Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: <YouRang> Don't bet on Verlander winning another Cy Young. Right now, he is possibly the fifth-best starter on the Tigers, and this decline has been I evidence since his Cy Young year.

By the way, the Tigers, who were celebrating the 30th anniversary of the 1984 champions, won last night's game with a walk-off grand slam. Here's what happened when they celebrated the 20th anniversary:

Phony Benoni: I don't think anyone's mentioned it, but you must have seen this play:

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb...

Here's the rule (7.08):

"Any runner is out when --

(a) (1) He runs more than three feet away from his base path to avoid being tagged .... <A runner's base path is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely> ..."

Note that this says nothing about "going on the grass". The base path is determined by the position of the tag attempt, not an imaginary fixed line on the field, and In the umpires' judgment the runner was within the three foot limit. Looking at the replay with that in mind, I think they got it right.

So relax, Travis. I found your Boots Randolph link:

Jul-01-14  Jim Bartle: Unit was obvious, Lincecum just threw his second no- hitter last week, and I sort of guessed on Halladay.

Two greats, two very goods.

Jul-01-14  Jim Bartle: On the rundown, the guy who missed the tag when he went down on the grass pulled a Brainlauch, arguing the play instead of throwing to third. He probably still had time.

Phony Benoni: <JB> Agreed; he probably thought going on the grass was an automatic out. In any event, great scrambling by the runner.

WannaBe: Porcello had a great game today. CG shutout, 4H, and only 95 pitches!! (When Linceceum got pulled during his almost no-no, he was at 95 after 5 innings)...

A Stanford pitcher not named Mussina won a game?

The names of the visiting team's first two batters rhyme?

Each of the first six hitters got exactly one hit?

Trying to figure out why Reuss was taken out after five batters.

Okay, I'll take your word for it. I'll revise my prediction:

The next guy to join the select group of pitchers with <multiple Cy Young> and <multiple no hitters> will be Clayton Kershaw.

Phony Benoni: Gibson's non-appearance is well-known. Tudor surprised me a bit, what with that 1985 year (21-8, 10 shutouts). But he actually started the year 1-7 before winning 20 of his last 21, and was only 10-7 at the break.

Chavez and Salmon don't surprise me at all. Maybe good, but nowhere near the best even on their own teams. As for Tovar, which position do you select him for?

Phony Benoni: The Tampa Bay announcers tonight seemed to think it interesting that the Rays' lineup, counting the DH as "0", had the position numbers "8675309", and that the lead-off hitter was "Jennings".

Phony Benoni: OK, here's a weird one. The umpire says a runner was not tagged. The <hitting> team asks for a review, and gets the call reversed!
