Behold the fiery disk of Ra!

Started with tournaments right after the first Fischer-Spassky set-to, but have long since given up active play in favour of poker.

In my chess playing days, one of the most memorable moments was playing fourth board on the team that won the National High School championship at Cleveland, 1977. Another which stands out was having the pleasure of playing a series of rapid games with Mikhail Tal on his first visit to the USA in 1988. Even after facing a number of titled players, including Teimour Radjabov when he first became a GM (he still gave me a beating), these are things which I'll not forget.

Fischer at his zenith was the greatest of all champions for me, but has never been one of my favourite players. In that number may be included Emanuel Lasker, Bronstein, Korchnoi, Larsen, Speelman, Romanishin, Nakamura and Carlsen, all of whom have displayed outstanding fighting qualities.

perfidious: Doxxing by anyone else, routine guerilla tactics for <the felon>:

<President Donald Trump recently posted a link on his Truth Social account containing the address of a property owned by New York Attorney General Letitia James, marking the second time he’s shared the state official’s personal information online.

According to the Meidas Touch Network, Trump shared a blog last week titled “AG Letitia James‘ Building Permits Raise Serious Questions,” which broached questions about the number of units at a property James owns and alleged administrative misconduct over her permit filings for the dwelling.

The article included documents showing James’ previous filings for the property, which included the home’s address.

In October 2023, Trump shared an article by far-right activist Laura Loomer that contained James’ home address.

At the time, this raised questions about whether he had violated a gag order by Judge Arthur Engoron, who oversaw the trial that determined the multi-million dollar payout he would have to pay for fraudulently inflating his worth and the value of his assets to advance his business needs. That trial was triggered by a lawsuit James filed against Trump, his sons, and his real estate enterprise.

That gag order prevented Trump from speaking publicly about court staffers after he made a false comment about Engoron’s law clerk, but James does not work on the judge’s staff, so the order did not apply to her.

Trump has gone on the offensive against James for years, alleging that the successful lawsuit she brought forth was part of a “political witch hunt” against him. These attacks were amplified by his supporters and ultimately landed her on a list of his political adversaries. He vowed that if he were to win a second term in the White House, he would pursue retribution against his political opponents.

James pledged to challenge any retaliatory attempts the president might undertake, including any federal funding cuts to the state of New York.

Trump’s recent post exposing James’ address drew backlash online. Some users even thought Trump’s intent was to endanger the attorney general by amplifying the blog.

“Posting the private information of an attorney general prosecuting you is not a legal defense, it’s intimidation, plain and simple,” one X user wrote.

“That’s disgusting,” another said.

One user called Trump a “stochastic terrorist,” a term coined by scholars and law enforcement experts that refers to “ideologically driven hate speech increases the likelihood that people will violently and unpredictably attack the targets of vicious claims,” according to Scientific American.

“He’s basically ordering a hit and the crazies know it,” one person added.>

perfidious: Her Honour Beryl Howell with the takedown, yet again:

<A federal judge used her rejection to a Justice Department request that she recuse herself from a case involving President Donald Trump to issue a stinging take down of the administration’s escalated attacks on the judiciary.

U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell shot down the disqualification request on Wednesday after the Trump DOJ accused her of showing a bias against the president based on her conduct in past cases as well as comments she made at a recent court hearing, CNN reported.

“When the U.S. Department of Justice engages in this rhetorical strategy of ad hominem attack, the stakes become much larger than only the reputation of the targeted federal judge,” Howell wrote in her ruling Wednesday.

“This strategy is designed to impugn the integrity of the federal judicial system and blame any loss on the decision-maker rather than fallacies in the substantive legal arguments presented,” the judge added.

Howell’s ruling made clear she would not step aside from the case triggered by Trump’s executive order targeting law firm Perkins Coie, which she temporarily restrained the president from moving forward on.

The ruling challenged the Justice Department’s “blanket denigration of the merits of all the lawsuits” filed against Trump’s policies, while also pointing out that courts have warned that motions for disqualification should be taken seriously, according to CNN.

“This larger concern about the overall damage to the rule of law and the federal judicial system from the feckless impugning of the decision-making process of individual federal judges has prompted Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., to criticize ‘regrettabl[e] … attempts’ by “[p]ublic officials … to intimidate judges,’ including by ‘suggesting political bias in the judge’s adverse rulings without a credible basis for such allegations,’” the judge wrote.>

perfidious: Alina Harridan trying to take care of Rump's own, gets shot down:

<Acting New Jersey US Attorney Alina Habba is on a potential collision course with a federal judge over President Trump’s recent order to pause cases against businessmen who allegedly engaged in bribery in violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA).

Newark US District Judge Michael Farbiarz refused a request by Habba’s short-tenured predecessor John Giordano for a six-month delay in a case involving alleged bribery in India — and instead ordered prosecutors to choose between an April 7 trial date and a motion to dismiss.

Farbiarz, a nominee of former President Joe Biden, refused to grant a further trial delay to Giordano by citing an assurance from Biden holdover Vikas Khanna — made 11 days after Trump’s Feb. 10 order — that “the Government intends to proceed to trial” in spite of Trump’s 180-day pause.

Khanna is the brother of Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) but remained acting US attorney for more than a month into Trump’s term, until March 2.

It’s unclear how Habba, who has served as a defense attorney and White House adviser to Trump, will handle the case.

Trump and his allies have clashed with other jurists seen as throwing a wrench into his agenda, including DC District Judge James Boasberg, whom Trump has urged be impeached for halting deportations of alleged Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador.

“The courts want to pretend they’re president, and they’re not president,” Trump vented Wednesday at a White House Women’s History Month event attended by Habba.

