Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Dec-19-12  Jim Bartle: Tebow has played badly. Maybe he feels the pressure, given his few chances and the huge spotlight he's under.

I think the Jets got him just to run a few plays a game, and never figured him for a regular qb. And they never figured Sanchez would be so bad.

Speaking of Sanchez, USC qbs haven't had much luck in the NFL lately: Sanchez, Palmer, Leinart.

WannaBe: See where Matt Barkely ends up...
Dec-20-12  Shams: I don't think Rex Ryan ever wanted Tebow in the first place. The decision was made higher up, likely at the ownership level. They wanted Tebow partly for football reasons, and partly because let's face it, this team loves to make headlines. They front office essentially said to Ryan, "here he is-- figure out how to use him." But they were asking for trouble with such an idiosyncratic player.

The Jets will probably be the first team to do HBO's "Hard Knocks" for a second time...the network has been having a hard time getting franchises to open their doors for training camp. Most franchises don't want a circus, but the Jets aren't like most franchises.

And Tebow definitely comes with his own circus. It's bad juju when the reporters are clustering around the backup QB's locker and not the starter's. A disciplined franchise would not allow that to happen. The Jets are a mess and Tebow will be well rid of them.

I can't remember who the player was, but one year Mike Holmgren was overruled on a roster spot by the GM. So the Walrus just benched the GM's guy for the whole year, he never saw the field.

Phony Benoni: <Shams> I was wondering if Ryan had wanted Tebow. Certainly his actions show he didn't.

Tebow had success last year thanks to a strong defense and some inspirational leadership qualities; by all accounts, he is not a good quarterback technically. If Ryan recognized that and refused to bow to ownership and fan pressure, good for him.

And we must take note that last year, with Tebow, the Broncos barely snuck into the playoffs. This year with Peyton Manning they are one of the top teams in the league.

I agree. There had to be a disconnect between the front office and Ryan. That is the fault of the front office. However, as bad as Sanchez was, the subequent blame has to be pinned on Ryan, for not even <trying> Tebow. He could hardly have been worse.

Dec-20-12  playground player: <Esteemed Colleagues> Your comments shed light on this ridiculous situation.

I don't know how bad Tebow could be, if he won the Heisman Trophy? It was like all of a sudden, all these pundits discovered that he stinks. How much worse could he be than Joe Kapp?

But a disconnect between the coach and a publicity-happy front office--now that's something we've all seen before. Billy Martin and Reggie Jackson springs immediately to mind.

Dec-20-12  Jim Bartle: PP: Running quarterbacks in college, no matter how good, rarely make it in the pros, at least as qbs. A fair number make it at other positions.

Eric Crouch, Tommy Frazier, Gary Beban, James Street, etc. we're really great in college. But that type just doesn't! Survive in the pros unless the guy is also a great passer.

Dec-20-12  hms123: <Jim> Don't forget <Tom Matte> of the Baltimore Colts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Ma...

<Late in the 1965 season, Matte also memorably filled in as an emergency quarterback when Colts QBs Johnny Unitas and Gary Cuozzo went down with season-ending injuries in consecutive home losses to the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers, respectively. For the Colts' regular-season finale (a 20-17 win) against the Los Angeles Rams and the following weekend's one-game playoff at Green Bay (a 13-10 overtime loss resulting from a missed Packer field goal that was erroneously ruled good), Colts head coach Don Shula put a list of plays on a wristband that Matte wore. The wristband is now on display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.>

See? I can say something nice about somebody, if I really put my mind to it.

Dec-23-12  waustad: Thanks for your reply in the bistro. After posting that I suspected that I probably had the wrong forum. What I was most worried about was having a script generate duplicate players with 'w' instead of 'v' and such. I note that, for example, Artur Yusupov is now spelled Jussopow on the FIDE site. http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?... I tried finding an opponent of Eva Moser's from the Frauenbundesliga and couldn't find it here until I went to the FIDE site and looked for something similar from the top women in the appropriate country to figure out how FIDE spells her name. There really is no easy fix.

Phony Benoni: <waustad> All we can do is check carefully and send in correction slips if something goes awry.

It would be nice if we had a cross-reference structure in which keying "Jussopow" would automatically route one to the "Yusupov" page. Something like the ones used in Wikipedia, Google, or a library catalog.

WannaBe: Well, the 6 invitee to the post-season for AFC is all set, it's just a matter of who gets to seat where at the big table that's left to figure out.

One more week before the regular season ends.

Dec-23-12  Jim Bartle: Yeah, but how about those NFC East teams fighting for playoff spots? NY and Dallas really stepped up, Giants getting destroyed the second straight week, and dallas lost in OT to NO.

WannaBe: If 'Skins beat Cowgirls at home next week, they will win the NFC East! How about that?! Who'd thunk it at week 1??

Chicago needs to win at Detroit, and hope Green Bay beats Viqueens in Minnesota, but Packers may rest starters, if they don't want to chase for the 2-seed in NFC.

NFC may have up to 5 teams with 9-7 record after next week, and my head will explode if I try to understand/explain the tie-break scenarios...

Oy Vey!!

WannaBe: Okay, you want to talk about 'fun'?! Here it is:

Next week, if!!!

Dallas beats Washington in D.C., Giants win at home against Philly, top 3 teams would 9-7. One team would win the Division, which would mean Washington or Dallas, both 4-2 in Division play, after that, I don't know what the second tier tie-break is. Giants have a crappy 3-3 in Division play.

Seattle loses tonight to San Francisco, and next week to the Rams, they are 9-7. Minnesota loses at home to Green Bay, Chicago loses at Detroit. That means Seattle, Minnesota, Chicago, Dallas/Washington, Giants will all be 9-7. And the Wild Card tie-break gets interesting.

We may need to recount hanging chads and the Supreme Court to decide this one. Fun, aye?!

mistermac: I come from Australia, and for some reason I got interested in American Football. Someone called it Chess on steroids once. But I am sure none of those lads are on them, they just eat what Mum cooks them. The NFC situation, as you all say, is getting a bit complicated, as contrasted with the AFC.

I happily know very little of the subtleties of the game, so in order to help me figure out who would win in the first few years of my interest in the game was to allot an ELO rating to the teams. I became an expert overnight! None of this maze of statistics for me.

But, I must say the rules for deciding the tie breaks are mind boggling.

But, Seattle could well beat the 7^2 ers and much of the complications will have vanished.

Do not fancy NYG's or Dallas' chances
much now.

For the record I am a nominal GBP supporter, but i will change my allegiance to the highest bidder!
