Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

chancho: For the Celtics to have a chance at beating LA in the final, Garnett needs to step up big. Gasol is eating him up.
Could he still be favoring his knee, or has age just caught up with him?
Jun-08-10  Jim Bartle: Garnett just isn't what he used to be. Gasol is much more than he used to be. Just to think, LA wouldn't be anywhere close to the finals if Memphis hadn't gift-wrapped Gasol for them a couple years ago.

Phony Benoni: <JB> And 165 is likely to remain the record, since there are so few tied games anymore. The last one was in 2005: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...
Jun-08-10  Jim Bartle: Strasberg 14 K's, no walks, 4 hits, 2 runs (a homer) in 7 innings.

Phony Benoni: Uh-oh. The "no walks" bit is particularly frightening.

keypusher: Here's a question -- why wasn't this phenom drafted before he was 20?
Jun-09-10  Jim Bartle: Strasborg was apparently a shapeless tub of lard, with no discipline at all, when he graduated from high school. His college coaches (including Tony Gwynn) thought he couldn't even make the San Diego State team. Then he lost 30 pounds and got going.

Phony Benoni: OK, let's get this straigt. It's <Stephen Strasburg>, with a "ph" in the first name and a "u" in the last.

Although I'm sure he'll get some cute nickname very soon which will render the correct spelling irrelevant.

Jun-09-10  playground player: Before anybody gets too excited about this kid (pregnant pause)... remember Bo Belinsky.
Jun-09-10  A.G. Argent: This kid is going to be good for the game in general. I just hope they bring him along carefully. Remember Mark Prior; done by 25. But man, did you see highlights of his 14 K's? http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?c...
Pretty damned nasty, and no fluke just because it was the hapless Pirates. All due respect, Pittsburgh but he's the real thing.
Jun-09-10  Jim Bartle: I saw the last inning. Amazing.

I just hope he doesn't join this list: Kerry Wood, Gary Nolan, Don Gullett, Mark Prior, David Clyde, Steve Avery. And, I guess, Dwight Gooden.

In large part the damage has probably been done or not done--how he was cared for in high school and college. I remember reading about Kerry Wood pitching both ends of doubleheaders in high school, a disaster waiting to happen.

  keypusher: <Jim Bartle>

There must have been a time it was OK to pitch both ends of a double-header. After all, 100 years ago they did it in the major leagues (occasionally). But at some point pitching became too demanding, and a lot of arms got ruined.

I'm cautiously optimistic. The Nationals are obviously being careful, otherwise they would have kept him in for the last two innings. And I am sure Tony Gwynn was careful too.

Jun-09-10  Deus Ex Alekhina: Selig (a man of action) will no doubt want to do something about all of this tremendous pitching. He will probably recommend that the pitching mound be lowered again (a trench, maybe?)
Jun-09-10  Jim Bartle: Hmmmmm....Travis?

Of course, he'll probably celebrate for a few hours first. It's not often the White Sox score 15 runs in one game.

Phony Benoni: And from here as well. It never bothers me when one of the Original Six takes the Cup.
Jun-11-10  Travis Bickle: Thanks Dr Benoni! Next season The Blackhawks vs The Redwings matchups will be very exciting to watch!!
Jun-11-10  A.G. Argent: OK, Czar, I ain't never been much of a hockey guy although I found myself enjoying watching the Olympics gold medal game and that kinda spilled over to me checking in with the NHL playoffs this year and watching some of the finals so who are the Original Six?
Jun-11-10  Jim Bartle: Montreal, Toronto, New York Rangers, Boston, Detroit, Chicago. The entire league until six teams, a whole new division, were added around 1969.

Before 1969 only 130 players were good enough for the top league. The minor leagues, such as the Western Hockey League, had a lot of good players.

Four teams made the playoffs, and in the 60s the Rangers and Bruins were the teams left out almost every year.

Jun-11-10  Deus Ex Alekhina: Silly me, I thot all that whooping & hollering coming from Travis' cab was becuz the World Cup has started.
Jun-11-10  A.G. Argent: Jim, well, I thought the Trojan thing was funny, if nobody else did.
