| Sep-28-11 | | technical draw: The wild card race is really, well, wild. In both leagues first place is tied and each have one game to play. Tampa or Boston?
Atlanta or St.Louis?
I'd rather see Tampa and St. Louis win.... |

 | | WannaBe: http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/sto... Agree? Disagree? When Braun plays, he bats 3rd in the line-up. Most likely, he will get 4 or 5 plate appearance. Any HBP or BB does not help, M. Kemp have a looooong shot at the batting crown. If he gets 15 plate appearances tonight and goes 15 for 15, (all 15 hits are HR, 24 RBIs) in a thirty inning 28-26 Dodgers victory. |

 | | WannaBe: News Items:
1, Yankees will start 23 years old, 6'8" Brooklyn native Dellin Betances as their starter tonight in Tampa Bay. http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/previ... Betances have a record of 0-0 and 27.00 ERA, that is correct, twenty-seven point zero zero. NOT A TYPO! 2, Ozzie Guillen is introduced by Florida as their new manager, now fans of the Marlins can really learn some 'new' Spanish words! |

 | | Phony Benoni: It happens frequently. In fact, Ted Williams not sitting to preserve his .400 average is probably more unusual. I'm enough of a purist to dislike the practice of putting individual goals ahead of the team, even when the game is "meaningless". Probably the most egregious example of this came in 1910. Ty Cobb had a good lead over Nap Lajoie going into the final day, and decided to sit. Lajoie was playing in a doubleheader against the St. Louis Browns, and the figures at the time showed he would have to go 8 for 8 to pass Cobb. He went 8 for 8!
However, most of these hits were bunt singles down the third base line where the rookie third baseman was playing on the outfield grass. He had been ordered to do so by his manager and a coach, seeking to take the batting title away from the universally despised Cobb. Preserving a player's average is one thing. Deliberately allowing another player to increase his average is going too far. The manager and coach were banned for life. And, when the final official figures came out, Cobb won the title anyway. (At least at the time; later research has shown Lajoie came out ahead.) There's a similar situation in the ERA race in the American League. Justin Verlander leads Jered Weaver by 2.40 to 2.41. Originally, Weaver was supposed to start tonight against Texas, but when the Angels were eliminated on Monday a decision was made not to use him. However, Weaver could pass Verlander just by getting two outs without giving up a run, and I wouldn't be shocked to see him toss an inning in relief. The decision not to start Weaver impacts the Tigers in a much more important way. They remain a game behind Texas for the #2 seed, and without Weaver pitching tonight there would seem to be little chance that Texas will lose. |

| Sep-28-11 | | Jim Bartle: What's the verdict here on that batting race between Brett and McRae, when a seemingly catchable fly to left by Brett fell untouched. 1975 or so. |

 | | keypusher: Some interesting if currently irrelevant trivia, courtesy of the Baseball Crank: <Curtis Granderson is currently leading the AL in RBI, but has not been intentionally walked this season, not even once. The only previous player to lead the league in RBI without drawing an intentional walk, since IBB started being tracked in 1955? It shouldn't surprise you: Roger Maris in 1961 (well, it did surprise me a little, since Mickey missed 9 games that year). Besides those two, the only other player to hit 40 homers without an intentional walk is Alex Rodriguez at age 22 in 1998, when he stole 46 bases and hit in front of Griffey, Edgar and Buhner. Also if you're wondering, only three players have drawn 100 walks in a season without the aid of an intentional pass. The leader is Rickey Henderson in 1998, when he slugged .347 as a punchless 39-year-old but led the league with 66 steals - the classic guy you would rather make hit. The other two? Randy "Moose" Milligan in 1992 (who mostly batted ahead of the fearsome Joe Orsulak - I think it was more a comment on how bad a year Milligan had), and Chone Figgins in 2009. The top 11 are ten guys who slugged below .400, and Maris.> |

 | | WannaBe: According to Wiki's page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hal_Mc... Brett went 2-4 that game, and edged out McRae while they were both on KC. 1976 was the year... If I read <Phony Benoni> correct, I don't think, or want to think, it was racial. Let us take a look: 1972-1975 Rod Carew (Panama, US Zone)
1971 Tony Oliva (Cuba)
1970 Alex Johnson (WASP)
1969 Rod Carew
1967, 1968 Carl Yastrzemski (Polish)
1966 Frank Robinson
1964, 1965 Tony Oliva
1963 Carl Yastrzemski
1962 Pete Runnels (WASP)
1961 Norm Cash (WASP)
Anyway... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o... is where I got the info. |

 | | Phony Benoni: From an article at Retrosheet:
<"And finally, Hal McRae and George Brett's battle for the batting championship is well-known today for the controversy surrounding Brett's decisive hit in his final at-bat. After the game (actually, even during the game), McRae accused Minnesota Twins' manager Gene Mauch of ordering left-fielder Steve Brye to play too deep, permitting Brett's fly-ball to fall (and eventually be scored an inside-the-park home run). Which brings us full circle, since those questionable hits that Lajoie received back in 1910 supposedly were the result of Browns' manager Jack O'Connor ordering his third-baseman, rookie Red Corridon, to play too deep."> |

Jon Lester have a career mark of 14-0 with 2.33 ERA against Baltimore O's, however, in his last 3 starts, he is 0-3, averaging 4 2/3 innings per start, K/BB ratio of 10/8, ERA of 10.54, TEN POINT FIVE FOUR. Not a typo. And, when he starts tonight, he will be working on three days rest. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Yankees start their sensational rookie, Dellin Betances. He has an ERA of 27.00, but has been getting pitching tips from Brian Matusz. Boston is jumping, but hard to say whether it's from joy or not. |

Except that Rickey hit out of that exaggerated crouch, so it was hard not to walk Rickey with Rickey's tiny strike zone. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Speaking of batting titles, Miguel Cabrera is doing it the right way. He came into the game batting .343, ahead of Adrian Gonzalez and Michael Young at .338. Instead of sitting, he played and has gone 2 for 4 so far. Of course, the game still has some importance for the Tigers. |
