Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: <jfq> Game editors are allowed to add or change round numbers, dates and years. "Event" and "Site" will be standardized automatically when the collection is used as the basis for a Historical Tournament page, so you don't need to worry about them at this point.

jessicafischerqueen: <Phony Benoni> thanks very much for that additional useful information. I feel very happy today because you showed the links to your four part "State of the Union" document, which will allow me to orient my activities (mainly whining) in a more professional manner.

Amazing, Air Force Academy did not throw a single pass. Did not put the ball in the air, never gone deep and air'n it out, did not put any air under the....

Oh, never mind.

But it doth begat the question, what was the last NCAA Division-I team to not throw or attempt a single passing play?

Nov-22-12  Jim Bartle: What's ironic is that it's the <Air> Force Academy, which you would think would put the ball in the air.

A number of years ago they had a really good team wiht an option quarterback named Dee Dower. Hardly threw back then, either. I think theyy were ranked, and were in a different class from Army and Navy.

WannaBe: High scoring first half, see if the Lions can keep it going against Houston in the second half. =)

Happy Gobble-Gobble Day, everyone!

Phony Benoni: What can I say? The Lions had their chances. Good teams win games like that, bad teams don't.

But that no-replay rule has to be scratched. "Getting it right" should take priority over dubious logic.

Nov-22-12  hangingenprise: phony: since it is a big sales day tomorrow, you can get a super deluxe deal on a new television. i don't think they have a warranty for throwing a brick or throwing your old television out a second story window.
Nov-22-12  hangingenprise: of course that was a bogus call non call by the non replacement referees. you can't spot a team like the texans 7 pts.
Nov-22-12  Jim Bartle: I couldn't watch the game, just now reading about it. So as far as I can figure it out, a Texas guy ran for an 80-yard TD, but was actually down at the 50.

Detroit coach threw his flag, which for some reason was not permitted because the play was going to be reviewed anyway. I guess all TDs are automatically reviewed today. But because he threw the flag the play couldn't be reviewed.

That's got to be the worst rule ever.

WannaBe: Glorious and Beautiful Day for football. Autumn is in the air, sunny and bright.

(Unlike that USF-Cin game, looking at it last night made me feel cold.)

Nov-24-12  Jim Bartle: What's the prediction for Stanford-UCLA?

Rose Bowl is a great place to watch football. There's no track and the seats are close to the field, though the slope of the stands is quite gentle, so the upper seats are bit farther from the field.

WannaBe: And Ohio State remains undefeated, alas, this was their last game of this season.

<JB> I sat about 10 rows (from the top) for the Neb-UCLA game, it did not seem to be that far, I was able to watch the action very nicely. =)

Either way, if Oregon State beats U of O, we get to play Stanford again, for the Pac-12 Championship. Currently Ducks are ahead, 6-0.

Nov-24-12  Jim Bartle: As I said, the Rose Bowl is a great traditional stadium. Its design is different from most others in that the stands are not very steep.

I've only seen two games there: Stanford vs. Ohio State 1971, and Stanford vs. Michigan 1972. Stanford didn't get back to the Rose Bowl (except to play UCLA) for another 28 years. And that includes the Elway years.

WannaBe: Not lookin' too good for the Beavers, down 17 pts, 4th qtr just about to start...

Theoretically, UCLA can end the season on a three-game losing streak, Stanford, Oregon, and TBA.

WannaBe: Tree draws first blood, 7-0, good long drive, took almost 5 minutes off the clock.

WannaBe: Now that Ducks have won, it clears up the picture.

1. If Stanford wins, next Friday will be a rematch between UCLA-Stanford at Palo Alto.

2. Else, UCLA goes to Eugene.

Either way, UCLA will not be at home next Friday night. Tough crowd environment, difficult place to play.

I remember back in '90 I visited a friend at Mills College in Oakland, and went to UCLA-Stanford game, endzone benches have splinters, and we got our behind kicked, left and right, all afternoon.

Nov-24-12  Jim Bartle: Wannabe: I loved the old Stanford Stadium, splinters and all. They played a Super Bowl there (SF 38, Miami 16).

But they completely refurbished the stadium, modernized it, and reduced capacity from 85,000 to around 50,000.

WannaBe: Momentum is all with Stanford, even after UCLA forced 3 three-and-outs. Not able to capitalize on anything for the Bruins. =(

WannaBe: Got a field goal, and a stop to end the first half, we'll get the ball to start the second half.

USC is starting too, watch my head explode, as I dislike both 'SC & ND the same.
