Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: Heads are rolling in the coaching ranks... Let the fun begin!
Jan-02-12  hangingenprise: ugliest play off game: steel curtain-orange crush and they are going to get crushed. the g-men will take care of business in the meadow land plucking the falcons. lions are not ready for prime time and the saints will march them out. the tough pick is cincy-texans which whoever has the ball last will win.
Jan-02-12  hangingenprise: saders: typical raiders trading their first round and third round picks. o well, they would blow the picks on some talent that won't be there. mc'fadden is looking like a bust. great runner but can't stay healthy. fifth pick overall and looks like another bust.
doah marcus replaces ryan as the over all number 1 to go down the toliet. and the strangest thing is that when lane kiffin was the head coach he did not want marcus but al davis fired kiffin and drafted marcus!

Bad weekend for UCLA sports, football team lost Illinois, and Bball team got beat by Cal & Stanford. =(

Someone tell <jim bartle> that the Stanford-OK. State game can be seen on espn3.com if he can't get regular espn on TV where he is at.

WannaBe: Twice, today, Pac-12 teams are involved in a 'end zone' play. Where the receiver/kick-off returner, is almost out of the endzone after catching the ball.

Ducks receiver had his foot on the 'zero yard line' but took a knee, and Stanford kid had to be 'tackled' by his own teammate, to prevent the runner from taking the ball out of the end-zone.

Jan-03-12  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony! I nominated you for two Caissars!! Don't forget to nominate me for Best Avatar! ; P

Phony Benoni: <Travis> I never participate in the Caissar voting or nomination process, but since you've already been nominated for Best Avatar I'm off the hook there.

And I fully agree with <JessicaFischerQueen> for Best Historian. I may even break my longstanding practice and vote for her myself.

Jan-03-12  King Death: The Cooperstown Express is in and you better get on!

These 5 players get my vote: Tim Raines, Alan Trammell, Barry Larkin, Jeff Bagwell, and Dale Murphy.

OhioChessFan: <Wabbit: Interesting ending to the Rose Bowl, why Wisc. tried to spike the ball instead of running a play. Hail Mary, or lateral... >

Stupid decision. And for the life of me, I don't know why teams just can't instruct the center to snap the ball at the whistle instead of making the QB call for it.

Phony Benoni: I didn't see the play, but if they didn't have time to spike the ball then they would have had to go with any play they called, regardless of defensive alignment. It would have been sheer desperation and more likely than not a disaster

Again, without having seen it I would have gone for the spike. But <OCF> is surely right that they could have executed it more efficiently. If an NBA player can catch the ball, fake, jump and shoot in 1.3 seconds, a quarterback should be able to spike the ball in two unless he's really tall or the clock was running on Pacific Time.

I didn't see the play in question so I have nothing to say about that. As far as the point <OCF> brings up, it seems to make more sense.

All of CG.com's post is not even the weight of a tiny seed, much less my posts.

All of my posts are probably a micro-micro-micro-micro-micro-micron of a millionth of a nanogram.

There, aren't you glad you asked?! :-)

Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> You really laid yourself open for a comeback there. Something along the lines of asking for their weight, not their worth. But I'm still imbued with Holiday Spirit, and will let it pass.

At least until the Caissar voting is over. I do want to win Mr. Congeniality this year.

WannaBe: The head of the ball touched the ground, plus he did not have posession, and on top of that, he was out of bounds.

That is what I saw... Don't know what the review will determine.

(The kicker missed the FG attempt after the play was over-turned)
