Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Jan-08-12  Shams: Playoffs seem like a great time to try out the new overtime rules.
Jan-08-12  Travis Bickle: I hate this rule change of sudden death!! They always have to monkey around with something that's not broke!

WannaBe: New OT rule in the NFL:

If the first score is FG, the other team gets a chance to tie/win the game.

If the first score is a TD or safety, game over.

If the teams match FGs, next score wins.

Got that? Test Monday.

  WannaBe: Forgot this part,

If both teams have had posession of the ball, and did not score, next score wins.

Test Monday.

Jan-08-12  hangingenprise: tebow magic again and the defense
wow wow wow
Jan-08-12  Shams: <Like me and <Wannabe> said, that line on the Steelers/Broncos game is way off.>

That puts me 0-4 for the weekend against the spread.

WannaBe: <OhioChessFan> That line was way off, should have been Denver -6.5 =))
Jan-08-12  Shams: Time to call the spreads for next week!

@New England -7.5 vs. Denver
@Baltimore - 7 vs. Houston
@San Francisco +3 vs. New Orleans
@Green Bay - 8.5 vs. New York Giants

WannaBe: The freakin' Giants are a question wrapped in a puzzle and packed inside an enigma.

They can play well, e.g. at Dallas, and won. And turn around drop an absolute egg. e.g. at home against Washington.

If the Giants D shows up again, I'd take the points, but, it can also end up being a 35-14 GB blow-out if the D decides to take a rest...

The other 3 games, I'd take the home teams.

Phony Benoni: I think New England can spare the points. Denver won today largely because Tebow didn't make any big mistakes, and I don't see that happening two weeks in a row. They were having trouble stopping the crippled Steelers, so the Patriots should have little trouble.

Normally, Baltimore and Houston would be more of a field goal than a touchdown margin game. But the Ravens should eventually take advantage of the rookie quarterback for a couple of takeaways.

I'll definitely take the Saints, especially receiving points. I don't think the playing conditions will slow them unduly, as this is a team built more on precisiion than sheer spped and athleticism. They can be effective with running and a short passing game, and I don't think the 49ers can keep up.

I'll definitely take the Giants and points. They may not win, but they'll keep it close enough to avoid a blowout.

Phony Benoni: Only a Tebow receiver could win up with 204 yards receiving on <four> catches.
Jan-08-12  King Death: <WannaBe> Thanks for that link!

The thing with the Giants all year is that they've played up or down to the opponent. They almost lost to Arizona and Miami early (when those teams weren't playing well) and didn't play too well at home against the Eagles either.

Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> OK, that makes more sense. Doesn't feel like a field goal game, though; I'll give the points.
Jan-08-12  Shams: Are the real point spreads out? Guessing against my spreads is probably too easy.

WannaBe: <Shams> Yeah, today's paper already had the NO-SF, Hou-Bal odds, since the matchup was already determined yesterday.

Don't know much about the Den-NE, and NY-GB games...

Jan-08-12  Shams: Ok, here are the early lines.

1/14 New Orleans -3.5 @San Francisco / 47.5
1/14 @New England -13.5 Denver / 51
1/15 @Baltimore -8 Houston / 35.5
1/15 @Green Bay -8.5 NY Giants / 52

Jan-09-12  King Death: This is from CBS Sports:

<The Detroit Lions on Twitter. Too bad their best defense this weekend was here. After getting torched by New Orleans, cornerback Aaron Berry tweeted, "Y'all can go back to being Broke and Miserable ... now back to regular-scheduled programming." He later apologized...>

These people that Berry's mocking are the ones who make it possible for him to make a pile of money for playing a game. One day I hope he'll understand that, especially if the day ever comes that he's "Broke and Miserable." A lot of athletes wind up there, maybe somebody should educate this kid some.
