Behold the fiery disk of Ra!

Started with tournaments right after the first Fischer-Spassky set-to, but have long since given up active play in favour of poker.

In my chess playing days, one of the most memorable moments was playing fourth board on the team that won the National High School championship at Cleveland, 1977. Another which stands out was having the pleasure of playing a series of rapid games with Mikhail Tal on his first visit to the USA in 1988. Even after facing a number of titled players, including Teimour Radjabov when he first became a GM (he still gave me a beating), these are things which I'll not forget.

Fischer at his zenith was the greatest of all champions for me, but has never been one of my favourite players. In that number may be included Emanuel Lasker, Bronstein, Korchnoi, Larsen, Speelman, Romanishin, Nakamura and Carlsen, all of whom have displayed outstanding fighting qualities.

perfidious: Alina Harpy really should learn to stuff a sock in it and not do her client potential harm:

<Alina Habba, attorney for former President Donald Trump, has recently made headlines with her comments regarding the Supreme Court’s involvement in Trump’s bid to be reinstated on the ballots in Colorado and Maine. Habba’s remarks have been met with significant backlash, particularly her suggestion that Justice Brett Kavanaugh, nominated by Trump, would “step up” in the former president’s favor.

The controversy stems from Habba’s comments during an interview on Fox News’ “The Sean Hannity Show,” where she expressed confidence in a “slam dunk” victory for Trump in the Supreme Court. Specifically, she noted, “I think it should be a slam dunk in the Supreme Court. I have faith in them,” and added, “You know, people like Kavanaugh who the president fought for, who the president went through hell to get into place. He’ll step up.”

These statements ignited a firestorm of criticism, with former U.S. attorney Joyce Vance condemning the remarks as “appalling” during an MSNBC interview. Vance articulated the expectation that all federal judges, regardless of their political origins, should decide cases based on the law and the facts, not the president who appointed them. She expressed hope that Supreme Court justices were “deeply offended” by Habba’s comments.

The backlash highlights the ongoing tension surrounding Trump’s legal challenges after both Colorado and Maine removed him from their 2024 state primary ballots, citing the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause.

Habba’s remarks are particularly controversial given the composition of the current Supreme Court, which includes three justices appointed by Trump. These appointments have resulted in a conservative majority, which some fear could sway the court’s decisions in Trump’s favor.

Despite the uproar, Habba has defended her position, suggesting that the justices should focus solely on the law and the Constitution, without political influence. In another interview, she stated that the decision should be “very clean cut” and devoid of politics, arguing that the law supports Trump’s case. She also referenced comments from lawyer Alan Dershowitz, who has criticized the decisions by Colorado and Maine.

Several legal experts have thrown out varying predictions for how the nation’s highest court could rule if it decides to hear the case. Former Attorney General Bill Barr called Colorado’s case “legally wrong and untenable,” while former federal Judge Michael Luttig said the Centennial State’s ruling was not “anti-democratic,” but rather the conduct that prompted the disqualification was anti-democratic. Former White House lawyer Ty Cobb predicted the U.S. Supreme Court could rule “9-0” in favor of Trump if he appeals the Colorado Supreme Court decision, saying last month he believes the “law is clear.”>

perfidious: Shocker from many moons ago--I was facing Rizzitano on board two and could hardly believe my eyes. In the third round, it would be my turn to go at it with Benjamin, but I fared less well, as he ground me down, very professionally:

perfidious: A sprightly attacking effort from a Spanish Cordel, a line also favoured by Curdo in his day, and an object illustration of the difficulties which can befall an ill-prepared White player in this line:
