Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

OhioChessFan: <JB: Anybody see the lineman's interception and TD for Texas in the first game? Amazing catch. I doubt many receivers could have held onto that ball at such a short distance.>

I was sure that was a total fluke, but I just discovered he was a TE in college but converted to line after he kept growing. You know what? That was still a total fluke.

Jan-08-12  Jim Bartle: I agree. Hard to believe he really has such quick hands.

WannaBe: Looks like the G-men are heading to Green Bay, another team with good defence going up against a great offence...

Still got over 18 minutes left in the whole game.

Jan-08-12  Jim Bartle: Fortunately for the Saints the conditions at Candlestick Park are typically so ideal you can hardly tell it from an indoor stadium. They should feel right at home.
Jan-08-12  King Death: Was today the first time in NFL history a team scored exactly 2 points? I Googled and couldn't get a hit.

WannaBe: <King Death> Researching... I'll see what I can find.

Interesting to note, in 1980, SF trailed 35-7, and won in OT 38-35. Guess who they played against?

This is the second biggest come back in NFL history. Second to Bills-Houston.

Phony Benoni: <King Death> It doesn't seem to have happened before in the playoffs, judging by this page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_pl...

and the linked page of NFL Championship Game results.

The Lions once lost a playoff game 5-0, but the field goal came first:

Jan-08-12  Jim Bartle: That game when the 49ers came back from 35-7 down against New Orleans was the first time Joe Montana showed he could be a good quarterback, or "special" as they seem to say these days. He'd just taken over for Steve DeBerg a week or two earlier.

And I think that game left NO winless.

Phony Benoni: <JB> In those days, almost every game left New Orleans winless.

I remember switching the channel during this game, then making it back just in time to see the teams walk off the field for the second time. Quite a shocker.

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...

Story is that Montana was suffering from the flu, and was able to come back into the game after a bowl of chicken soup. So you had an Italian leading the Irish to victory thanks to a traditional Jewish remedy. How could they lose?

Jan-08-12  Travis Bickle: I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it! The Broncos leading The Steelers 14-6!?? I know The Steelers number 1 running back Mendenhall and Big Ben is hurting with that high ankle sprain, but this is unbelievable!

Phony Benoni: 17-6 now. Still a lot of time to go, but Denver can play tough defensively.
Jan-08-12  King Death: <Phony Benoni> The Cowboys-Lions game was one I remembered because it was strange but I didn't want to dig up bad memories for you. The last few years have given you enough.

Phony Benoni: <King Death> Not a problem. One becomes numb after more than 50 years.
Jan-08-12  hangingenprise: wow! tebow time at half time.
Jan-08-12  hangingenprise: <phony> your lions will get a better "spot" next year. shore up some secondary weakness and a little more of a running game and the lions will roar.
stafford and johnson can only get better.
Jan-08-12  hangingenprise: the raiders will still suck next year.
can't draft personal, can't keep a draft pick, can't win with the people they have.
Jan-08-12  hangingenprise: the pass johnson caught at the two yard line shows he is special, and the o-line must be good to allow
stafford passing time.
Jan-08-12  hangingenprise: last quarter and broncos ready to score again.
Jan-08-12  Shams: Calvin Johnson is not human.

WannaBe: Gonna be a great 4th quarter!
Jan-08-12  Travis Bickle: Turnover!! I had a feeling!
Jan-08-12  Jim Bartle: Oklahoma State has a receiver, Justin Blackmon, who plays like another Calvin Johnson, unstoppable.
