Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: I'm sure Jerry Jones will come to his senses some day, realize he's not Al Davis, and hire a real General Manager. After all, Matt Millen is available.
Jan-05-12  King Death: <Phony Benoni> Sure Millen will get the job done. That would be two franchises he'd have ruined on his resume. If he followed the pattern in Detroit with another NFL team dumb enough to hire him, they'd get a wide receiver who could play sooner or later. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile.

It really blows my mind what Millen did to your Lions. They were a good team, hired him then went straight down the tubes.

Jan-05-12  Jim Bartle: Jones won crushing victories in the Super Bowl his fourth and fifth year as the owner, so he must have decided he was the genius. Jimmy Johnson quit/got fired largely because Jones wanted so much of the credit.

They did win a third championship two years later under Barry Switzer (with Johnson's players), but then they sank into mediocrity.

Jan-05-12  King Death: Well, there had to be somebody in Charger Land to take the hit since the coach and GM stayed aboard. Of course one of them had 2 years left on his contract and the other 3 and Dean Spanos didn't want to be on the hook for all of it and get nothing.

http://eye-on-football.blogs.cbsspo...

Somehow I think that the only stranger thing happening so far is Lovie Smith keeping his job with the Bears while everybody else is getting canned or resigning.

Phony Benoni: <King Death> Whew! For a minute there I thought they had fired the cheerleaders.
Jan-05-12  Shams: I still cannot believe Norv Turner has a job. The guy is a good OC but come on, he's .500 with a Philip Rivers team over how many years?

<For a minute there I thought they had fired the cheerleaders.>

Finding a new cheer squad that looks like the old one could prove difficult in Southern California.

Jan-05-12  Travis Bickle: The Chicago Bears because of the McCaskey families frugality, (CHEAPNESS), always find a way to screw things up! Because Lovie Dovie has another year on his contract they won't fire the sedate mute! Everybody in Chicago is talking Bill Polian, but GM's of that calibre want to bring in their own guys not somebody's leftovers.

Phony Benoni: Want to know why I'm a Lions fan? Outside of being a lifelong resident if the Detroit area? Here's today's quote from coach Jim Schwartz, about the Saints' staggering offensive statistics:

<"I think we need to take more of a chess approach. Nobody cares in chess how many pawns you give up or if you sacrifice your queen. They care about if you win the game, whether you get checkmate or not. And I think that's the only thing that’s important, not stats.">

Well, what's he supposed to say?

Phony Benoni: Can you blame him? After 1951, everybody wanted to hit against Ralph Branca.
Jan-07-12  King Death: <Phony Benoni> That would have been immoral.

Not that I'm a big fan of college basketball, but I just read this story about a game. http://eye-on-college-basketball.bl...

The part that got me was the follow up this morning though. The losing coach got bounced: http://eye-on-college-basketball.bl...

Who knows if there was any connection but the timing makes me wonder.

Phony Benoni: <King Death> Maybe it was the referees' responsibility to count the players, but that doesn't excuse the Western Kentucky coaches from not noticing and protesting. Then the coach just shrugs his shoulders and shifts blame afterward?

It sounds like there were issues before the game, and this was a convenient final straw.

Jan-07-12  King Death: <Phony Benoni> Yes it does. They're a young team and aren't going anywhere this season. Then came this to cap off a disappointing game and it was time to swing the ax. It sounds more like the kind of thing that would happen in a high prfile program, not this one in a small conference.
