Behold the fiery disk of Ra!

Started with tournaments right after the first Fischer-Spassky set-to, but have long since given up active play in favour of poker.

In my chess playing days, one of the most memorable moments was playing fourth board on the team that won the National High School championship at Cleveland, 1977. Another which stands out was having the pleasure of playing a series of rapid games with Mikhail Tal on his first visit to the USA in 1988. Even after facing a number of titled players, including Teimour Radjabov when he first became a GM (he still gave me a beating), these are things which I'll not forget.

Fischer at his zenith was the greatest of all champions for me, but has never been one of my favourite players. In that number may be included Emanuel Lasker, Bronstein, Korchnoi, Larsen, Speelman, Romanishin, Nakamura and Carlsen, all of whom have displayed outstanding fighting qualities.

perfidious: <areknames> needs the blinders provided by iggydumb to make his way through the bilge, even if he is quite unable to see any good in those not as himself.

   Apr-02-26 Tal vs R Barstatis, 1961

perfidious: In my opinion White had run out of ideas well before the first time check. Tal mentioned this loss in his <Life and Games>, writing that he and Paul Keres had flown from Belgrade to Moscow, then to Riga for this team event the day before this game, after which Keres vs Tal,

Apr-01-26 Caruana vs Wei Yi, 2026 (replies)

perfidious: <Geoff>, perhaps as far as 5.d3 d6. Fischer's argument ran that White was at a disadvantage as he had to commit himself before his opponent did. I believe he published his views in <American Chess Bulletin>. Used to have one or two back numbers, though I was ...

   Apr-01-26 Chessgames - Sports (replies)

perfidious: See Kristian Campbell for Boston, who got one of those deals and still has not figured things out to the point where the team can justify keeping him on the ML roster.

   Apr-01-26 A Esipenko vs Giri, 2026 (replies)

perfidious: Ze silicon monstah <fishie> strongly disapproved of Esipenko's natural-looking recapture 18.Qxd3, with the evaluation swinging from edge to White to a clear disadvantage at one stroke.

perfidious: Erin Cahill.

Apr-01-26 World Championship Candidates (2026) (replies)

perfidious: Esipenko-Giri is a rara avis in modern praxis, a 6.Bg5 Najdorf, though White speedily deviated from the old main line with 7.Bd3, a sideline that has not fared at all well: Opening Explorer

   Apr-01-26 P Wolff vs M Ginsburg, 1983

perfidious: First time I have come across this game, which showcases Ginsburg's unconventional play and is another GOTD featuring two former foes.
