 | | Phony Benoni: <YouRang> Don't bet on Verlander winning another Cy Young. Right now, he is possibly the fifth-best starter on the Tigers, and this decline has been I evidence since his Cy Young year. By the way, the Tigers, who were celebrating the 30th anniversary of the 1984 champions, won last night's game with a walk-off grand slam. Here's what happened when they celebrated the 20th anniversary: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... Travis, a little Twilight Zone music please. |

 | | Phony Benoni: I don't think anyone's mentioned it, but you must have seen this play: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb... Here's the rule (7.08):
"Any runner is out when --
(a) (1) He runs more than three feet away from his base path to avoid being tagged .... <A runner's base path is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely> ..." Note that this says nothing about "going on the grass". The base path is determined by the position of the tag attempt, not an imaginary fixed line on the field, and In the umpires' judgment the runner was within the three foot limit. Looking at the replay with that in mind, I think they got it right. So relax, Travis. I found your Boots Randolph link:

| Jul-01-14 | | Jim Bartle: Unit was obvious, Lincecum just threw his second no- hitter last week, and I sort of guessed on Halladay. Two greats, two very goods. |
|
| Jul-01-14 | | Jim Bartle: On the rundown, the guy who missed the tag when he went down on the grass pulled a Brainlauch, arguing the play instead of throwing to third. He probably still had time. |
|
Jul-01-14
 | | Phony Benoni: <JB> Agreed; he probably thought going on the grass was an automatic out. In any event, great scrambling by the runner. |

 | | WannaBe: Porcello had a great game today. CG shutout, 4H, and only 95 pitches!! (When Linceceum got pulled during his almost no-no, he was at 95 after 5 innings)... The bullpen loves ya, baby!! |

 | | WannaBe: Speaking of Timmy (One of the answer to the trivia question), 4 and 1/3 against Cardinals, at home, already at 63 pitches... |

 | | WannaBe: Okay, the answer to my Sunday schedule question...
The Cubs did not play on Sunday, first time MLB scheduled a Sunday off in 80+ years. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/... |
|
Jul-02-14
 | | Phony Benoni: Another oddity about Porcello's shutout; something happened which hadn't occurred since this game, nearly 25 years ago: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... |

 | | WannaBe: Both games have the same exact number in attendance? I'm staring at both box scores side by side, and I can't figure it out. |

 | | WannaBe: On the other hand, we had a triple-play and a double-review on the same pitch/batter/play!!! http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/... |
|
| Jul-02-14 | | Jim Bartle: Winning pitcher had complete game with no walks or strikeouts? But two hit batters. A Stanford pitcher not named Mussina won a game?
The names of the visiting team's first two batters rhyme? Each of the first six hitters got exactly one hit?
Trying to figure out why Reuss was taken out after five batters. |
|
| Jul-02-14 | | Jim Bartle: In the Dodger game the runner was ckearly safe at the plate. |
|
Jul-02-14
 | | Phony Benoni: <JB> No walks or strikeouts. |
|
| Jul-02-14 | | YouRang: <I predict that Verlander will be next on this list...> <Phony Benoni: <YouRang> Don't bet on Verlander winning another Cy Young. Right now, he is possibly the fifth-best starter on the Tigers, and this decline has been I evidence since his Cy Young year.> Okay, I'll take your word for it. I'll revise my prediction: The next guy to join the select group of pitchers with <multiple Cy Young> and <multiple no hitters> will be Clayton Kershaw. |
|
Jul-02-14
 | | Phony Benoni: <YouRang> A much safer statement! |
|
Jul-03-14
 | | Phony Benoni: There are bucket catches, and there are bucket catches: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=11... |

 | | WannaBe: Okay, another one for y'all...
What do these 5 baseball players have in common:
Kirk Gibson http://www.baseball-reference.com/p... John Tudor http://www.baseball-reference.com/p... Eric Chavez http://www.baseball-reference.com/p... Tim Salmon http://www.baseball-reference.com/p... Cesar Tovar http://www.baseball-reference.com/p... |
|
Jul-03-14
 | | Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> We're just a bunch of patzers. How are we supposed to answer these All-Star questions? |
|
Jul-03-14
 | | WannaBe: <Phony Benoni> Correct, those 5 players <NEVER> made it to an All-Star game. |
|
Jul-03-14
 | | Phony Benoni: Gibson's non-appearance is well-known. Tudor surprised me a bit, what with that 1985 year (21-8, 10 shutouts). But he actually started the year 1-7 before winning 20 of his last 21, and was only 10-7 at the break. Chavez and Salmon don't surprise me at all. Maybe good, but nowhere near the best even on their own teams. As for Tovar, which position do you select him for? |
|
Jul-03-14
 | | Phony Benoni: The Tampa Bay announcers tonight seemed to think it interesting that the Rays' lineup, counting the DH as "0", had the position numbers "8675309", and that the lead-off hitter was "Jennings". |
|
Jul-04-14
 | | Phony Benoni: OK, here's a weird one. The umpire says a runner was not tagged. The <hitting> team asks for a review, and gets the call reversed! http://m.mlb.com/video/v34268385/to... |