“The big question here is: Will Alina Habba honor President Trump’s executive order that reigns [sic] in over-expansive and unpredictable FCPA enforcement, or allow the continued weaponization against American executives as it was under Joe Biden’s DOJ?” said a longtime Republican operative familiar with the case.

In a March 11 ruling, Farbiarz effectively laid out only the two options between going to trial and moving to drop the pending case.

“Pursuant to the President’s Executive Order, directed to the Attorney General, the United States reviewed this case and made a ‘final determination’ that it should go forward,” the judge wrote, referring to Khanna’s filing.

“That took 10 or 11 days. The new United States Attorney [Giordano] has sought 180-day exclusion of time under the Speedy Trial Act to conduct a ‘supplemental analysis.’ An exclusion of that length is not warranted … because the supplemental analysis can be undertaken in about the same amount of time the [prior] review took.”

It’s unclear whether Habba will repeat demands for a 180-day delay — and a motion to drop the case altogether could be refused by the judge and subjected to further analysis, as occurred in the case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, which the Justice Department moved to dismiss last month.

The original case was brought in 2019 against two executives at Teaneck, NJ-based technology outsourcing company Cognizant who allegedly authorized $3.6 million in bribes to an Indian official to facilitate construction of a large office complex in Chennai....>

perfidious: Da rest of da excursion through Corruption Bayou:

<....Cognizant’s then-president Gordon Coburn and then-chief legal officer Steven Schwartz face criminal charges.

The alleged misconduct occurred while Trump nemesis Andrew Weissmann headed up the DOJ’s fraud division during the Obama administration. Weissmann’s involvement in the case is speculated but unclear.

Cognizant agreed in 2019 to pay $25 million to settle a Securities and Exchange Commission complaint that described alleged bribery of a Tamil Nadu state official, beginning with an initial $2 million payment in 2014.

The case is one of just a handful of FCPA prosecutions that are pending — with other cases looming in Pittsburgh and Miami.

Trump has sympathized publicly with the businessmen and bashed the law as a deterrent to international deal-making.

“It sounds so good, but it’s so bad. It hurts the country, and many, many deals are unable to be made because of it,” Trump said last month as he signed the order freezing FCPA enforcement.

“Nobody wants to do business because they don’t want to feel like every time they pick up a phone, they’re going to jail. So, we’ll sign this, and it takes courage to sign it because you only get bad publicity when you sign it. It sounds so nice.”

“The title is so lovely,” Trump said. “But it’s an absolute horror show for America. So, we’re signing it because that’s what we have to do to make it good. It’s an important one. It’s going to mean a lot more business for America.”

The order says that Attorney General Pam Bondi should review FCPA prosecutions for at least 180 days.

During that period DOJ must “cease initiation of any new FCPA investigations or enforcement actions” and “review in detail all existing FCPA investigations or enforcement actions and take appropriate action with respect to such matters to restore proper bounds on FCPA enforcement and preserve Presidential foreign policy prerogatives.”

The order says Bondi “may extend such review period for an additional 180 days as the Attorney General determines appropriate.”

Habba suggested Monday, moments after her appointment, that she intended to shake up her new office’s operations, saying she would be “making sure that we further the president’s agenda of putting America first, cleaning up the mess and going after the people that [sic] we should be going after, not the people that [sic] are falsely accused.”

The New Jersey US attorney’s office declined to comment.>

perfidious: Is it now the turn of Maxine Waters to face the wrath of self-appointed judge, jury and executioner Evil Skum?

<Elon Musk issued an ominous message to a veteran Democrat after she was filmed suggesting that First Lady Melania Trump should be investigated and possibly deported from the United States.

Rep. Maxine Waters, 86, came under fire from Musk after the video of her making threats about Melania during an anti-Department of Government Efficiency rally at the weekend in Los Angeles, California, went viral.

Musk commented on the video of Waters’ late Tuesday on X writing: “At some point, the many crimes of Maxine Waters will catch up to her.”

In the clip, published by X account “End Wokeness” and also posted by Fox News host Sean Hannity Tuesday, Waters is heard saying: “If he wants to start looking so closely to find those who were born here and their parents were undocumented, maybe he ought to first look at Melania.”

During the speech, Waters then issues an empty threat on the First Lady, declaring: “We don’t know whether or not her parents were documented. And maybe we better just take a look.”

Her comments came in relation to the Trump administration’s pledge to stamp out birthright citizenship in the U.S. – a bid that has faced multiple hurdles from judiciary officials.

The Los Angeles Times pictured Waters amid the fray of hundreds of others protesting at the rally.

Despite Musk’s remarks about “crimes,” according to public records, Waters has no criminal record.

Melania was born in Slovenia in 1970 and moved to New York in 1996 to embark on her modeling career. While in New York, Melania met Trump at a party in 1998, and seven years later, the pair exchanged vows a [sic] Mar-a-Lago.

The First Lady was initially granted U.S. entry on an "Einstein Visa," also known as an EB-1, which is traditionally reserved for highly acclaimed people in their field.

According to her White House biography, she was granted U.S. citizenship in 2006 and is now the only First Lady to become a naturalized citizen.

Melania’s parents were able to follow her to the U.S. on green cards that she sponsored in 2018.

Before floating the idea of investigating the First Lady, Waters is heard in the video slamming the President’s calls to rebuke birthright citizenship.

“When he [Trump] talks about birthright, and he’s going to undo the fact that the Constitution allows those who are born here, even if the parents are undocumented, they have a right to stay in America,” she says.

The clip was shared by Hannity on Tuesday, who titled the footage: “MAD MAXINE! Crazy California Rep Suggests First Lady Should Be Deported in Unhinged Rant.”

The Saturday rally is one of several events that have occurred across the nation since Musk began actively participating in the second Trump administration.>
