| Jan-07-12 | | Jim Bartle: Another advantage to the man-to-man defense vs. the zone: you can immediately tell if the other team has an extra man. |
| Jan-07-12 | | King Death: <Jim Bartle> Yup. It's kind of baffling that nobody caught on to that. |
| Jan-07-12 | | Jim Bartle: Sports Illustrated's baseball guy says only Larkin for the HOF this year, with Raines, Bagwell and McGriff close. He also thinks maybe Jack Morris is being held to too high a standard, and should be in. I think Raines should definitely go in, and McGriff shouldn't. In the story Verducci writes about steroids and Bagwell, though nothing was ever close to proven. Is this the standard line on Bagwell, that he used but was never caught? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20... |

| Jan-07-12 | | playground player: <Jim Bartle> Obviously Casey Stengel knew Eddie Robinson was going to have a good game, once Al Aber was lifted. The secret of being a successful manager is to be psychic. |

 | | WannaBe: http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/blog/_/... Great article, albeit, it only focused on one bowl, but similiar activities can surely be found at other BCS Bowls. (e.g. Fiesta in Ariz. got into biiiiiig trouble this year.) For those who do not know this, Bowl games are <NOT> NCAA sanctioned. You don't see the big blue NCAA logo on the field as you would for DI-AA, DII, or DIII, or NAIA play-offs. Or D-I basketball tournaments, where the big logo is very visible, and you get to see the 'Student-Athletes' commercial touting how they go into a profession other than sports. The winner Monday night, between LSU-'Bama will not hoist up a wooden plaque/trophy proclaiming them the National Champions. Instead, they will lift up the crystal football-shaped Sears trophy (If Sears fold, BCS will need a new sponsor.) The Division I football 'Champion' does not exist, in theory... Kinda like Bigfoot, or Loch Ness Monster, seen in pictures and videos only. Okay, everyone got that? Test Tuesday morning, after the football Championship game. |
| Jan-07-12 | | Jim Bartle: This BCS championship game seems to take place so long after the other games that, except for fans of the two teams, it becomes an afterthought. What I would do is set up a usual bowl setup, using conference tie-ins as often as possible (back to Pac 10 vs. Big 10 in the Rose Bowl again, for example). Then after all those games I'd choose two teams to play a week later for the official national championship. |
| Jan-07-12 | | Shams: <Jim Bartle> <Then after all those games I'd choose two teams to play a week later for the official national championship.> Jim, America doesn't want you to choose, it wants the teams to choose through a p------. |
| Jan-07-12 | | Jim Bartle: You think America can choose better than I can? You shove your p-word where it belongs. I see New Orleans plays Detroit tonight. Wonder what the combined passing yards will be? I say 700. Unless the conditions are really windy or it's snowing or something. |

 | | WannaBe: The Mercedes-Benz Superdome is expected to turn on the AC on full blast, so Detroit can feel right at home. Very nice hosts, these New Orleanians are. |
| Jan-07-12 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: The "upset-minded" Detroit Lions. Always wanted to use that phrase. Also wanted to use "St Louis Football Cardinals", but they skedaddled to AZ. |

 | | WannaBe: Does <OhioChessFan> root for Cincy or Clevy? Anybody know? |
| Jan-07-12 | | Jim Bartle: Deux Ex Alekhina: I vaguely remember back to the Chicago Cardinals, a pretty good team led by running back Ollie Matson in the 50s. The St. Louis Football Cardinals had a pretty good team for a number of years with Jim Hart at quarterback, Jackie Smith at TE, and Larry Wilson at safety. According to Sports Illustrated they were also a team torn by racial dissension around 1970, with wide receiver Sonny Randle supposed to be culprit number one. |

 | | WannaBe: Be interesting next week, when N.O. travels to S.F.
You have the league's #4 defence http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/t... (Number 1 in NFC) going against #1 offence in the league! http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/t... S.F. gave up 3 rushing TDs in 16 games http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/t... and 20 passing TDs (but also got 23 INTs) http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/t... N.O. have the #1 passing offence. Period http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/t... Scoring 46 TDs against 14 INTs (before tonight's game) The passing game for N.O. is 334 yards per game! We will see what happens when the immovable object meets the avalanche... |

 | | Phony Benoni: Right now I'd favor the Saints over the 49ers, but more because I prefer experienced teams in playoff situations. Houston goes to Balltimore, right? Gotta go with the Ravens there for the same reason. Unlike the Bengals, they won't make silly mistakes or quit if the going gets rough. |
| Jan-07-12 | | King Death: <Jim Bartle> A point <Phony Benoni> brought up a little while ago on Alan Trammell was that he didn't really have one outstanding skill, unlike Ozzie Smith. It seems like we can say the same thing about Barry Larkin and Tim Raines. Raines was also hurt by playing his best seasons when both Molitor and Rickey Henderson were in their primes. If his career had started 10 years earlier, he'd have made it in way before now. |
| Jan-08-12 | | Jim Bartle: I don't see the 49ers keeping up with New Orleans. They won't score much, and won't be able to stop the Saints completely, maybe not slow them down much t all. |

 | | OhioChessFan: The Bengals constantly overran plays on defense. It always blows me away how often misdirection works. I saw it repeatedly in the Orange Bowl this week and saw it over and over yesterday. How hard is it to tell a person with contain responsibility to stay home? "Look, you're 10 yards behind the play, you are <not> going to make the tackle anyway. Maintain your responsibility." Of course the announcers touted how good the running backs were. Back in the day, Chris Perry had a huge game against Ohio State his senior year. There were about 5 plays where Perry ran into the middle of the line, was stopped, the entire defense collapsed around him, and he bounced outside for a big gain. That game was the primary reason the Bengals drafted him in the first round. A game where he put up big numbers because of fundamentally poor defense. Perry was basically a first round bust, though injuries played a part in it. |

 | | OhioChessFan: I agree <JB> SanFran has seemed to me all year to be less than their numbers. However, a NO kind of offense <can> have a really bad day, and you never know when a pass oriented team might give up some fluke interceptions. |
| Jan-08-12 | | Jim Bartle: Detroit dropped a couple of interceptions yesterday, including one which would have been taken back for a TD. Plus there was the quick whistle on Brees' forward fumble which cost the Lions an easy TD. During the second half it looked as if NO was going to win no matter what; the Detroit offense was good to stay in it. That Johnson sure is a tough receiver. Anybody see the lineman's interception and TD for Texas in the first game? Amazing catch. I doubt many receivers could have held onto that ball at such a short distance. |

 | | WannaBe: Let's examine the 3 losses N.O. had in the regular season, game 1, Thursday night season kick-off game, 42-34 at Green Bay, no shame there. Second loss, week 6 @ Tampa Bay 26-20, could have won that game, just one touch down. Third loss, week 8 @ St. Luis, 31-21. The losses to T.B. and St.L. are head-scratchers. Wonder if the team played down to their opposition, or what on earth happened. |
