Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Right now I think the Bears might make that trade> However, I have the definite impression that a fairer value for Manziel would be Ryan Leaf.
Dec-15-14  Jim Bartle: Lots of college QBs who couldn't cut it. Anybody remember Rick Mirer, Tim Couch, Akili Smith?

WannaBe: What about that Heisman winner from Houston, can't recall the name right now. Set all kinda NCAA passing records. =((

I hate to say this, but the 3 from 'SC have done maybe F+, Leinart, Bush, and what's his name...

So, how will Mariota do? What does the early-early exit poll say?

I tell ya, good thing it's freezing in Chicago, otherwise TV sets would be raining out of windows.

WannaBe: Andre Ware, that's the kid I was thinkin' about.

That will show ya, thinkin' hurts! Be a lesson for ya kids, don't play chess, it hurts!!!

Dec-15-14  Jim Bartle: Ware and Klingler, record-setting QBs at the University of Houston who crashed and burned in the NFL.

Man, sux getting old, forgetting than you've ever remembered.

Sometimes you grab the brass ring, and sometimes it hits you on the ass.

chancho: Ryan Leaf, some people thought he was going to tear up the NFL, but the only thing he tore up, was that house where he was looking for drugs.

The number 1 draft bust in history according to NFL Top Ten.

David Klingler. He's a bit of a punchline in these parts. I'm in a distinct minority in that I think he was really talented and got stuck on a horrible team, lost all his confidence, and was done.

OhioChessFan: By the way, Klingler didn't win the Heisman. The legendary Ty Detmer did.
Dec-16-14  Jim Bartle: Between 1970 and 2010 I count 19 QBs who won the Heisman. Only six became successful NFL quarterbacks, and that includes Testaverde and Flutie who weren't really stars. Of course the other 13 included a couple who were primarily runners and not equipped for the pro game, and Charlie Ward, who went to the NBA.

Most of the great quarterbacks (Marino, Manning, Elway, Montana, Young, Aikman) didn't win the Heisman.

  chancho: Tony Mandarich.

http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/spo...

Second behind Troy Aikman in the draft of 1989, and ahead of Barry Sanders, and Deion Sanders.

Aikman, Sanders, and Sanders are Hall of Famers, while Mandarich is well, an atomic draft bust.

Dec-16-14  Jim Bartle: <Aikman, Sanders, and Sanders are Hall of Famers, while Mandarich is well, an atomic draft bust.>

Derrick Thomas, too.

Dec-16-14  suenteus po 147: <PhonyBenoni> Hi, Dave. I'm sorry to leave you and the other historians/collectors hanging during the great tournament revival. You guys have done amazing work turning my amateur collections into searchable indexes of historically significant tournaments. And I see also you and a few other notable contributors have done one better and created some thoroughly detailed and researched collections of your own, easily the better of my contributions. It's actually a little overwhelming to see it all and how far it's come. I'm going to be cleaning house in the near future: mostly deleting a lot of false starts and unfinished collections, but there are a couple far enough along hat I should probably just finish them. I will do my best to contribute in the ways that I can, but I ask that you all be patient with me. I haven't done this work in a few years now :)

WannaBe: Did you know there is an inside-two-minutes rule exception on advancing a fumble? (See Green Bay-Buffalo)

http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/p...

No wonder football is so confusing to non-Americans, heck, at times, I am confused!

Soccer, straight forward, same rule for everyone, no NCAA vs NFL rules, or like basketball NCAA/NBA rules vs International FIBA rules...

Phony Benoni: <suenteus po 147> Good to see you again, Peter. Yes, the attitude over at the Biographer's Bistro has changed over the last couple of years. <Chessgames> received a scathing review of the work being done, which was a bit harsh but also largely justified. Several members took it to heart, and as a result our standard of work has improved considerably.

I've rather dropped out of the mainstream work to concentrate on my US Open project. The years are advancing but I'm not, and I'm only up to 1966 with more and more stuff coming in. Just found a site with some new games from 1913. You have no idea how that excites me.
