Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: <Travis> Well, minus quarterback, running back, and top receiver, it's easy to make excuses. News is Cutler might make it back for the last two games. Of course, it may be too late.

The big question about the Bears for me is whether they're still playing with passion, or mailing it in. If the latter, Mr. Smith may have to go to Washington next year.

Detroit got a big break today with Green Bay losing. They play the Packers the last week, and Green Bay may well be cruising instead of playing for perfection. Lions just need one more win for the playoffs. I was hoping for good things against San Diego at home next week, but the way they're destroying the Ravens tonight I don't know.

Dec-18-11  Travis Bickle: Phony, Good luck to your Lions! I hope the Bears dial in the next few games and get Lovie on the next plane out of here!

Dec-19-11  Travis Bickle: <WannaBe> Hey Bugs how the hell did Janokowski miss that chip shot field goal? He made six against The Bears. ; P
Dec-19-11  Travis Bickle: <Wannabe> I agree prevent defenses don't work, Coach Lovie Dovie proved that against Denver.

Phony Benoni: <Travis> Suh got a thumb on the kick and deflected it. He would have gotten a finger on it, but then he would have been penalized for making an unsportsmanlike gesture.
Dec-19-11  Travis Bickle: But upon reflection it's been a great day...The CHEESEHEADS LOST!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!

Lifes Been Good - Joe Walsh

Dec-19-11  Travis Bickle: Yeah Phony, the way they penalize 'real football players' for hitting big lard ass QB's like Tim Tebow who run more than they pass, I think they ought to put a dress on em like Jack Lambert once said. LOL!
Dec-19-11  King Death: If the Steelers had Big Ben healthy tonight I'd like their chances, but that injury changes things. They'll still get in of course with two weakies on the menu, but a first round bye and one more week to rest up couldn't hurt, instead of opening with a road game and probably having to win 3 of them to get to the Super Bowl.

Of course, now that I've said that, I realize that in the last few years, #1 seeds have had a hard time. Among other things, Dallas lost in 2007, then the Giants went down hard the next year after getting that spot.

WannaBe: Currently, SF is favoured by 3 pts, O/U is 38 http://espn.go.com/nfl/lines so, you're looking at nothing more than 'home field' adv. for SF. O/U 38, 19-19 going into OT?

Heard on the local radio last Friday, SF is putting out a 'plea' to fans who will attend the sold-out MNF game, to be 'quiet(er)' when offence have the ball.

Apparently the locals either don't know how to help out their own team, or they are over zealous in showing their 'enthusiasms'.

Quite a buzz around the Bay area, needless to say about the game tonight, maybe SF was looking ahead to this game when they lost to Arz??

WannaBe: Drew Brees needs 305 yards to break Marino's record, and on Monday Night, day after X'mas, NO hosts Atl. Falcons, and then hosts Carolina.

So, let us look at the numbers... This will be Atl.'s final road game, in their previous 7 games on the road, they have given up (passing yards only):

Chi: 289
TB: 180
Sea: 319
Det: 159
Ind: 103
Hou: 175
Car: 259

Average: 212 yd per game. Maybe Brees will do it at the final home game vs. Carolina.

Dec-19-11  Jim Bartle: Indiana's giving up only 103 yards passing a game? They must be great!!

On the other hand, maybe their rush defense is so bad nobody needs to pass.

Dec-20-11  King Death: The Colts are bad, period. The signs were there even last year when they went 10-6 and squeaked out a title in a weak division. Without Manning to put up 300 yards a game, the porous defense is exposed more than ever.
Dec-20-11  playground player: <Phony Benoni>, <Jim Bartle> Yesterday I got to hear an interview I did on the radio. Great Glamis! I sound like Tim McCarver imitating Willie McCovey.

So, the Colts are the Super Bowl Champs!!!
