Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: Lost by 3... bad INT in the game, which was the only turn over in the game, I think...
Dec-01-12  Shams: I'm surprised that this "Haystacks Calhoun" fella reached 600 pounds, and also lived to be 65. He must have been doing something right. Maybe he secretly followed the Okinawa diet.
Dec-01-12  Jim Bartle: From what I could tell in the 60s, the weights of a lot of the wrestlers were seriously exaggerated, though I don't know if that was true of Calhoun.
Dec-01-12  playground player: <Jim Bartle>, <Shams> I had the opportunity of seeing Haystacks Calhoun in person, up close--and whether he actually weighed 600 pounds or not, he was an enormous man.

He was outweighed by Happy Humphrey, who was billed at 700 pounds. Interestingly enough, Calhoun worried about Humphrey and used to plead with him to lose weight.

Whatever his weight really was--why do we just jump to the conclusion that pro wrestling would exaggerate about its personnel?--Haystacks was also tremendously strong. He used to go on TV, performing feats of strength. Supposedly he got his nickname from his ability to pitch heavy haystacks up to the loft.

Dec-01-12  Jim Bartle: Anybody see what happened with the KC Chiefs today? Incredible.

A linebacker shot his girlfriend at home, drove to the practice field and shot himself in front of the coach and GM. That's two huge tragedies for the Chiefs, after Derrick Thomas.

Dec-01-12  Travis Bickle: That's a tragedy for The NFL also.

WannaBe: I had Detroit, Chicago, Green Bay to win their games at home, in cold(er) climate than the visiting team...

Seattle does not play well on the road, (see game @ Miami) until today. Against a good Bears team. Grrrr.

Indy with a rookie QB was suppose to fold under pressure, guess I am now sold on A. Luck. If nothing else, it was an exciting game, fans got their moneys worth.

(This, coming after Stanford beat UCLA in a period of 6 days. Grrrr!!)

Of course, everyone in the pool took the 4th and 9ers, another OT game vs. Lambs.

Dec-02-12  Mrs. Alekhine: <Phony Benoni> I was hoping you might help me by posting the round-by round pairings for these two tournaments?

<Triberg A> (Alekhine, Brinckmann, Bogoljubov, Samisch, Selezniev)

<Triberg B> (Rubinstein, Spielmann, Bogoljubow, Selezniev)

I have the crosstable for <Triberg A>, but not for <Triberg B>.

Would you please post me the crosstable for <Triberg B>, or if it's online, give me the link? I looked for it but couldn't find it online.

I'd be very grateful if you would help me with this.

After all, we are the two-time defending Pac-12 South Champion. (Thanks to USC :-))

Dec-03-12  Mrs. Alekhine: Hello! Ok when <Margate 1938> gets promoted I'll go to the secret page and write an intro for it. I have two books with some information on it.

WannaBe: Flakers lost, at home, again! Bring back Coach Brown.
Dec-03-12  Jim Bartle: Not only that, they lost to Miami, the team that Dwight Howard corroded from within before leaving.
Dec-03-12  Jim Bartle: oops, that should be Orlando, not Miami.

On a related note, LeBron is SI Sportsman of the year. Deserved in most ways, you still have to ignore the way he left Cleveland to think this is right.

Miami now has two NBA titles, and Sportsman both times, after Wadw in 2006, when Federer was the clear best choice.

Dec-04-12  Mrs. Alekhine: Hello!

Introduction to Margate (1938) as promised.

I'd appreciate any feedback, particularly on exactly the best method to list sources. I think it's better to print "Source:" or "Sources:", so I've changed this intro as well- St. Petersburg Quadrangular (1913).

However, mainly I want to do a consistent format for all of the tournaments I help edit.

I'll defer to your advice on exactly how to format sources. Ideally, we should have one standard method to list sources in every single Tournament Collection.

Dec-05-12  Mrs. Alekhine: Hello!

I will write the <Kemeri 1937> introduction this weekend. I have a biography of <Vladimirs Petrovs> I want to consult, but I won't be able to get ahold of the book until tomorrow.

Dec-06-12  Jim Bartle: Some pretty great photos on this Sports Illustrated page, especially the first few and the Mazeroski one at the bottom:

Dec-06-12  Mrs. Alekhine: Good Morning.

Sadly, I will not have access to my <Petrovs> biography until Monday night. I thought it was at work, but it isn't, which means it is at Richard's house. I won't be seeing him until Monday night, so there'll be a brief delay on writing the bio for Kemeri (1937)

  jessicafischerqueen: Good Evening.

Ok as you probably saw, I put a list of English and German promoted tournaments over in the BioBistro.

I may have missed a few, but it seems that "we" favor (ENG) but are split right down the middle on (GER) and (DEU).

So I've just nominated four English tournaments using the (ENG) code. I hope nobody votes against them based on the (ENG) code.

With regard to Game Collection: London International Chess Congress, 1932, I'd like to write the intro for this, since I have good sources for this one, and the books are actually in my house. So I could write this intro on the weekend.

I propose that we settle (DEU) vs (GER).

My first choice would be to not use country codes anymore.

My second choice would be to allow admins to use (GER) or (DEU) as is their personal preference.

As I mentioned a few days ago, not using country codes would benefit tournaments held in cities that changed hands a lot. For example, in reality, from 1939-1945 all cities in Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Austria. were in fact in (GER-DEU). From 1941-1944 Paris was in (GER-DEU).

And there are other historical examples outside of World War II. Think of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and tournaments in that vast region prior to 1918.

jessicafischerqueen: Oh and thanks very much for putting the crosstable in Kemeri (1937)!

Thanks to <crawfb5> and you I know how to do this now, but I'm really happy you did it for <Kemeri>.

It may not seem like it all the time, but I'm grateful for your teaching and seemingly endless patience with me.
