Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Sep-20-14  Jim Bartle: Espn guy has made a list of the best seasons by a pitcher in the last fifty years, really wonky.

Pedro Martinez got the best two seasons, followed by Gooden and Koufax. Gibson 1968 came in 7th, Kershaw this year 15th. Clemens 1986 was not on the list.

Also missing entirely were Marichal, McLain, Verlander, and Hershiser 1988.

WannaBe: Jerome Williams became a part of history today, he was the winning pitcher for Phillies vs A's. (He was the starter for Philadelphia)

Well, he also won on July 25, as a member of the Texas Rangers, (starter) and April 26 as a member of the Houston Astros (in relieve, got the win and also blown save)

And of course, mass confusion in the Detroit/Kansas City game, is the play reviewable or not? If not, why was the call reversed???

That may have been the best catch of the day, but it wasn't the best throw:

Sep-21-14  Jim Bartle: <And of course, mass confusion in the Detroit/Kansas City game, is the play reviewable or not? If not, why was the call reversed???>

Really dumb play by KC.

But umpires should be watching for things like players tagging up. The dugouts sure are.

Part of the confusion, in the video I saw, was that the actual appeal to third was not shown at the time, only after the out ruling.

Phony Benoni: Dumb play all around. The Tigers' shortstop, Suarez, is a rookie who has been filling in adequately most of the year but is now beginning to show his lack of experience. If the Tiger's get into the playoffs, you won't see much of him.

The base-running mistake was only noticed by one of the Tigers' September call-ups, Hernan Perez. Kid can't hit for anything, but he certainly earned a few brownie points.

The Tigers appealed, and the third base umpire called the runner was called safe. When Tigers' manager Ausmus asked for a review. The umpire wasn't 100% sure whether the play was reviewable; it was in a gray area. So, he probably did the right thing by consulting the replay officials, who told him the play could not be reviewed and gave no other information.

Meanwhile, the replay had been shown at the stadium, and 40,000 fans groaned. It was that obvious.

The above is from statements made to the press later. Nobody said this part, but I'm sure the umpires had to know what the correct call was. The problem was that they received the information from unauthorized sources.

So I think the long consultation was a matter of finding a means to justify "getting it right". In the end, they resorted to a vague statement about agreeing on the call, which they stuck to when Royals' manager Ned Yost asked specifically which umpire saw the call. After all, on the third base umpire would have had a chance of seeing it, and he had already ruled "safe".

It's really a fascinating case. The umpires "got the call right", but technically they probably used an illegal procedure to do so. Should they have stuck strictly to the manual and gotten the call wrong? That would be tough simply because they would have admitted some measure of incompetence.

So both sides were right. Several players make big mistakes, the umpires get the blame, but all the while the biggest blunder was that of the fans. If they would have just kept their big traps shut...

Sep-21-14  Jim Bartle: Hard to believe a professional umpiring crew didn't check if a runner touched a base. That's elementary.

But at least the proper procedure was followed (appeal, ump's call at third). Not clear at all on the mlb.com video. Ausmus had no reason to argue until after the appeal.

The runner on third had no baseball sense. First thing you do on a caught fly is to go back to your base.

Runner went down the same time as the hit.
