 | | OhioChessFan: I am not on board with losing the draft pick. I think he did it intentionally. As for watching the Jumbtron live, I agree totally. I've seen people admiring themsleves as they run. I would hate to see some competitive advantage happen because a player got a view they couldn't see on the field. Unlikely, but still. As an OSU fan, I am sort of hoping they don't end up playing Florida State. I think they'll get killed. I think they could have outscored Alabama. OSU's mediocre defense this year was revealed yesterday in spades. I am not sure on the 2 point conversion attempt, but Michigan had been unable to stop the run all day, so it was a reasonable move. |
| Dec-01-13 | | Jim Bartle: That 2-point conversion try was gutsy, but I think you're right. Michigan just couldn't stop the OSU running attack. That guy Hyde is a tank, and Miller is shifty. I also think the Michigan coach was thinking of a possible legendary victory with the two-pointer. But what a terrible play by the Michigan QB. |
Dec-01-13
 | | OhioChessFan: Yes, that was a panic throw. He wasn't under pressure, and the receivers weren't really into their routes yet. |
Dec-01-13
 | | Phony Benoni: Opinion up here has been unanimous supporting the two-point try.. Much like that Boise State - Oklahoma game several years ago: the inferior team would rather take their one shot now. Did you notice how Auburn didn't go for two in a similar situation against Alabama? A different dynamic there; the two teams were much more closely matched. |
| Dec-01-13 | | Jim Bartle: That Boise State statue of liberty play was a classic. So now it's OSU vs. Michigan St., right?
I really hate these conference championship games, if they can match two teams for a second time in a season. In particular, Stanford already beat Arizona State, but now they have to play them again to get to the Rose Bowl. |
Dec-01-13
 | | Phony Benoni: Well, Michigan State hasn't played OSU this year, so that's all right. MSU and Ohio State actually have a history of close games. It seems like the Buckeyes tend to underestimate the "Little Brothers". That won't happn this time. Michigan State has a great defense statistically, but they haven't played anybody the califber of Ohio State. The game vs. Michigan was the kind of dominating performance they can have. Offensively they're a small ball team: strong running game, Freshman quarterback who is essentially a game manager. They've put up 40 against some really dreadful defenses, but they can't keep up with OSU in a shootout. It could be decided early. If OSU goes up a couple of touchdowns quickly, it will likely be over. |
| Dec-01-13 | | Jim Bartle: I still remember the great Michigan State-Notre Dame game in 1966, both undefeated and the winner to be named national champs. ND had the ball in the last minute with the game tied, and just ran out the clock, didn't try to score. ND didn't go to bowl games back then, and MSU went to the Rose Bowl, where they lost to UCLA in the biggest Rose upset ever. |
| Dec-02-13 | | technical draw: I am an OSU fan since late sixties and early seventies during my stay in Columbus and OSU. Columbus is a football city. The Buckeyes, the Browns and the Bengals are all cheered in that big city with a small city feeling. |
| Dec-02-13 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: Woody Hayes was "loved" on all the other Big Ten campuses. |
| Dec-02-13 | | Jim Bartle: Loved on the West Coast, too. Starting in 1970 Hayes and Schembechler lost 10 of 11 Rose Bowls against the Pac-8 champion. Out west they'd discovered the forward pass. OSU and Michigan pass these days, with better results. |
Dec-02-13
 | | WannaBe: Pac-8?! 8?? I remember the 6-pac(k)! Now we are 12-pac(k) =)) |
Dec-02-13
 | | Phony Benoni: Ah, yes. The Pac-8. Washington played Washington State. Oregon played Oregon State. Cal played Stanford. UCLA played USC. The rest of the games didn't matter, except for deciding the winner of the Rose Bowl. |

 | | WannaBe: D. Fister got traded?! I think Detroit will regret this. |
Dec-03-13
 | | Phony Benoni: It's a very unpopular move at the moment. For a front-line starter, they got a utility player and two pitching prospects. Drew Smyly, who relieved this year, will take over the starting sport with every expectation of doing well. Otherwise, this can only be justified as freeing up some more salary for a big move elsewhere. |

