Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Aug-27-06  JoeWms: <Phony Benoni: Yes, correspondence chess is just another name for postal chess. Moves will be transmitted via e-mail instead.>

Neat and economical response. Thanks. (Not so this post.)

I am out in the car lot kicking tires on correspondence chess. CC is too busy as the TD to answer the silly questions an old-timer like me should not be asking.

When my eyes got too bad for me to play OTB chess 15-20 years ago I got wrapped up in USCF postal for about two years and then I quit. At one time I was playing 50 games. Why did I quit?

Well, would you want to play someone who would plug every easy Monday-level board position into his Radio Shack machine as soon as he got the card out of the mailbox? Of course you would not.

Neither would my opponents -- if they knew about it!

I got so damn disgusted with myself about what I was doing, I resigned 36 postal games at one time. And felt so much better because of it. That was pretty much the last time I played a competitive chess game. I would barely hit the charts at 1200 right now.

It started so innocently: Just this one cigarette, just this one beer, just this one computer move -- what harm can it do?

Major question: Is all computer use disallowed? (If so, I don't suppose my opponent would tell me if he was using help.)

Would I be able to test drive with just one white and one black game? I first must check out the Schemingmind interface and the stuff I have on my setup to navigate the site.

If I register with Schemingmind right now, would I start getting e-mails from Timbuktu wanting to go -- right now?

If you're too busy in the outside world to be bothered with these silly Q's, let my post sit awhile and maybe somebody else will tackle them.

Repeat: I'm just kicking tires.

Phony Benoni: <Joe Wms> Some uses of the computer are allowed in correspondence. For instance, you can use a computer to store your games, or use a database to look up opening lines. Basically, anything that you can do with a book, you can do with a computer.

However, you are generally not allowed to use a computer to analyze a position and suggest moves. This is considered the same as asking a person to help you analyze a game in progress. You can, if you like, do your analysis on the computer screen, and even store variations on the computer in the same way that you would write them down on paper. But the moment you get that little Fritzie running, you are technically cheating.

Note that I say generally. There are competitions where computer analysis is allowed. I think, though, that will not be the case in this event, but this needs to be confirmed with CC.

I haven't investiaged Schemingmind carefully, but one thing they do have is a option to play a "Welcome" game upon registration. There is also a personal preferences area, where you can limit the number of challenges you receive, or even block them altogether.

Glad to be of assistance. I monitor this site often on the weekends, not so much during working hours.

Aug-28-06  JoeWms: Thank you, <Phony Benoni>, for being so helpful. Take care, friend.
Aug-29-06  Willem Wallekers: <My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play.> So did I, and better still, it was in a busy student's cafetaria with lots of kibitzers around who knew enough about chess to understand what was going on but had never seen it before.

Phony Benoni: <Willem Wallekers> Mine occurred in a tournament. I was sorely tempted to start tearing my hair out while screaming, "AUUUGGHH!!!" This would have brought everyone to my table to see what was going on, so that they could witness the brillancy.

But I refrained. In the first place, I'm a nice guy. More importantly, I don't have that much hair to spare.

Phony Benoni: In the comic strip "Mother Goose and Grimm", the Grimm character is a dog who is forever chasing cars. One day, he actually caught one. The cartoon featured him sitting next to hhis prey with a befuddled look on his face, thinking, "Now what do I do?"

I imagine that's how Reilly felt during this game, starting when he achieved the early e4 push and continuing when his constant simplification, instead of producing a draw, just kept making his position worse.

Aug-30-06  brankat: <PB> I've been trying to organize a consultation game, something along the lines of "the Yanks" vs "the Cunucks", 3 players on each team. Canadian team is set-up and ready, now I'm working on the American counterpart. I will take care of all the other organisational matters. If things work out, the game would start by the end of this, or early next week.

I'd love to see You on the American team. The reason? It is in Your Bio: "I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again." :-)

Should You be willing to take part in the contest, it would be a pleasure and a privilege. Could You please drop me a line at my forum, at Your earliest convenience. Thank You so much.

Aug-30-06  brankat: <Phony Benoni> Thank You for joining the team. I've posted a more elaborate reply in my forum.

WannaBe: I have to ask, since the curiosity finally got the best of me, I know a Benoni (defence).

But what is a Phony Benoni?

Aug-31-06
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: <wannaBe> It goes back to the days when tournament scoresheets had a box for "opening". I tried to be creative filling this in, inventing names such as "Royal Pez", "Pet Rock", and "King's Idiot Defense".

"Phony Benoni" was simply meant that White hadn't allowed the main line of the Modern Benoni; e.g., 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.Nf3.

