Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: The comeback did show one thing: the Rangers have some speed, and they know how to use it. One of the big advantages they had over the lead-footed Tigers.

<Teammates expect me to know every answer to every question. During training camp, some guys were in a big, heated discussion, so I walked over to see what they were talking about. They said, 'Fitz, you can answer this question, you're from Harvard.' I said, 'Okay, maybe it's some trivial question, some history, something.' They said, 'What do you think would hurt more, getting hit in the face by the trunk of an elephant or being kicked in the face by a donkey?'>

WannaBe: Alright, we got USC-ND, Wisc-Mich St., and some beeeeseball game tonight, gonna be a great day for watching sports and 'hanging out' with the GOBCs (Good Ol' Boys Club).
Oct-22-11  Shams: 25 UW @ 8 Stanford 5pm Pacific. Take the over.
Oct-22-11  Jim Bartle: Used to be USC always played Notre Dame at the end of the season, and both teams were usually highly ranked. But so many things have changed in college football.
Oct-22-11  I play the Fred: Anyone else think it's appropriate that Lebron James and Michelle Wie appear in the same ad campaign? Granted, they forgot all about Tony Romo and Anna Kournikova.

WannaBe: <JB> It's at the end of the season if the game is at LA, if the game is at South Bend, it's Mid-season game. Per original contract stipulation, 'SC does not want to play in the snow, hence.

So, next year, or last year, the game is towards the end of the season, I believe last year, 'SC played ND, and then finished their season by whipping UCLA, (as usual, we suck.)

Oct-22-11  Shams: <Per original contract stipulation, 'SC does not want to play in the snow.>

What a bunch of softies!

WannaBe: Well, that was because Mrs. Rockne enjoyed the warmer SoCal winter, and convinced Knute to schedule 'SC, so they can escape the mid-west for a week or so (trains back then, no planes...)

Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> I figured that was a joke until I checked Wikipedia for the true story. Turns out there's a legend that the wife of the USC coach met Mrs. Rockne at a Thanksgiving Day game in Nebraska, and convinced her that a biennial trip to Southern California would beat one to Nebraska any time, particularly in November.

WannaBe: I can hear Mrs. Rockne right now: "Honey, if we don't go to Southern California, I'll invite my mother over for Thanksgiving, and Christmas, every year!"

WannaBe: <Shams> Wow, taking the over looks to be great bet! 24-14 11:30 left in the 2nd qtr.
Oct-22-11  Jim Bartle: That Mrs. Rockne story is a coverup. It was really George Gipp who wanted to go to Southern California.

Some really great games in that series. I remember around 1964 when Notre Dame was #1 under Parseghian, with Huarte to Snow, and had just crushed everybody. Somehow USC beat them 20-17.

After looking at the included video I think the ball was on the line momentarily, but I don't know if it was indisputable.

That Albert Pujols has some three-point shot.

Oct-23-11  Travis Bickle: Hello Dr Benoni. What is your take on Theo Epstein going over to the Chicago Cubs and what players should he immediately make a pitch for?

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...

Oct-23-11  Jim Bartle: Looking at the article Travis links to, I just can't picture Albert Pujols as a Cub. Then again, if he did sign, he might destroy the ivy all by himself.
