Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> & <playground player> What was that bad blood about? Mets wasn't around for that long... So it's not like Juan vs. Johnny.

Care to teach this young pup what was that brawl all about?

Dec-20-11  Shams: Apropos of the below conversation, I've decided the French/Fort Knox Variation is the "Prevent Defense" of chess. Good to see it get beaten over the top every once in a while:

Parma vs G Forintos, 1977

Dec-21-11  Jim Bartle: WannaBe: No idea about that fight. The Mets had only been in existence for a month or two.
Dec-21-11  playground player: <WannaBe> As I recall it, that brawl started when Willie Mays slid into second base and Mets shortstop Elio Chacon started beating on him. Chacon's English was non-existent, and few sportswriters in 1962 understood any Spanish, so I never knew why Elio attacked Willie. But Willie rose up and body-slammed Elio.

Meanwhile Orlanda Cepeda, who was at bat during these events, strolled out to the mound to confront Roger Craig. A couple of Craig's pitches had come a little too close for Orlando's liking. It ought to be borne in mind that Craig was a long-time Dodger (Brooklyn and LA) and had a history with the Giants.

As Cepeda approached, Roger shed his glove and prepared to box. He did a few Marquis of Queensbury moves while Orlando's fist dropped practically to the ground and then came up real, real fast. He knocked Roger off his feet.

At that point the benches emptied. What I remember about that was Willie McCovey charging out to join the brawl, having just returned from a spell on the disabled list--and Manager Alvin Dark, fearful of seeing the Giants' season go up in smoke, actually tackled McCovey and held on, keeping him out of the fight.

I think the battle had its origin in bad blood between Cepeda and Craig, a hard slide by Willie Mays, and the Mets' frustration simply boiling over. It ain't much fun to travel all over the country while losing almost every game.

WannaBe: I see, I see, says the blind man. =)
Dec-21-11  Jim Bartle: Odd that Mays' slide was just getting back to second on a pickoff throw, not on a steal attempt or breaking up a double play. How hard could it have been?

Was Chacón the shortstop who yelled "Yo la tengo" on pop flies, giving the name to a pop band?

Dec-21-11  Deus Ex Alekhina: Has anyone seen the tape of Don Mattingly as Mother Ginger in the Nutcracker ballet? Strange. BTW <Bartle>, now we know why it is called "Candlestick" Park. (You need to bring one with you)
Dec-21-11  King Death: Big changes ahead in Wrigley Land?

http://www.csnchicago.com/blog/cubs...

<“The Cubs have never had the guts to completely blow up their roster and build it the right way. They have to have a plan for sustained success instead of always trying to patchwork a roster for a surprising season. They should have done that when Andy MacPhail took over but for whatever reason they couldn’t or wouldn’t. By the time Jim Hendry became the GM they had some young starting pitching and a mandate from management in 2006-09 to try to buy their way to a championship. It never worked out so the rebuild is the right way to go.">

Dec-21-11  Jim Bartle: Cubs need more guys with that ole team spirit like Carlos Zambrano.
Dec-21-11  Jim Bartle: Purported true story of "Yo la tengo." It was Richie Ashburn:

One constant source of Keystone Cop mishaps was the lack of communication between Ashburn, playing center, and the Mets shortstop, a Venezuelan named Elio Chacon. Chacon didn’t speak English, so when Richie would yell “I got it! I got it!” Chacon would keep chasing after the ball and the two would inevitably collide, allowing the ball to fall harmlessly to earth. Finally, the team’s right fielder Joe Christopher, who was bilingual, suggested that instead of yelling, “I got it!”, Richie should yell “Yo La Tengo!” to ward off the shortstop. Ashburn and the young shortstop agreed on it, and sure enough a few games later, a pop fly went into left center, between Ashburn and Chacon. “Yo La Tengo! Yo La Tengo!” shouted Whitey. Chacon stopped in his tracks. Whitey reached his glove up to make the catch…and got plowed over by Mets left fielder Frank Thomas, who didn’t speak Spanish. Whitey and Frank fell to the ground, and the ball landed between them. As they got up to collect themselves, Howard turned to Ashburn and said, “What the heck is a yellow tango?”

Me, moi, the humbled wabbit, still think the whole '81 and '88 Dodgers should be in. Yes, even the concession stand-hot-dog-giver should be in. Heck, even the parkin' lot policemen should be in!!

WannaBe: Okay, if you scroll down, about 3/4 way, of the link I posted previously, for '13 class, I'd vote for the 2 Atl. pitchers, F. Thomas and C. Biggio are borderline (my opinion, and only mine.) Okay, I'll give J. Kent some love and vote for him in '16... He did play the Dodgers after all. But did not win a Championship for them.

Breakin' your hand/arm washing your truck?! C'mon dude...

I hate to vote to Atl. players, they are probably 3rd behind NYY/SFG players. But, you have to admire G.M. and T.G. Cy Young winners and only 1 World Series Championship.

I'll give them gentlemen sympathy votes. How can a franchise make the post-season that many times, with that rotation/line-up and win only 1?! (By beating the Indians!? Indians?!)

The big clue was having Williams and Gehrig in the same game. 1939 was Williams' first year and Gehrig's last, and this turns out to be the only game in which they appeared together.

WannaBe: Here is a good one from http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7...

<• As loyal reader Joel Luckhaupt reports, in a May 16 game against the Reds, the ever-resourceful Miguel Cairo saw 12 pitches in the sixth inning -- and didn't swing at any of them. This was season No. 25 in the fabulous pitch-count era, and nobody has ever gone swing-free in an inning for that many pitches except Cairo, a guy who (in an extremely unrelated development) hasn't walked 20 times in a season in over a decade.>

They must have batted around that inning.

See how N.O. can play MNF and next week. Maybe Detroit have a date in S.F., or N.O.!

Merry Christmas, good will towards (wo)men, and give me more carrots!
