Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: <King Death> Anybody in the Lions' secondary should be the last to make statements like that. There's going to some unemployment among the members of that unit next year.

It's amazing how many athletes--and real people, for that matter--seem to think that Twitter is a private diary instead of a world-wide press conference with all the cameras rolling. What happens on Twitter stays on Twitter, and never goes away.

Jan-09-12  King Death: <Phony Benoni> It's true and I wouldn't want any part of Twitter for that. It's one thing to share with friends but another to blurt every thought that comes into your head. Maybe I'm too much of a private person but that's the way I feel.

Playing Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler twice a year is tough for the best defensive backs and I've hardly heard of this guy Berry.

They'll have to get some help in the draft for their secondary before they can go far. Trying to outgun some of the QBs out there is a hard way to earn a living even when you have Matthew Stafford in your corner. Another team that's in that boat is Dallas. They can't stop anything.

Jan-09-12  Jim Bartle: Lions' players are in an odd situation in relation to the team's fans.

The Detroit fan base (I assume) is having a tough time in general, but the Lions and their players don't really depend that much on the supporters of the team. Most of their money comes from the national TV contracts, which is split evenly among all the teams.

So the players depend economically greatly on NFL fans, but not as much on Detroit fans.

Still, really bad on that player's part to knock the fans.

Jan-09-12  harrylime: I've taken some tips off this page and am gonna lump on Saints/Packers/Patriots/Ravens in a four game accumulator..

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012...

Jan-09-12  Jim Bartle: That guy looks like a future Darwin Award nominee. Maybe alongside Metta World Peace.
Jan-09-12  Travis Bickle: So this is the reason Tebow pulled off a miracle yesterday!

http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/01/09...

Jan-09-12  hangingenprise: the football world is still a-buzz about the broncos. the cbs brass must love the new england, denver
match-up since the ratings for a
wild card yesterday set a record for
people watching especially in the
fourth quarter.
Jan-09-12  hangingenprise: <travis> watch out for <phony> lions. they will shore up the secondary throught the draft and a free agent?, and since they don't have program killer matt millen it won't be receiver.
Jan-09-12  King Death: All hail Barry Larkin! He'll be making a trip to upstate New York this summer: http://eye-on-baseball.blogs.cbsspo...

Stay classy Barry. The Hall needs more like you.

Jan-09-12  King Death: So Jack Morris got 2/3 of the possible votes. Normally I'd say this makes him just about a sure thing for 2013, but that group is a tough one even though I bet some don't get in because of that steroid haze. It's a shame that innuendo can be used to keep some out (Jeff Bagwell again this year) but we'll be seeing this for a long time in the future.

Here's another CBS link on next year's class. The writer makes some interesting if debatable points. http://eye-on-baseball.blogs.cbsspo...

Jan-09-12  Travis Bickle: <hangingenprise> Yes Detroit has a real good QB and a monster DT! Hopefully we can get a decent GM to get some solid draft picks. What about your Raiders next year?
Jan-09-12  Travis Bickle: Dr Benoni my poll numbers don't look very promising for a repeat for Best Avatar, can I count on you to get out the Michigan vote? ; P
Jan-09-12  Deus Ex Alekhina: I presume that if the Lions had gotten the 5th seed instead of the 6th, they would have scored more than 2 points against the NY Giants (but still would have lost). And, without Suh, on Dec 4, the Lions lost 31-17 to the Saints. With Suh in the lineup they lost 45-28 to the Saints. So much for being an "impact player"!
Jan-09-12  hangingenprise: i'll take the lions defensive line! they are young and extremely talented. the secondary needs to be upgraded and that will be fixed.
the lions are finally a team to be reckoned with.
Jan-09-12  hangingenprise: and i am not counting out the giants
at green bay. granted green bay are not the falcons, but 2 points??

go tebow!

Jan-09-12  King Death: < Deus Ex Alekhina: ...without Suh, on Dec 4, the Lions lost 31-17 to the Saints. With Suh in the lineup they lost 45-28 to the Saints. So much for being an "impact player"!>

I don't think this is the whole story. Like <Phony Benoni> and I discussed they have other problems on defense. Suh will be a great one but they need defensive backs and a healthy running back to control the clock so that they don't have to live and die on Stafford's arm. This will take time.

Jan-09-12  Jim Bartle: Good for Larkin. Another one who played his entire career for one team.

WannaBe: 1 - Believe it or not, the oddsmakers have Alabama favoured in this game, by a FG.

2 - Remember what happened in the SEC Championship game, and how LSU was out-played in the first half.

3 - Baylor and W. Virginia just scored again.

Jan-09-12  King Death: So it's 9-0 Tide at the half. A long way to go yet.
Jan-09-12  Jim Bartle: Unless these teams just have absolutely brilliant defenses, neither of these teams really looks all that good. They certainly don't look like USC and Texas a few years back when Reggie Bush and Vince Young were playing.
Jan-09-12  King Death: But <Jim>, those guys were on the take.

Does anybody else feel that the NCAA regulations are a farce? It seems like in theory players can't do anything without the school being written up but stuff goes on all the time.

WannaBe: 1 - Raiders will draft Jeremy Shelly as #1 pick in the next NFL draft.

2 - It's still 2 posession game, sure, LSU needs a TD + TD + 2 pts... But it's two posessions.