One of the more obscure names I came up with occurred when I got a chance to play the Marshall Counterattack during the 1985 U.S. Open in Hollywood, Florida. I wrote: "Frankie Goes to Hollywood". If you understand that, you're dating yourself.

Aug-31-06  yanez: <phoney benoni> in that case the main line of the phoney benoni defence is probably 3...cxd4 4.nxd4 e5 5.Nb5 Bc5

Sep-01-06  brankat: <Phony Benoni> Hi buddy! The Consultation game update.

We are still 1(one) player short for the Anerican team. I'm still waiting for <square dance>'s reply - till 3:00 PM EST, Friday. Also I have invited <AgentRgent>, who recently moved to Toronto from the States, to join Canadian team. Should he accept then I'll step aside and act as a Host/Arbiter. Waiting for his reply, too. Also 3:00 PM Friday.

When You have a moment, would You please drop by at my forum and take a look at the rules/guidelines which I had posted in 3 fairly elaborate posts, page 26. Let me know what You think. Suggestions, additions etc, welcome, before the final draft. Thank You.

Sep-02-06  brankat: <Phony Benoni> I am very happy to inform You that the Canadian squad is now officially set-up. Finally! The line-up: <AgentRgent>, <Hesam7> and <THE pawn>. They still have to select the team Captain, the team name and the consultation Forum. Btw, this reminds me, You guys should also come up with a name for Your team, perhaps something flashy? Certainly something politically Incorrect :-) It looks like <suenteus> is working on it already. Writers! When You do, please let me know.

And one more reminder. Unless You guys have done this already, please take a look at "rules/regulations" I had posted so far, mostly in a few posts on pages 25-26 of my forum. Let me then know if You have any additional suggestions, concerns etc. This esspecially in regards to time controls. Then I can finalize the "statute". I would like to have this done by Sunday evening. Thank You so much.

Sep-02-06  chessmoron: For the Canadian team, the nickname should be "True North" which is a poetic name for Canada.
Sep-03-06  square dance: attention team...

we have the white pieces so its time to decide on a strategy. i believe the best way to get together would be in a 3 way instant messenger service, or a chat room where we can all participate. i know msn has 3 way chatting, but that requires some downloading. anyone have any ideas?

WannaBe: <square dance> go to yahoo, get a private table, or go to FICS get yourself a channel, and observe one of your member, then you can chat and analyze moves all you want.

Try to not sacrifice your king too early.

Phony Benoni: <square dance> Whatever we do, it will have to be simple. VERY simple. One trait of my advanced age is that I am a technological idiot.

By the way, I normally work 9-5 (Eastern Time) and won't be available weekdays during that time. Evenings (up to about 11:00) and weekends are fine; I've got nothing else to do.

Sep-03-06  suenteus po 147: <Phony Benoni> & <square dance> My email is suenteus_po_147@yahoo.com. Very original, I know. I have classes (both taking as a student and teaching as an instructor) on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Mondays are 4-11pm EST and Tuesdays and Thursdays are 10-5pm EST. I will check in every day, of course, but during those hours I have limited to know access to my computer or to the internet. I think, though that our strategy will play out well over the course of several days while single move discussions will see heated and quick decisions based on long strategic discussions.

<we have the white pieces so its time to decide on a strategy.> I echo <Phony Benoni>'s need for technological simplicty. I have no instant messenger. Chat room would work, but it should be something simple to load, like Yahoo Chess or FICS. I like <WannaBe>'s suggestion. Do we all have FICS with babachess or the equivalent? I do.

In terms of a first move, I'm up for anything. My experience is primarily with 1.e4 and 1.f4, but I'm more than willing to try 1.d4, 1.c4, or 1.Nf3 as well. I see 1.b3 as being brotherly to 1.f4 so that is also fine. Basically, any opening move that has plenty of precedent has my vote depending on your guys' preference.

Phony Benoni: <suenteus po 147> Turns out that <square dance> and I are both 1.e4 types. Normally, I'm a wild-and-crazy gambit kind of guy, but in a game like this I think it's probably bettter to stick to solid lines and accept the small advantage of the first move. We're not going to catch them by surprise.

1.f4 might have the advantage of taking them out of their comfort zone of defenses. But, again, we have to count on them finding a good defense, and theoretically that may be easier against 1.f4.

<square dance> and I chatted briefly yesterday, and he thinks that they will play the Alekhine (1...Nf6) against 1.e4, something which neither of us feels really comfortable facing. So who knows? We still have a lot of time to decide, particularly with today being a holiday.

By the way, I normally work 9-5 weekdays. Sometimes I can check in on my lunch hour, but otherwise I'm restricted to evenings and weekends.
