Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Dec-18-11  King Death: The Cards and Jets are coming up small in games where they have something to play for? They'd fit right in with the Giants and Texans.

WannaBe: It's fourth qtr, and Denver Broncos are down, so it must be Tebow Time.

(Kinda like Hammer Time, but without the parachute pants... Can't touch this... Doo-doo-doo-doo. Don't hurt 'em Tebow!)

Phony Benoni: Somehow, I don't think the Tebow Mojo will come through today. Wish there was another game on worth watching.

WannaBe: Denver down 11, 8:40 on the clock, lots of time!! Unless you're the Dallas head coach, you'll probably mis-manage the clock, somehow...
Dec-18-11  King Death: The game tying "drive" for the Cards: 4 plays, -10 yards. Now they just have to hold on for OT. The Lions still have a shot!

WannaBe: Bleepin', Bleep, Bleep, Bleep!! How does a defence let them drive 98 yards?!?!

Repeat after me, PREVENT DEFENCE DOES NOT WORK.

Dec-18-11  Jim Bartle: And how does the defense not have anyone in the center to defend against Detroit's best receiver, one of the best in the league?
Dec-18-11  Jim Bartle: All right. LaMonica (#3) hits Casper (#87) with a big pass, the Notre Dame connection.

Phony Benoni: <tpstar> That was when they were down 13.

Can't believe Oakland forgot to play the Cover-10: ten guys on Calvin Johnson, and the 11th keeping an eye on him.

Dec-18-11  King Death: And the prevent again prevents a team from winning. It's strange how teams never seem to learn that playing soft zone is a terrible percentage play.
Dec-18-11  Jim Bartle: I particularly like the soft zone that lets Johnson get completely behind the defense twice. On the long bomb he could have walked it in he was so far out in front, except Stafford underthrew him about ten yards. And he still caught it!

Phony Benoni: I would like to see studies on a team's winning percentage using the prevent defense in tight, last-minute situations. My guess would be that it works the vast majority of times, but that only the disasters get remembered.

As <JB> pointed out, if Oakland was playing the prevent they were playing it poorly. No way should Johnson have been that wide open on the bomb.

But "The Prevent Defense just prevents you from winning" is one of those snazzy clichés sports announcers are so good at repeating. If it was such a bad strategy, it wouldn't be used. Football coaches are not dumb.

Dec-18-11  King Death: <Phony Benoni> Sure, but why play it so soft that you basically guarantee those large gains? They could tighten it up some without giving away much.
Dec-18-11  hangingenprise: prevent.....prevent that is the most
( ) ever. switch to the patriot bronco game and there in the same prevent. three guys rushing, brady completes pass on 3rd and 29 for 20 yards and a personal foul penalty..... as phony stated: you have to play discipline football. can't they get that concept in their heads. i almost had to use the <wannabe> link meant for <travis>
Dec-18-11  Jim Bartle: It's hard to generalize, but Oakland's loss today can't be blamed on the prevent defense. The biggest play wasn't a pass in front of the "prevent," but one where the receiver ran far beyond the so-called prevent.
Dec-18-11  hangingenprise: megatron............scoreboard
Dec-18-11  Jim Bartle: Anybody see that shot Brady took straight to the chest, where he didn't even see the guy coming?

He didn't fumble, didn't miss a play, in fact completed a pass on the next snap. That's a tough guy.

Dec-18-11  King Death: <Jim Bartle> Shhhhh. Don't tell any of Brady's detractors that ever happened. To hear them tell it, he's the biggest wimp ever to play under center. I'm sure also that some of them were among those who rushed into the streets last year to scream that Jay Cutler wasn't really hurt either.

By the way, did any of those loudmouths ever apologize to Cutler? I've always thought he was a bit of a whiner, but he showed plenty of courage in that instance.

Dec-18-11  Travis Bickle: The Bears SUCK! On the bright side maybe we can get some draft picks? Nah, The Bleep bleep bleep bleepin McCaskey's will trade the picks for cash and a player to be named never. ; (