| Dec-03-13 | | Alien Math: Detroit eligible for bankruptcy protection: U.S. judge (Reuters) - Detroit is eligible for the biggest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history because the city is broke and negotiations with its thousands of creditors were unfeasible, a federal judge said on Tuesday in a wide-ranging ruling that also said the city could cut retiree pensions. In some respects the Detroit Institute of Arts has become symbolic of the costs of allowing Detroit to fall into bankruptcy. Last week, a group of the largest creditors asked Rhodes to order an independent valuation of the museum's 66,000-piece collection. One of the city's most prized cultural assets, the museum includes paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Henri Matisse, an original cast of Auguste Rodin's "The Thinker," and a fresco mural by Mexican artist Diego Rivera. Christie's has not yet issued its valuation of the museum's collection. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013... |
| Dec-03-13 | | Shams: <Alien Math> Thanks, that's very interesting. Obviously not ideal but as we say, desperate times call for desperate measures. Anthony Bourdain went to Detroit in his great season-ending episode of CNN's _Parts Unknown_ a couple weeks ago. <[A]n original cast of Auguste Rodin's "The Thinker"> I believe there were twelve of these. One of them stands in the courtyard of my favorite San Francisco art museum, the Legion of Honor in the Presidio. |
| Dec-03-13 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: Detroit, despite the declining economic base, does have a world-class art institute, which is supported by wealthy patrons of the arts living in Detroit's northern suburbs. Mostly auto executives, remember the Big Three auto companies are all near Detroit. |

 | | Phony Benoni: The DIA argument has been going on for months now. It reminds me of one of those British comedies where the Noble Family has fallen on hard times, but refuses to admit it and tries to maintain their former status. Every measure meant to save Detroit money is met by resistance and lawsuits by those whoe will lose something. The pensioners are already talking the US Supreme Court. The investors and bondholders are ready to fight for their share, or more. The DIA Lovers are raising public outcry from enraged citizens who probably never go near the place but aren't willing to give up what is "theirs". You want a successful career in Detroit? There's only one: "We cannoot play the firemen,
We cannot pay the cops;
We cannot pay the teachers
And the pensions gotta stop;
We can't turn on the streetlights
Or give help of any sort,
But there's meney for the lawyers
So we'll see you all in court." |

 | | WannaBe: Upset tonight, Pistons won at Miami!! |
| Dec-04-13 | | Jim Bartle: I still like watching old games to see what's changed. Here's a Reds-Cubs game from 1965: --Pitchers didn't have to pause while going to the stretch. Maloney didn't pause at all with Santo on first. --Two outs, two on, tie score, bottom of the ninth, Cubs pitcher Larry Jackson still came up to bat. --Check-swing rule must have been more liberal. Balls were called which certainly would be strikes today. Of course no checking with the base umpires. --Strike zone went much higher, of course.
--No pitch count kept, so the announcer was guessing how many Maloney had thrown. An inning later someone had made the count and the announcer said Maloney had thrown 177 pitches. --Less than two minutes between innings. No TV replays. --Cincinnati played its all-Oakland outfield: Harper, Pinson, Robinson. Announcer casually announced Reds batters: "Rose, Pinson, Robinson coming up this inning." Not bad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRCL... |

 | | Phony Benoni: The world is going crazy. I'm in sixth place in the current ChessBookie standings with $3,037, and didn't t any advances from the Loanshark or tips from <Technical Draw>. Usually I'm broke after the first day of betting, and can relax for the rest of the session. Now the pressure is on, and I can't stand it. I also can't resist betting, which is one reason why I never gamble in real life. Tomorrow, everything should be back to normal. Egypt is due for a win over Russia, right? |
| Dec-04-13 | | Jim Bartle: Tigers signed Joe Nathan as closer. Looks like a good move. Giants foolishly traded him years ago, then he became a star. |
Dec-04-13
 | | Phony Benoni: Nathan looks good, but I feel a bit shaky about a 39-year-old closer. However, the best part of the signing is that he won't be pitching against the Tigers--at least, not for the other team. He's always killed us. |
Dec-04-13
 | | WannaBe: Egypt will win, regardless of the 5,000,000,000,000-1 odd. You have <technical draw>'s word on it. |
