU. California’s 2020 residential electricity price translates to $60.11 per million BTU. Thus, California residents pay more than four times as much to operate electric stoves, water heaters, and electric baseboard heat compared to gas appliances.

The gas stove bandwagon might not be on its way to your state. In fact, 19 other states have recently enacted laws preventing local governments from banning natural gas and propane, or “impairing a consumer’s ability to choose a utility service.” Another four states have proposed legislation that would prohibit bans by local governments.

The bottom line is that banning gas stoves will raise homeowner costs and reduce choices, without creating any tangible improvement in health.>
